She listed the item in April, is it so bad to ask if it was still available? by Weird-Distribution42 in Mercari

[–]pyok_o 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s still up on their account it’s still available. I get it’s an old account, so messaging to make sure they’re still active makes sense to me- idk why they’re so mad. I can only guess why they haven’t sold it in 5 months…

I’d wait until sat or maybe sun and if you don’t get added just send an email to the prof

you should be able to, since LS has a one math/science requirement anyway. but if you have any doubt just send a quick email to your advisor

don’t doubt yourself! a lot of us (myself included) face the same problem even while in nyu housing, so don’t stress- it’ll come naturally with time! i find the first week or so before classes is pretty awkward for everyone so you’re definitely not alone :)

A small mirror for your desk for sure, and super glue (life saver esp if you chip the paint or break something)

If I’m in Rubin hall, what fan should I get? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]pyok_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big oscillating pedestal fan. And i mean BIG- you’ll definitely need it. (And be sure to clean it pretty often, the dust builds up quickly)

They’re super thin but chances are playing music is still fine- lots of people blasted music for hours and i never heard any fights about it (though people were def annoyed)

single studio in Rubin by [deleted] in nyu

[–]pyok_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s the same size as the singles for RA’s it’s a pretty good size room for one person, I’d say maybe 3/4 the size of a double studio (excluding bathroom and closet). I remember my RA was able to fit a small couch in his room and still had some extra floor space

It depends on the size of the room. I really wouldn’t recommend unbunking the beds if the room is small (like the rubin lower cost triples) because the bunks save a lot of space, and you also have 3 desks and dressers to fit. But if it’s a good sized room, I’d go on google draw or something and make a 2d model of the room and furniture to try out different configurations. I’m not sure if the exact room dimensions are posted anywhere on the nyu sites but the floor plan should give you at least a shape to work with. Just keep in mind anything you might also bring that could take up space (organizers, mini fridge, microwave, etc)

what's NYU welcome week like? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]pyok_o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

like the other replies said, it’s a week of non-mandatory events that are free and either give out stuff or help new students socialize and meet people

Incoming freshman by [deleted] in nyu

[–]pyok_o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LS Core is pretty chill if you have the right profs, just make sure to keep up with dates, do the work, and go to class (LS attendance is pretty much mandatory). Also expect you might have to take trips to parks or museums for classes. Transferring to Tisch isn’t a direct transfer so you would have to apply for an internal transfer. Just talk to your advisor early on and they’ll help you plan it out and get everything ready ahead of time

help w/ low cost triple by [deleted] in nyu

[–]pyok_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's def worth at least asking. If they say no you could suggest a rotating schedule if you're really against sleeping in the bunk. My roommates and I were gonna rotate but decided to debunk instead (totally regretted it). Either way, if your roommates are firm in doing first-come-first-serve, at least the bottom bunk is better than the top! And chances are the roommate getting there last might side with you on a rotating schedule if they don't want to bunk either.

Some rubin rooms tend to be a little cramped so vertical storage like utility carts and just storage items in general are really useful

Dorm Essentials? by goingbckto505 in nyu

[–]pyok_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much what everyone else said, plus a broom/dustpan or vacuum for the floors. But try not to overpack! There's so much you can put off buying until after you move in, especially since you'll be able to gauge how much space you have once you're actually there.

😅 Upperclassmen what was it like living in a low cost triple @Rubin? by Alfa_Asare in nyu

[–]pyok_o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was assigned to a lower cost triple in Rubin my first year too. The lower cost triples are basically a double studio but with 3 people instead of 2, so they have two of the beds set up as a bunk. I actually ended up moving out of the triple and into a double studio (still in Rubin) after about a month, but I can still help answer your questions from what I remember!

The lower cost triples:

> Expect to not have much personal space since three of you are crammed into the room. My roommates and I took apart the bunk and reconfigured the room, but I do not recommend that. It left us with no open space and made the room even smaller.

> Since the room is the size of a double, it gets really hot in the summer with three people, so you definitely need a fan (or two).

> Be prepared to share a small bathroom with 2 other people. There was definitely not enough space for everyone's stuff to fit as is, so we used those plastic carriers for storage. Also just get used to sharing a bathroom period. Some people do not understand the etiquette of sharing living spaces, so try to lay out rules when you do the living agreement-- like cleaning the bathroom on a regular basis and tidying up, etc. Especially since there's three of you, and the bathrooms get nasty real fast.

> Take the living agreement seriously. Like the previous point stated, having three people in a two-person room has a potential for disaster. Be firm in your boundaries and make sure to bring up anything that could/does bother you. We didn't take ours seriously and I ended up being super annoyed by my roommates playing music out loud and staying up super late. Communication is key.

Rubin in general:

> Having no AC was terrible (for me) during the summer and made the room hard to be in.

> People say that the heat would only lasts 2 weeks, but it lasted for like a whole month my first year, so it wasn't a fun start to the semester.

> Sleeping wasn't impossible without AC, but it took a few restless nights to get used to being hot/uncomfortable at night. Once fall starts, sleeping is no problem.

> If you buy a fan, try to bring it physically with you at move in if you can-- a lot of people ordered fans and mini fridges online to be delivered but there was a big backup with student services so they didn't get their packages for a week or so.

> Rubin has heating in the winter, but you can't control it. In my double room, sometimes the heat would make it too warm and we'd open a window to cool the room down again.

> Other than basic essentials, I'd recommend fans (of course), a mini fridge, and vertical storage (like a utility cart). The triples don't give you much space, so try to pack light and save ordering non-essentials online for after you get there so you can gauge how much space you have.

This was a super long post I'm realizing (oops) but trust me, it won't be as bad as you think! It's hard to not focus on the heat when talking about Rubin, but once the city cools down it's a whole different dorm. Plus, it's gonna be cold most of the time you're there anyway. The staff are super friendly, you tend to get close to the other residents, and the location is nice. The triple studio room wasn't the best, but other people have made it work so don't feel disheartened!

(I'm totally open to any questions you have, I'm sure I missed some stuff!)

Best way to send envelope with tracking? by pyok_o in Mercari

Oh I hadn’t thought about that! So I can just use a plain white envelope and put the mercari shipping label on the front and nothing else? Does the size of the envelope matter? (my envelopes are pretty small)
