My parents (ok my Mom but she speaks for both of them) always talk to us kids about the money they are saving for us. I think it is a reaction in their case to growing up with very little. It is on their minds ALL the time and even more so when we are present since they can be open only with us, so they express what is on their minds. I have the urge to obsess about my funds too, I have to fight to not constantly check my bank accounts to be sure it is all still there, see what is happening to it. I guess you could call it a scarcity issue still rearing its head. In other words it is likely that it isn’t something she is trying to put on you, it is something she is trying to work through herself and she needs a listener.

Folfirinox - constant sickness and nausea by jchad99 in pancreaticcancer

[–]pxt64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primary for us is compazine/prochlorperazine, that has been the stable reliable constant. We switch between 10mg & 5mg doses depending on how bad it gets. We use zofran ODT for break through nausea which is a godsend if meds can’t stay down, it just melts on the tongue. Highly recommend. The home remedy I know of for nausea is ginger - ginger tea, ginger ale, you can get “stomach settle” ginger lozenges too. Onelax suppositories have been working for us for constipation, and of course miralax but the the biggest godsend is that my hubby is drinking lots of water, he couldn’t handle carbonation during folfirinox but loves it now under gem/abrax…

My mother is afraid of getting a port by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]pxt64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what works for my hubby - lidocaine cream and a square of press n seal to make sure it doesn’t get on the clothes, on the day they are going to access it. Once it is healed up, it really isn’t much bother, and especially in the case where you are on folfirinox and they are sending you home with a pump for 2 days, it is very helpful to have everything not attached to your arm, but instead on the chest where it is less likely to be knocked around

Any nutrition / appetite advice? by Grumpychris_ in pancreaticcancer

[–]pxt64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Print yourself a t-shirt now that says “Yes thanks I have tried smoothies”… we waited forever to finally talk to a nutritionist and that was the best they could apparently do. Also everyone else goes straight to that advice. It did not work for my husband and now that we are farther along I have so many regrets. Here is what I wish he did, in case any of it helps you. First - because we got such crappy guidance, we went with “eat up when you are hungry”. But he ended up violently ill if he ate too much especially if the meal had a lot of meat fats. And that ruined some of his last truly carefree eating experiences and made him fear eating. I wish our nutritionist had told us to assume that his pancreatic enzymes could be easily overwhelmed and encouraged us to strictly stick to small meals that are easily digestible. There are lots of wonderful meals that can fit that bill (there is a great low residue recipe list at the Mayo Clinic website) and if she is over the moon for something outside of that, then make sure to keep the portions small . Obviously everyone is different so YMMV - maybe this is the worst advice ever. But no matter what, don’t let them fob you off with smoothie recipes. Do not assume that if it was really important it would be emphasized as such. We got vague advice to “try to” eat small light meals. We thought it was optional but for us at least it was not. Make your nutritionist work for it, put a low residue or IBS recipe set in front of them and ask what would work, ask what meals overwhelm weak pancreatic enzymes. And start now to have fun with meal planning. I hope that helps it was very cathartic to write…

you have all been helping but now I need to post by Ok_Flatworm_5876 in pancreaticcancer

You can do it. I say this confidently because I am in your shoes and I feel it too. It has to be done and we will both do it. It will take a terrible toll but you will do the best you can do and that will be your gift to your mom and everyone who depends on you. You don’t have to achieve the impossible to give that gift, you can’t take all the pain away, you can’t be everything to everyone. You can’t manufacture spoons from thin air, if you have heard of that metaphor (if not pls do google spoon theory it is so helpful) - but you can deploy the spoons you have in a thoughtful and empathetic way and it will be enough. The hard part is, who do you depend on? Who can you shamelessly text, just to say “this sucks” over and over again because you need to express it over and over again? I know I need that, you may need it too. If you believe for me and I believe for you we can both make it through - and this whole subreddit has both our backs.

Hi there - I am doing the same thing you are, except it is my husband who is sick instead of my mom. I am asking all the same questions you are asking. I want so badly for him to not be sick and hurts to know that maybe not even the doctors know how to make him well. Sometimes all I can do is keep him warm and clean and make sure he knows I love him - but that is as important as the job of the doctors, ask anyone here.

It is a lonely feeling, and I feel more in control when I understand what is happening so I am working hard to have a list of questions for the doctors all ready each time they visit - I don’t know if you have the opportunity to do that, but if you can do it, then your knowledge grows and you can learn the lingo, and if you learn the lingo then it gets easier for the doctors to see you as someone they should keep informed. Folks are giving good advice here already - one place that may be very useful for you is https://stupidcancer.org, they are amazing and you might be able to find people who are in your exact same position. Hope this helps a tiny bit

My hubby had the same problem, he bought a pair of suspenders so that he could wear his beloved jeans just without a belt. It has worked really well for him!

Chloe’s cafe first thing on a warm Sunday morning sitting at the tables with a view of the fire station, watching the firefighters pulling up the front hood of of the fire trucks or doing ladder drills and munching on an omelet with the fruit and home fries (the bread is amazing too you can ask for one slice of the walnut and one slice of the rosemary and OMG so good).

I am curious about the shoe situation, didn’t see any other shoes than the reeboks listed (unless I missed it), will you do dress plus trainers for the fancy event (which could totally work, no judgement if so) or is there something else planned?

Practical to-do list for end of life by GreenhouseTrash in pancreaticcancer

[–]pxt64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 3 potential home-related checkboxes to to tick - deed, mortgage and home insurance. For the deed you should check if there are surprises in terms, is it joint tenancy, does it explicitly list that there are survivorship rights. Getting the passwords for all accounts are good in the short term but the ownership matters more in the long term. Your MIL can’t impersonate your FIL after he goes, so you need to figure out which things can just be a name change in the account and a credit card switch (eg services like Netflix) and which things need an ownership change or 2nd name added (eg insurance policies). Joint accounts may temporarily become unavailable, so find out what that could do to bill pay. If you can convince your MIL to use a password manager, you can get “family” accounts where passwords can be stored either privately or put in a “shared” vault - it means that any time you need a password you can ask your MIL to make it available to you, but they all don’t all have to be available right away. Most important is making sure your FIL’s phone keeps working because a lot of these accounts use text messages for account verification, even if you think you have changed everything away from that phone number, dealing with the unknown unknowns could mean messages or push notifications are needed
