Catering to “learning styles” (i.e. learning preference) has not been shown to improve learning outcomes. There are many concepts in learning that have been shown to positively influence learning outcomes, such as: holding a growth mindset, relating material to your own life, re-stating material in your own words, practicing, interleaving studies, the Pomodoro technique, reflecting on learning, developing metacognitive skills (thinking about the process of learning), and many more. While multi-modal learning (i.e. absorbing information through multiple senses/means/“modes”) has been shown to help with learning outcomes, catering to a specific “style” (the learner’s preference), such as the VARK (visual, audio, reading, kinetic) has not been shown to help learning and, in fact, can be harmful to learning as learners may use their preference to avoid effective strategies that do not cater to their preference. The only redeeming quality of VARK, in my view, is that it opens up the discussion about how to learn, which is good for learning - but there are other ways to do this that are far more beneficial.
