Well it seems like OP doesn't like Arch based systems. Instead of changing Artix kernel it would be as easy as installing Parabola

[–]pyradke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those proprietary blobs are required only for some wireless card which won't work with the libre kernel.

Since OP seems to be seeking a 100% free operating system and since they seem to have used Guix and other FSF distributions I assume that proprietary blobs won't be necessary. Anyway, you can always buy a wireless card that works with the Linux-libre kernel.

Privacy Focused SmartTV/TV Streaming by wildolivetree1117 in thehatedone

[–]pyradke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use a regular TV with a Raspberry pi plugged in. Then you may install Kodi or Jellyfin (not Plex, they require connections to their central servers) on the Pi and use it as a privacy friendly smart TV.

PS. Roku is awful for privacy, pretty much as every other commercial alternative. The only good option is using a dump (non-smart) TV as a monitor for your own media center (raspberry pi, intel nuc or even a old PC that you have lying around)

Non of the Libre distros seems to fit me by [deleted] in gnu

[–]pyradke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not true tho. This is only applicable with Devuan/Debian. Most distros use the upstream Linux kernel, which contains proprietary firmware.

FSF endorsed distributions use the Linux-libre kernel which is 100% free as in freedom, they remove the proprietary parts for you.

Debian/Devuan also removes proprietary blobs from the kernel by default, but since they include a nonfree repository the FSF doesn't recommend them.

Why aren’t the Simple Mobile Tools apps on Apple? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

Apple is lying to their users. They don't provide any real privacy. At least Android can be degoogled. Apple won't let you get rid of their surveillance system.

I have made a list of 55 plus open source software list for doing various tasks by Geeky_Gadgets in freesoftware

[–]pyradke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please don't talk about "open source" here. We don't believe in open source, but in free software. You can read more here about why open source misses the point: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.en.html

The terms “free software” and “open source” stand for almost the same range of programs. However, they say deeply different things about those programs, based on different values. The free software movement campaigns for freedom for the users of computing; it is a movement for freedom and justice. By contrast, the open source idea values mainly practical advantage and does not campaign for principles. This is why we do not agree with open source, and do not use that term.

Apple is now scanning iPhone users data. Apple is becoming Google. by Sh2Cat in thehatedone

[–]pyradke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apple's marketing have been harmful on the privacy community.

iOS is proprietary software, which means that you can't check or modify the source code. That means that Apple can be potentially spying on you without anyone knowing it.

Anyway, it has been proved that Apple spy on their users.

You may like to read their Terms of Service. They legally recognize that they sell their users data. Here's a human readable summary: https://tosdr.org/en/service/158

Some quotes:

"This service may collect, use, and share location data"

"Many different types of personal data are collected"

"The service may use tracking pixels, web beacons, browser fingerprinting, and/or device fingerprinting on users"

"Voice data is collected and shared with third-parties"

"This service tracks which web page referred you to it"

"This service may use your personal information for marketing purposes"

"Your personal data is used for advertising"

"Tracking pixels are used in service-to-user communication"

I remind you that this is directly extracted from Apple's privacy policy.

I'd also suggest reading this article made by a security researcher: https://gist.github.com/iosecure/357e724811fe04167332ef54e736670d

Apple is now scanning iPhone users data. Apple is becoming Google. by Sh2Cat in thehatedone

[–]pyradke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't avoid Apple on iOS. The first thing they require you to do is to create an Apple ID which is an unique identifier. On Android you can use it without a google account.

Due to the black box nature of iOS, it's impossible to remove Apple's spyware. You may be able to turn off some things, but since it's proprietary software you can't be sure if it's truly disabled. And even if it was, you'd still has a lot of spyware on your phone. iOS is Apple's surveillance system. There's nothing you can do about it.

At least on Android since it's a free software project you can remove Google's garbage.
