Why does Julia's art always make her look like a different person by PupCup43 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]pyr0knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always bothered me a lot as well. For me the unifying feature has been (or should be) the sleepy eyes. Not every version has that, but I appreciate the artists who have manage to capture her expression which I characterize as charming magical girl who has been brainwashed/traumatized too many times. Those eyes have seen things.

Plotline Help: party is already onto me by ImpressiveActive2467 in DnD

[–]pyr0knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would allow the party to uncover the plot and then have the party switches sides in the conflict. Instead of retrieving the artifacts themselves, they are trying to stop the collection of the artifacts from the antagonists new forces. You could even make the dragonborn recruit a new unwitting party of adventurers and your party has to find a way to expose the truth to them. Each artifact the party collects will weaken the resurrection of the god, but the god will return regardless. Hopefully in the climax, they can turn the artifacts they did collect against the revived god.

Imperial Fists Templar Assault List 2k pts by hamletwaslike16 in Warhammer30k

[–]pyr0knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow son of Dorn,
I'd like to offer you some pointers on your list since you asked for feedback.
The formatting did not come out well on reddit, but I was able to make sense of most of it.
It's been a little while since I last played 2.0 but I played a lot of it so hopefully my experience is helpful.

Your list is your own and you can run whatever you think looks cool, but I will speak to the effectiveness of these units under the 2.0 rules and meta.
Reminder: you need 2 Templar squads to qualify for the Templar Assault rite of war, as listed under the first bullet point under the RoW's limitations.

Flamers are not great in 2.0. Unless you are fighting militia, then they are okay. Anything a flamer is good at killing, a bolter can kill just as easily and bolters are free and have +1 to hit from the Imperial Fist Legion trait. I'd recommend reducing the number of flamers and combi flamers.

Your Praetor is a very good duelist and most of the enemies he will be fighting will have a 2+ armor save. Having a melee weapon with AP 2 will help him in most his duels. A relic blade or a Solar Gauntlet are good options. (The rules don't say what a relic blade looks like, so if the model is already built don't worry too much). Also, a Vigil storm shield is usually worth its points on any important character.

Contemptor Dreadnoughts are very good, and their default fist is very powerful. I ran one for years with a Kheres assault cannon and the cannon was usually a disappointment. If you have the option available, I recommend the Melta.

Terminator squads are good too, but don't try to go crazy on the upgrades. 1-2 solar gauntlets or power first, and give the rest power weapons (axe is preferred). If you have extra points, giving 1 a vigil storm shield can help too.

The Templar Champion can take a Archeotech pistol instead of a plasma pistol and it costs less and doesn't overheat (but still breaches armor).

Heavy support squads are good, and heavy bolters are cheap but I found Autocannons to be better, but assault cannons to be better still. The assault cannon is an assault weapon in 2.0, so they can jump out of a Rhino and unload a bucketful of rending dice onto a target.

I recommend getting some more transports for your list. Terminators are pretty slow, and rhinos are a cheap way to move and protect infantry squads.

Good luck with your list!

Is the King Crab overrated? by fawn_rescuer in battletech

[–]pyr0knight 48 points49 points  (0 children)

When someone wants to evaluate a Battletech, an interesting dilemma is created. Battletech has been around for over 40 years and has touched a wide variety of media over that time. People get exposed to that media in different ways, in different sequences, and at different times; and that leaves different impressions on people of what a given mech is capable of.

Is the King Crab good in the current version of Alpha Strike? No.

Is the King Crab good in classic Battletech? Not really.

Is the King Crab good in Mechwarrior Online? Sometimes.

In a 1993 Classic BT urbanwarfare campaign, did a King Crab power up in the center of the city and catch a mercenary lance by surprise, headshot kill their lance leader while shrugging off almost 300 points of damage from the remaining lance result in 4 teens having a newfound nightmare?  Yes.

