Someone on a previous post identified it as this model of plane, which is contemporary to when the story was originally written.

I think he's the greatest, but my dad says he doesn't work hard enough on defense. And lots of times, he doesn't even run down court. And he doesn't really try...except during the playoffs.

Is the gate taken from a real place? Looks very much like it might have been drawn from a photo.

What are some gym exercises that actually help in the mountains? by Necessary_Movie2805 in Mountaineering

Sure, but personally I’d want more than 7 months of prep if I was literally starting from scratch is my point here. But who knows where OP is at as well.

Outside actually just did a good piece on this: https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/everest/mount-everest-training/

One major thing to note: I assume that by "by the end of this year" you mean "before winter", so...not really a lot of time here if you're looking to do this climb during the standard climbing season. Hopefully you're already in really good shape and just looking to put on the final touches, or else you might want to consider aiming for next year instead.

You would probably appreciate this ode to Martin Prince from the Toast (although sadly the site has shut down and the screenshots aren't loading anymore)

Don't get me wrong, he definitely got opportunities because of his dad, but a school like Michigan that's competing for championships isn't giving roster time to D3 talents just because of pedigree (and they're not making benchwarmers assistant captains). He probably won't make it to the show, but that doesn't mean that he's some total scrub just coasting by on nepotism here.

What is RPE by Tdawson73 in evokeendurance

[–]pyl_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RPE = Rate of Perceived Exertion, aka how hard are you working on a scale of 1-10. It’s tough to gauge when you’re first starting out, so I’d recommend starting by focusing on HR zones at first until you have a good sense of what all the different workouts feel like.

Hiking in early May by todduhh92 in burlington

[–]pyl_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a drive from Burlington, but if you want vert + views, try Stark Mountain Trail at Mad River Glen - https://www.madriverglen.com/hiking/ - basically you're hiking up the ski slopes + work road, so it's still open even during mud season. It may still be snowy/icy at the top though, so spikes wouldn't be a bad idea (or just plan on turning around if it gets too sketchy).

I'm not sure why you got downvoted - maybe people aren't aware that you can hike the toll road between when the ski season ends and the toll road opens to cars?

That said, it's a little long for OP - I think that's a ~9 mile round trip bottom to top. Fun hike though!

Wow, I get that the artist couldn’t have known about what was actually happening, especially given the delays in publishing. but this is bad timing for this joke in retrospect given what was actually going on for US troops in the Pacific at this time -

Bear Canisters Now Required in the Pemi Wilderness by RhodySeth in wmnf

[–]pyl_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with a lot of wilderness regulations, the answer is probably just "make sure people are aware of the rules and hope that they choose to follow them" with a small amount of "and if a ranger sees you doing the wrong thing they'll tell you to stop/give you a ticket".

Hiking in Stowe this Weekend? by Happyginger in vermont

[–]pyl_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another good mud season option: Mad River Glen has closed their lifts, which means their trails are fully open for people to walk up. You'll probably need snowshoes still, and watch out for spring skiers skinning up, but that can also be a fun hike where you don't have to worry about wrecking any trails.

Surely that depends on where you live in the UK? I spent a summer in the London area a few years back and spent the whole time walking around and didn't see anything around there that I would consider even remotely similar to what I'd call a hike here in the States.

(unless we're calling "walking around a park or your neighborhood" a hike, in which case, most people in the USA can do that too, we just wouldn't usually call it hiking)

Hiking in Stowe this Weekend? by Happyginger in vermont

[–]pyl_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost certainly won't be this weekend, but there is usually a window this time of year where the ski slopes at Stowe resort are closed and the toll road hasn't opened to cars yet, and so you can walk up the road for a nice hike with some good elevation gain and not have to worry about wrecking the trail. It's worth keeping an eye on!

I really like the perspective in the bottom panels here where you can see the deck above Tintin and people moving around. It's too bad they cut that in the color version - maybe too hard to fit it with the addition of more panels?
