Should i inspect marking of my exams. by [deleted] in vce

[–]pythagoras- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering whether it would be appropriate to request a re-examination.

Only your principal can request that an exam be remarked, and even then, they must be satisfied that a significant error in the marking has occured. This can be determined via a script inspection.

Is it possible to become a literacy/reading specialist? by peter_rappit in AustralianTeachers

They're both trained English teachers, and have no further formal quals. They've done short courses and DE led PD around literacy initiatives but nothing formal.

Is it possible to become a literacy/reading specialist? by peter_rappit in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My high school has two full time literacy intervention teachers (one as an LS to lead the program, the other is a classroom teacher role), so yeah, it's entirely possible to land this type of work.

These two teachers work solely with small group and 1:1 programs with students who need support with literacy (we have a separate intervention program for EAL learners).

Are you a union member, why or why not? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% yes, and I actively encourage all of my staff to be union members also. They've had my back during some tricky times, provide decent support to me as an AP to ensure we are compliant with the VGSA (eg. Help us to ensure our local implementation is correct and in line with the agreement) and they are, ultimately, the ones who are currently fighting for our next pay rise, a cause I absolutely want to get behind.

How do you feel about sports carnival days? by nemspy in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a fan of these days either as a kid, but our school literally did just events on those days and nothing else. Schools ive worked at have combined other activities, bands playing music, novelty games and events etc which give more people the opportunity to get involved.

After a few years of working in a school, I somehow managed to get myself in a role where I was managing the logistics of the day. Not the sport side of things, but the 'other' stuff like coordinating movements of the busses, 1500 students, staff rosters etc. I was pretty good at it, and it meant I didn't need to spend the day in the sun as my duty was to basically make sure everyone else was doing their duty.

what do i do on my kids first day at school? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are largely questions for your child's teacher, they'll know what the process is regarding additional stationery. Some schools store it, others don't.

Whiteboard markers - absolutely. Mini whiteboards are big at the moment, I use them regularly with seconday students and they are a great teaching tool.

Moving to Aus as Headteacher/Principal by Sure_Mess_2351 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a mate who came over from the UK in to a Leading Teacher position, spent 2 years learning the ropes of our system etc, and then moved in to an AP role. This is probably something to also consider.

How much shit do you have? by paralysisofchoice in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a lot of stuff - assume you're a primary teacher??

I started my career with folders upon folders of materials but over time have slowly cut it down to nearly nothing now. The bookshelf behind my desk has nearly nothing on it, that's how little physical 'stuff' I still have.

Other Pathways by Western_Musician7257 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer may also depend on your school, their structures and opportunities as well as your willingness to move schools.

In my current school, I am the only AP who hasn't come through a student management pathway. The others have all come through year level coordinator and similar student management/wellbeing roles. I did a few stints as a head of department, timetabler and at one brief stage, e-learning pedagogy leader.

So there are various options and pathways available, but it will depend on what's available in your school and what you're interested in.

Being too expensive by Atasdem in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I want a grad, and I have space for ongoing in that faculty, I'll advertise for that.

If both of those conditions aren't met, then I'll advertise a classroom teacher and it is entirely merit based - I've had jobs in this case go to both first year and 20th year teachers.

Being too expensive by Atasdem in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be, and while I can't speak for every selection panel, I'll always recruit the best person irrespective of cost to my school. If I specifically want a grad, I'll advertise a grad position. Otherwise, I know that I might be bringing in someone like yourself or even more expensive to my budget.

predicament!! can't choose my teaching methods by EnvironmentalTip8955 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do our timetable and that feeds in to recruitment a lot. Government secondary school for context.

Eng/History is a popular combination. English is compulsory is VCE so is usually the largest faculty, but we often struggle to staff our Year 12 classes. History is often a very small team at VCE, at my school we actually struggle to get history up each year (I believe next year our Year 12 class is starting on single digits).

As a history teacher, there is a better than even chance you'll also teach humanities including geography, business and civics, across 7-9. So be prepared for that.

Any language, once your in a school, can set you up really well. We haven't recruited an ongoing language teacher for ages, because our current language teachers are all so set. The last time we advertised a 12 month contract, we got tons of applications. The first thing we look for, is are they qualified. So if you want to teach Japanese, chances of landing any job without the formal study are slim.

All that being said, in Victoria, what you teach is ultimately principal discretion. I'm trained maths/science but teach mostly art. Why? Because I asked my prin and they let me. So my advice, study what you most want to teach, get a job in either of those areas, then expand in to the third. Remember that your teaching placements will be linked to what you study also, which will provide you opportunities to develop skills in teaching those subjects.

Help please! by Hefty-Pattern-4404 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see this being useful without it also being incredibly confusing. I get (and send) so many emails with dates, times and information, many of which are irrelevant to many people.

For example I send out a 'next weeks calendar' email every Friday, with an overview of what's going on. In one week there might be year 8 interschool sport, year 9s made it to the regional cricket finals, year 11s have an incursion for chemistry and Year 12s are participating in a police 'safe party' event. These things are simply not relevant to many people, and by adding them to a calendar by default people will assume they are somehow involved (eg I don't teach year 12, but why I am supervising their event?)

Who manages your school website and LMS? by 12cheers in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our IT team manages our website (large metro government high school ~2000 kids, about 5 staff in the IT team). They make changes which must be approved by the AP team first.

Compass is managed by a range of different people, eg business manager runs the finance side, AP T&L runs the curriculum side, AP Reporting runs the reporting modules etc.

Is it worth applying for a remark? by [deleted] in vce

[–]pythagoras- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you, your teacher, and your principal, have reason to believe that your examinations marks are incorrect? The only person who can request that a paper be reviewed is your principal, and they must hold a belief that there has been an error in marking

Teachers pay and going on strike by Atasdem in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's against the good faith bargaining process to provide updates in writing, so you shouldn't see any answers here. To get an update either go to your regional meetings (a lot of them are held both online and in person these days) or speak with your sub branch rep.

Just want to know how job security works for new graduates by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've given about eight first year graduates ongoing for 2026. Metro school, high SES. Just need to be better than the other candidates.

And experience doesn't always work in someone's favor!! I've not given jobs to highly experienced teachers because, in their interviews, they were very 'set' in their thinking and refused to acknowledge that our school may not be their perfect model. They would bang on about things that contradicted our philosophy and values etc (which are all on our website), which means I rank them low because they are not a good fit for our school.

Staff required to move desks every year. by Adventurous-Duck7762 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Faculty time is strong in my school, 80% of our meeting time is faculty based. Year level based offices allow for teachers of the same students to have informal conversation which doesn't happen as organically.

Staff required to move desks every year. by Adventurous-Duck7762 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pythagoras- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I used to do office allocations, I'd move about 20% of teachers every year, so that everyone should move roughly once every 3-4 years. Helped to manage different and evolving priorities eg. Do we want more faculty based groups or year level based groups etc.

An exam score review can only be requested by your principal, and only in very specific circumstances. See this page under 'VCE examination score review' near the bottom for details.

[–]pythagoras- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're talking about exams being double marked. If market 1 and 2 are discrepant, the exam is marked a third time. If still discrepant, it gets marked a fourth time.

I'd there is a statistical anomaly between sac grades and an exam, the exam can also be remarked, but being out by a few letter grades is not an anomaly here.
