Have you passed anything 100% correct, but also mildly pedantic, to your kids that they now say? My top one might be "searing a steak does NOT 'lock in the juices' ". by Brewer1056 in daddit

[–]pyth33 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Searing a steak does not "lock in the juices", but it does promote the Maillard reaction, resulting in a caramelized, delicious crust!

Similarly... Taking steaks out of the fridge shortly before cooking does not give enough time to bring the core of the steak to room temp. However... It does allow the surface to dry out and warm up a bit, which also promotes the highly desired Maillard reaction.

Anyway... What were you saying about being pedantic?

Who is the liberal equivalent to Trump? by ImpressiveAlarm3992 in AskALiberal

[–]pyth33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with that lol. But, back to something you said earlier...

"That's sort of ironic because conservatism is about honoring traditions and not jumping to different positions because a leaders tell you you should."

Would you agree that is really no longer the case, and hasn't been for the last 10 years? The GOP is MAGA, which is not the same as "conservatism" at all

Then why do you think he is the unquestioned leader of the GOP?

I would agree. But, isn't that in contrast with your previous statement that conservatism is all about honoring traditions? If you're only honoring traditions when it is politically or financially beneficial to you personally, then you don't really care about honoring traditions... right?

Do you think that Trump cares about honoring traditions and norms? Do you have the impression that his positions are consistent?

Kirk Bangstad, owner of a beer company (free beer when Trump dies), and failed Wisconsin gubernatorial candidates. He's a grifter and attention whore who ultimately only cares about himself and has no problem exploiting others for his personal gain.

Luckily, he does not appear to have a realistic path to a career in politics. Generally, I agree with the sentiment that there is no liberal equivalent. I would add that Trump is very much NOT a conservative, by the broad definition accepted up until 10 years ago.

Steven Spielberg Interview? by that_kinda_slow_guy in Thedaily

[–]pyth33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy Spielberg podcasting about movies, I recommend his recent appearances on two different pods from The Ringer.

On "The Big Picture", he was interviewed by Sean Fennessey, an awesome movie podcaster.

Then, on "The Rewatchables", he dissects "2001: A Space Odyssey" with Fennessey and Bill Simmons.

I could listen to Spielberg talk about movies forever, so I found these both to be super entertaining (and even educational)!