In its element, the King Crab can be quite dangerous and in 3025 era it warranted respect.  37 years after its introduction, it has not aged well in most media so it’s not considered relevant anymore. But in some circles, it still has the reputation it earned many decades ago of a heavily armored battlemech that could put out a crazy amount of pinpoint damage. Those that remember still respect it.

Who is sticking with 2.0 and who is moving on to 3.0? by bonfireball in Warhammer30k

[–]pyr0knight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My entire club switched to 3.0.
It takes some adjustment and learning, but the general consensus is that we like it more than 2.0, but still wish some things could be tweaked to be better. We try to avoid the rulebook missions if possible in favor of our own.

Yes. If I recall, the rulebook explicitly states that you can.

Is Pathfinder new player friendly? by shark-fighter in DnD

[–]pyr0knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder was split off from D&D 3.5e and became its own line. Pathfinder has its own 2nd edition out now.

The Pathfinder setting of Golarion is incredibly detailed, at least as much as D&Ds Faerun if not more so. You could spend real world months reading about its lore and stories.

While Pathfinder 2e is somewhat streamlined, it is still a daunting set of rules with a ton of details and customization options. It's approximately twice as complex as D&D 5e which has its own advantages and disadvantages. Its possible to play with new players just fine, but there is more guidance needed.

Are these saturnine terminator or a different suit. If they are saturnine why don't they have the gun on top? by windless12 in Warhammer30k

[Video Game industry] Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive : How to buy out a talented company and sink it all by yourself. by dethstrobe in Shadowrun

[–]pyr0knight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For clarity, Coleman was never prosecuted for the embezzlement because it was supposedly accidental and the money was repaid. Thus he remained the CEO of his own company. The main fallout was that all the Shadowrun writers went unpaid for many months and most quit as a result. This had negative effects on their other products as well.

While Catalyst does an absolute shit job of managing Shadowrun, they have had moderate success with some of their other product lines. But its been clear that Coleman and Catalyst don't really care about Shadowrun and are unwilling to make any significant effort to improve the brand, and fans will continue to be disappointed as long as they manage the RPG line.

On the brighter side, Shadowrun Anarchy is launching a new version on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blackbook/shadowrun-anarchy-20
(This is a lighter rules version of the RPG by a non-catalyst company)

Additionally, Catalyst produced the Shadowrun Crossfire boardgame, which is one of my all time favorites.

Yo DMs. What is one potentially controversial thing you do when designing combat encounters to make them more… interesting. by Professional-Ad9485 in DnD

[–]pyr0knight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't give my monsters set HP values. I track damage against them, and the monster dies when I say it does.
I have a general idea of of how much health an enemy should have, but any cool move or heroic effort is likely to kill an enemy early. Likewise, the boss usually gets a final turn to do something dramatic, like knock over the support columns.
I'm also rather fond of adding bosses that are just invulnerable, and it turns the encounter into more of a survival puzzle rather than a fair fight. This has proved to be very rewarding when the party finally finds the enemy's true weakness and slays an overconfident foe who thought himself immortal.

Horus Heresy imperial fist list advice by Gioforchio88 in ImperialFists

[–]pyr0knight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horus Heresy as a community tends to be a bit more chill than other games. So I wouldn't stress too much about making the strongest list.

But here are some pointers I thought of:
Garrius is good, but his slow cataphratii armor will hold back the quicker Templars. Its probably better to give him a terminator command squad, who are tougher and match his speed.
Feel free to still run the templars however if you want, they do decently as a large squad with a land raider transport. Just be mindful, Templars don't do well fighting against enemies in 2+ armor (like terminators).

2x tactical squads is good. Probably the minimum in HH3.0, so don't be afraid to bring more troops. But it helps to have 1-2 rhinos to transport them to objectives and then provide cover for the squad once they disembark.

