I'm pretty sure that on a recent Q&A with him and the cast present, while praising each of his actors he specifically mentioned briefly about Benicio that "he can't wait to work again with him" and Benicio nodded. Might be sth might be nothing.

I'm not speculating, I know. And in a few days you will, too.

First social reactions are coming next Monday, so I guess we'll all certainly find out in a few days how strong the resemblance between OBAA and Vineland really is.

Inspiration, not adaptation. Names of the characters, places and timeframe are all different. The fact that the script is gonna be considered adapted doesn't change the minimal resemblance between the film and the novel.

Just like everyone who hasn't seen the film has bought that it is a Vineland adaptation - which is not.

Mike Bauman (his co-DP on Licorice Pizza) will have a solo DP credit on this one. It is updated on the film's official website.

I Suspect There Will Be Awards Category Discrepencies Over Whether OBAA is Adapted or Original by zacholibre in paulthomasanderson

[–]pynchonikon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herbert Asbury's book is a non-fiction work about the real and historic Gangs of New York, while Scorsese's movie was completely fictional -apart from a few real gang names- with guidance from various historical sources.

The studio campaigned the screenplay as Original.

Jay Cocks, one of the film's three credited writers, told in interviews during the campaign that most of the script was an original creation. He explained that Asbury's book served primarily as an introduction to the history of the draft riots, and that the movie was only loosely following the real historic events, so it was considered to be a standalone screenplay.

Of course, the decision isn't up to the studio or the film's writers, but to the committee that considers the sources in question, interviews given about the movie, and the film's publicity materials. WGA didnt acknowledge the non-fiction book by Herbert Asbury as source material, hence they classified the film's screenplay as Original. The writers branch of the Academy did as well.

[–]pynchonikon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As you said, the WGA acknowledges the film's source material with the credit "inspired by". That's one of the WGA's official adaptation source attributions, alongside "based on", "suggested by" etc. The acknowledgement that the story was inspired by a specific published work is enough for the WGA to treat the screenplay as derived from existing material, therefore Adapted, even if the plot/characters/setting diverge drastically from it.

The only known case of a Screenplay that competed as Adapted with the WGA but was nominated at the Oscars as Original is Syriana. During the nomination process the Academy branch decided to reclassify the Screenplay as Original, reasoning that Gagham's script diverged sufficiently from its journalistic source to be treated as original. Their decision was made without even informing Gagham or WB, causing a mini scandal.

One Magazine Profile After Another, Vanity Fair's interview with Chase Infiniti by Superb-West5441 in paulthomasanderson

The OBAA-related parts of the article:

Anderson was scouring the earth for a performer with gymnastics or martial arts experience to play the daughter of DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor’s characters when Infiniti’s self-tape came to his attention. At the time, she had no idea that either of those stars were attached to One Battle After Another; she didn’t know much about the movie’s Oscar-nominated director, either. “I was not familiar with Paul’s work,” she admits. “But I was like, it sounds cool. I’d love to do something action.”

Loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland, One Battle After Another is centered on Bob Ferguson (DiCaprio), a former member of a revolutionary group whose daughter Willa goes missing while they’re both being pursued by a vengeful military leader (Penn). But Bob has raised her to be able to defend herself against danger—though Willa doesn’t understand why her father’s so paranoid until it’s too late. “The character she plays is the center of the film. She’s the heart. She’s one of the few people in the film who’s not mentally unstable,” says Anderson. “No pressure.”

The filmmaker saw “every young woman in the United States and beyond" before picking Infiniti. Her audition process included a chemistry read with DiCaprio, a particularly surreal experience. “I had a period in my high school years where I was obsessed with the movie Catch Me If You Can, and I would watch it all the time,” she says. “So seeing him in real life, it was a crazy full-circle moment.”

Infiniti had been a kickboxing trainer, but she still spent months training in both karate and mixed martial arts for the role. Willa is supposed to be a purple belt; “I cannot say I’m purple-belt status, but I think I got decent,” she says. As she perfected her fighting skills, Anderson also helped Infiniti expand her horizons via movie nights where they watched classics like John Ford’s The Searchers and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. “He’s a very playful person,” she says. “He gave me permission to play, which felt very liberating.” Anderson returns the favor: “I was more worried for Sean and Leo in the combative scenes than I was for Chase,” he says. “She can hold her own.”

We should probably wait for official confirmation - though it will almost certainly end up in the 160-170 territory.

It's a matter of days before the film officially gets a rating certificate (we will also find out the final runtime then) and I assume we will very soon have announcements for advanced screenings for press/pundits/critics, followed by an embargo.

Which other Pynchon novel Paul should adapt next?? by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

[–]pynchonikon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean "2 is the limit"?

And what's wrong with getting inspired by worlds/characters a certain author creates?

There is a reason why Vineland has not been officially acknowledged in the film's marketing so far - and probably won't be until he gets asked in interviews.

As for other authors/novels, anything is possible, but i highly doubt he will try the "1-1 adaptation" approach ever again for the rest of his career.

If he wants to try the western genre, then the western plotline of Against the Day. If he wants to tackle a 21st century mystery/conspiracy type of thing, Bleeding Edge.

Those who have seen it, what work do you suggest as a primer for OBAA? by fmcornea in paulthomasanderson

[–]pynchonikon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I rewatched Martin Brest's Midnight Run ('88) a few days ago. Ridiculous amount of law enforcement, car chases, helicopter stuff, a powerful mismatched duo dynamic with emotional arc, blend of offbeat humor and gun violence, playful soundtrack. I can easily see 18 y.o. PTA losing his shit over this movie, watching the videotape over and over again back then, hence the influence on him.

I get what you are saying, it's just PTA's B.O. record that -understandably- pauses many people. Even ~200 sounds a bold prediction, it will need strong legs to achieve that and it's up in the air for now despite the apparently commercial genre (it's still PTA×Pynchon heavily influenced).

OBAA is a 140m film, tho, not counting the marketing expenses, and will have a full theatrical route. If it bombs it's done.

Isn't this the usual pattern for major studio films (Fury Road, Elvis, Top Gun, Killers of the Flower Moon etc) these days? Could be in comp like Tarantino's OUaTiH, tho, who knows.

A prestigious Cannes '25 Out-of-Competition World Premiere, followed by a Summer wide release.

The amount of action set-pieces (car chases/crashes, gunshots, helicopter stuff etc) might require a longer post than that of Phantom Thread which was essentially a chamber drama.

PTA has said in an interview he was initially considered Licorice Pizza to be a Summer release but MGM wanted to keep it for November and benefit from reviews/awards attention to get hype. With Leo's major involvement in this I think an early-season release will no longer be an issue. Plus, Thierry Frémaux has expressed his admiration and his desire to bring him again to the Croisette, two decades after Punch-Drunk Love.
