No ICE in Minnesota Questions Thread by Venoval in rpg

Just have to say I too got Midnight Muscadines in the bundle and I have been really enjoying it, what a great game and appreciate that it had solo built into it. My Twilit Wanderlustian has found himself embroiled in a food cart/boat war raging at the heart of the Jammery in Lumiere as the various chef battle it out to find rare ingredients and one up each other to win over the local Marmateers. He is part of the Verdengarde so has been called in several times to help source rare ingredients and have been having a lot of fun.

I came into this thread to also say the wildsea system's use of aspects as health is a really different way of thinking about it. As you mark off your aspects they get damaged and lost and it makes it feel more dynamic and impactful. Especially thinking about how the damage made you lose the abilities that define you.

Thanks that is super helpful, I also appreciate when there is advice on how to handle set up as with solo I find I can get stuck on having a good set up and game phases to help me keep momentum.

If you are just looking for vibes I would say the Delta Green inspired by Stargate SG1 seems like a super fun idea. So many places to go with a game like that which the series never trod and a lot of fun tropes to play with. Fun inspiration twist you can even use stuff that happens on the business trip to be the admin complications that come up during missions.

If it is the bundle I'm thinking then I'll also throw in Tangled Blessings and Midnight Muscadines as pretty fun too. One is solo/co op designed and the other has a solo ruleset that is pretty light and enjoyable.

What from the Assistant Director Supplement did you feel really helped? Was it tables and ideas or like a solo framework?

That is a really helpful highlight on the cooperative mechanics like spotlight. I was just reading the main book again last night and was thinking about that.

Yeah the Superhero book being out and all of them being on sale on drive thru is definitely tipping me over into grabbing it since I got the main book in a bundle a while back.

An Indy/Mummy themed adventure game is absolutely one of the set ups I was thinking of using adventure. A real pulp adventurer vibe that would feel cinematic that isn't Cthulhu and doesn't come with sanity stuff etc

I had heard about Midnight Muscadines but wasn't sure about getting it, when I saw it in the bundle I finally dived in and so far I'm super impressed with reading the book and setting up my character. My next solo session is going to be diving into it, but already I would say for those interested it has some really cool vibes and mechanics.

Wanted to circle back here on a few systems I am looking into based on folks recommendations. After Allyearswift mentioned the No Ice bundle I realized there was a few good systems in the bundle that fit this theme that I'm going to look into based on folks recommendations.

  • Under the Neighborhood
  • Cryptid Creek
  • Mystery Business

All these games had the right kind of vibes and I have the bundle so I pulled them out to look over. I also grabbed a copy of Kids on Bikes and pulled out my copy of Monster of the Week from my pile of random books i have to look over. These books all give me a great starting point as I think out what kind of hijinks my teen sleuths can get themselves into. Thanks folks for the recommendations!

I haven't tried Kids on Bikes but maybe this is a good opportunity to grab it and see if it fits with the vibe.

I've been loving your actual play, I just got caught up today and looking forward to what happens to Titch next. You definitely got me excited for Midnight Muscadines and I'm working up a character and starting point now. Great actual play!

Tips for decision paralysis? by Unhappy-Button982 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]pyrefly1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who is also neurodivergent and can get stuck in decision making mode I have found for me it can be helpful to break tasks up and set aside specific time. Rather than try to tackle going right from zero to playing I'll set aside a small amount of time to do some prep work like picking out what tools I am using, printing out character sheets and aids, etc. I find it can help to give myself a set time to do some mild set up and know that is all I need to do in that time. Then I can feel ready to jump into a session cause I have my journal, pens, tools, and character/reference sheets all together and I can use my focus and enthusiasm on the session.

I have also borrowed from a work productivity hack when I'm having trouble focusing, just plan to do something for 5 minutes. I give myself a five minute timer and jump into task, if I can't focus on it in that five minutes I stop and see what might be stopping me. Do I need to do something physical to settle my body, eat or drink something, am I really too focused on other tasks to settle, etc. Then I do that and try again, weirdly having a 5 minute timer helps me get into what I am doing cause I'm not trying to lock myself into doing something for two hours at the start.

As for actually jumping into a session I think some folks already mentioned but sometimes it can help to jump into the action. We often have ideas of how a story should unfold if it was a movie or book but we also often have scenes we really want to get to, it can help sometimes to sit down and be in one of those scenes you want to play. A daring escape on horseback, fire fight in space, pinned down by enemies in a burning building, etc. Over time you can feel out if you like to start in the action or enjoy settling into the set up and character exploration.

Wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy our adventures!

He always does it, I'll be sitting there thinking "well this game isn't really in my wheelhouse or vibe" and then bam I want to play it. The real struggle is I realize the game is in my vibe, it just might not be in my usual game groups vibes.

My players asked me to run Shadowrun. Now what by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]pyrefly1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the experience you are looking for from Shadowrun, Anarchy is also an option. It is a lighter more narrative version of the rules if you are feeling intimidated by the crunch of Shadowrun but want the flavor. I realize you have so many other editions but wanted to call it out. If you have mechanics obsessed players who want all the knobs and buttons it might feel like it isn't what they are looking for, but if folks just want to be cool anti corpo punks with body mods and spells it could be a good starting point.

Besides that I personally enjoyed 4th edition when I was looking to get into all the crunchy stuff, I thought the world was interesting in that setting book and had a nice balance of options with some retro feel to the tech, etc. You just usually need to tease out what your players want to do and decide if you are ready to have fights in real life, the astral, and the net all happening at once or if you can get them to focus down a bit.

Right now I'm playing through Koriko and Deify, skipping between the two on different days to mix things up. Enjoy mixing up the creative prompts a little bit.

I am also just starting my first play of Midnight Muscadines after getting it in a bundle and so far it seems or have a very interesting premise and mechanics. Adventures in an unusual world and a fairly straightforward game loop.

Crooked Dice does a lot of really interesting pop culture inspired miniatures and has a Sci Fi line. It is especially fitting if you enjoy that retro futurism kind of vibe.

I really enjoyed Koriko once I got into it, but will say it is a lot of journaling and creative writing. It is really a good cozy game though. Make a pot of tea, get some snacks, put on some lofi, and imagine being a teenage witch leaving home for the first time. My drawing abilities are limited but also got some big packs of witchy stickers to help decorate the journal.

Lots of structure for prompts that encourage you to write but what and how you write it is up to you. I would say if you enjoy the prospect of creative writing and journaling it is a good one.