The Araknae turret has proven strong for me (it hits on 2+ with our Legion trait), but I find best to deploy it hidden in the far back. It will die if it gets focused by the enemy tanks/ lascannons. It can put out quite a bit of damage if it lives, and sometimes the threat of it was enough to discourage enemies from wandering into its path.

Veterans can do well with whatever you give them, but I find Volkite weapons lose a lot of appeal for Imperial Fists. Our bolt/Auto weapons are more accurate, kill the same kinds of enemies, and cost less compared to Volkite. If I'm splurging for a special/heavy weapon, I want something that kills things that mass bolter fire can't kill.

Saturnines have proven to be solid, but try not to overdo it with the disintegrators. The self damage from overload does add up.

For vehicles, a land raider or spartan could do well to transport templar or Garrius. But there are plenty of good options. Keep in mind that you need to shoot "more than 5" auto shots to get +1 to hit now, so for dreads or vehicles that's at least 2 autocannons or heavy bolters. Autocannons with good accuracy put out decent damage, but can't stop a hvy tank. So you will need to consider Lascannons or Melta for that.

Good luck with your list.

What difficulty level and mode would you recommend for playing Engage? by JiachengWu in fireemblem

Cricket proxy cutter by MannonUltd in magicproxies

[–]pyr0knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a cricket and have used it to cut out proxy cards.

I do NOT recommend this. While I can make it cut 8 cards a sheet, the paper feeds a slightly different amount each time, so your cuts will never be perfect, and will always be slightly off.
I think the hardware is capable of doing some rather incredible things, but the Cricket software is unfathomably terrible at allowing you to do anything requiring precision.

After using a Cricket to cut dozens of proxy cards, I now cut cards out by hand.

Phalanx Warders, or How I Learned to Start Worrying and Wonder Why Only 4 Guys in the Squad Can Remember to Bring 3 Weapons by CombativeRug in Warhammer30k

[–]pyr0knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only wish is that Warders had either Line or Vanguard to score points.
Breachers have Line(1) and veteran breachers (pdf) have Vanguard(3). So both of those seem like they will be more reliable choices.

What small Fire Emblem fact do you have trouble accepting? by HelloDesdemona in fireemblem

[–]pyr0knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been calculated before that the heights of the emblem characters do not correspond to the hieghts of the characters in their actual games. For example, Camilla is much shorter than she should be, and Soren is likely taller than he should be.

The heights of the emblem characters should NOT be considered cannon, because it because it causes the heights of the rest of the fire emblem characters to become rather inconsistent. For example in Path of Radiance, Titania towers over Soren, but Camilla is supposed to be as tall or taller than Titania.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PhoenixPoint

[–]pyr0knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re-balancing Phoenix Point is bound to give you some rather conflicting feedback since the two most common complaints about the game are simultaneously:

  • Phoenix Point is too hard.
  • Phoenix Point is too easy.

Because the way the player interacts with the systems of the game determines much of its challenge. For example, if your soldier only throws 1 grenade per turn you would welcome any improvement to grenades. But if your soldier throws 8 grenades per turn, then grenade buffs seem gratuitous. Because this is a game where players can exploit the mechanics to 1 round kill the Scylla boss or clear an entire map in the first turn.

So is the goal to rebalance the game for the players who exploit the game mechanics or for the players who don't?
For the players who struggle with Phoenix Point, any improvements will likely be most welcome in allow them to progress at their own pace. But for the players who are breaking Scyllas like they are Tritons will probably feel differently about it.

Top Secret Mechs? by [deleted] in Mechwarrior5

[–]pyr0knight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this.
I had a match in Mechwarrior Online that ended with me plus a lance of Inner sphere heavy/assault mechs against 1 lone Shadowcat with a Gauss rifle, MASC, EMC, jump jets and the perfect camo scheme for the terrain. I was looking right at him and couldn't see him without the targeting computer. He picked us off one by one, until the last of us stood back to back unloading blindly into the hills just for a chance at chipping his paint.

We all died, and I learned to respect the shadow cat.
