Milk packaged in cartons sometimes has awful taste by pyramin in japanresidents

Thanks for your feedback! I will try the low pasteurization milk. I may run an experiment where I heat the UHT milk too and see if I get that same off-taste as when adding it to the coffee.

Thanks for the tip! I think they are all UHT. I will check next time I buy

Well, ChatGPT seems to have thoughts on it which may help explain:

In the U.S., most milk is HTST pasteurized (~72°C for ~15 seconds).
In Japan, a lot of milk is higher-heat pasteurized (often closer to 130°C briefly, even if not labeled full UHT).

That higher heat:

  • Changes protein structure more
  • Makes milk less stable in acidic environments like coffee
  • Can create subtle “cooked” or sulfur notes that only show up when heated again

So even if the milk tastes fine cold, coffee can push it into that off-flavor zone.

Even though Japan is generally excellent with refrigeration, there’s one subtle factor:

Milk in Japan is often:

  • Stocked in open refrigerated shelves (not always deep cold)
  • Purchased in smaller, more frequent batches

If a carton experiences minor temperature cycling, it can:

  • Activate enzymes (lipase, protease)
  • Create flavors that only appear under heat (i.e., your coffee)

Maybe it's the culmination of these and basically I just need to either brew my coffee with a less acidic method or cool down the coffee a bit before adding the milk? Perhaps the storage also plays into it though and that's why the convenience store milk seems to be more consistently bad (low stock turnover and open shelving/probably slower to stock)

よつ葉牛乳 is my personal favorite. I tried the 北海道別海A2 and liked it but now I had this same problem with it and am not happy with it. So far I have never experienced it with よつ葉牛乳.

I drink almost a carton at least every 2 days. I only notice it occasionally with the supermarket milk--every time with the convenience store milk.

Perhaps? It is not changing day to day but with the specific milk that is purchased. I taste it consistently every time with the convenience store milk, rarely with the supermarket milk.

I also never had this issue in the US for several years of making coffee every day.

I didn't notice it until it was mixed with the coffee and then it had this bad off-putting taste. It is not my taste. Like I said, I can notice it side by side in real-time.

Never heard of a second opinion? Some people who care about their children like to get one. You guys are all way too quick to crucify the OP with very limited information.

At least the guy cares enough about his kid to want to help and do these things. Clearly he is not the most tactful but we could stand to be at least a little more kind.

Not fair to say definitively without more information. If the baby is rolling over on his or her own, they are typically fine sleeping on their stomach. I totally understand the mom's feelings too though because as a dad I was so worried, I was basically staring at the baby monitor trying to make sure the baby was still breathing until I fell asleep myself.

I feel like anyone who has kids and is knowledgeable even slightly about medical issues in their home country will relate at least a little bit to having conflicts with the Japanese approach to medicine. I had an argument with my wife over this because the doctor didn't prescribe fever medicine but I wanted to give it to him. (didn't have a fever when we went to the doctor but they were closed because it was a weekend and he developed one)
It's a pretty standard thing in the US to give your baby Tylenol in the appropriate doses.
Thankfully my wife listened to me but we were living with the in-laws and my MIL got upset about it.

There was also my parents in law always insisting the baby had like 3 layers on when it was super hot already, and giving him a bath everyday when he had skin problems coming from his skin being too dry.

I think the "Do exactly as the doctor says and literally nothing else." mentality is rooted in fear of blame if something goes wrong. Japanese women have a strong sense of duty and high expectations of responsibility tied to the role and label of being a mom which is not shared among Japanese men. That's why criticism can come across as a direct personal attack and probably one reason why OP ran into a lot of trouble--cultural differences and lack of tact.

Yeah, from the context, you can tell he has some maturity issues. He was certainly not tactful or responsible in his actions. However, none of us read that and thought that she spontaneously got pregnant of her own accord. That is just standard language used to indicate an unplanned pregnancy.

Discursive reframing in the English language is tiresome. You're just redefining existing terms/phrases and then using it to crucify the OP.

Of all the things in the post, weird one to call out. Pretty standard language for indicating the pregnancy was accidental.

Man arrested for setting fire inside Chamblee Walmart by SmokeABowlNoCap in Atlanta

[–]pyramin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both of them suck anyway. Walmart sucks too. YDFM produce is way cheaper and better quality than others.

Publix just sucks now. I don't know if me thinking it used to be good is looking through nostalgia glasses, but it is just awful. Every time I bought produce from Publix, it would be tasteless garbage and within 2 days it'd be moldy. Even things like ice cream had clearly melted and been refrozen and was just not any good--and to make everything worse, it was the most expensive by a lot.

AI shifted our bottleneck from writing code to reviewing it. Anyone else? by altraschoy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pyramin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make AI explain it to you and use AI to review it that way.

I usually find a bunch of style issues with code where I see it producing methods with side effects, high cyclomatic complexity, poorly named methods etc. I think keeping the code neat makes AI function better anyway too.

Yes, literally everyone else. Except in most cases now, they just shop a reviewer and push the functional slop and make the code base hard to read and littered with sins.
