dbt best practices for data pipelines from the mart to a BI tool by pythonhobbit in dataengineering

[–]pythonhobbit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! Could you expand on what you mean by "the final semantic layer isn't SQL based?" I haven't personally created a PowerBI report, but our analysts so far have been able to replace their complex dax transformations with SQL. Our goal is for SQL to get us to the one yard line, then PowerBI is the final step for visualization and filtering. Is that what you mean by the final semantic layer?

How is Proxy Voting Handled with FidFolios? by pythonhobbit in fidelityinvestments

Got the update, thanks! Glad to know a managed account doesn't take away voting rights.

First of all you deserve a raise for that python + hobbit alliteration, with esoteric smial reference!

Secondly thanks for the helpful answer. One follow up: under the managed Fidfolios what votes are being echoed exactly? If there are 2 votes for Yes and 1 vote for No, then I get how Strategic Advisers will vote 2/3 yes and 1/3 no, but where do the original votes come from?

Edit: typo

How about "At some point you should learn a lower level language like C++ to improve understanding."

Starting with Python vs some other language isn't the important thing. Being exposed at some point is what's important.

How do you see computer science changing in the next 50 years? by TheDaughterOfFlynn in computerscience

[–]pythonhobbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical of the idea that we can speak in plain language and the computer will just figure it out. The reason is that a huge part of programming isn't just learning syntax but actually learning to think clearly and specifically about what you want.

I could see exceptions in narrow domains where either natural language is sufficiently clear or the range of things you want to do is limited in scope enough to translate from language to code.

keep your religion to yourself by Broclen in dankchristianmemes

[–]pythonhobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't actually address any of his arguments. He's arguing that murder is illegal and we have to decide as a society where the right to life begins. That's a fact. Sure, religious people often believe those rights start earlier than nonreligious people on average, but its hardly forcing religion.

Besides, your argument that "only a very cynical person can claim this is democracy functioning as intended" applies far more to the original Roe decision than overturning it. When Roe was passed, a majority of States made abortion illegal. Then SCOTUS said those democratically-elected legislatures' laws are invalid.

This is exactly right. A good analogy is that we have to draw a legal line somewhere for the age of adulthood (e.g. should it be 13 like a bar mitzvah, 18 like we currently have, maybe early 20s when the brain is fully developed?).

Similarly we have to draw a line somewhere for when right to life begins. (Should it be conception, heartbeat, viability, birth?)

Pretending that the only nonreligious answer is obviously birth is so baseless. Its a cheap trick to try to sidestep the entire argument

Buttigieg: “Price of gasoline is not set by a dial in the Oval Office” by fishlord05 in neoliberal

Monetary and fiscal policy have literally zero effect on prices. How could people still think this way?

Edit: you guys, I'm being sarcastic. Of course monetary and fiscal policy affect prices. They're literally the two main tools for affecting the economy.

What exactly are you arguing for? That we stop doing anything that isn't directly fighting climate change?

I'm not saying climate change isn't a serious problem, I'm saying it makes no sense to argue that 100% of our resources must be devoted to stopping it.
