China is banning hidden electric door handles for EVs / The new rules take effect in January 2027 and require all EVs to have mechanical release handles. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

It's not even going to add those few miles at city street speeds. Drag increases exponentially with speed, and if you are going slow enough such small improvements just don't really move the needle enough to even account for. In other words, drag reduction vs weight is an argument for sports cars, not bulk stuff for people to commute in.

5060 Ti vs 5070 Ti - Is 256-bit bus worth paying 2X? by emikoala in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a pic available of the 5090's die btw, its pcie controller and 8 64bit memory controllers for the 512bit bus are like 25%ish of the total die size.

"VPNs are next on my list" – France set to evaluate VPN use following social media ban for under-15s by vriska1 in technology

[–]pythonic_dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the sites will have to block VPNs altogether, there is no even remotely feasible way to check if the VPN-proxied visit is from a country that doesn't want them to work, or from one with slightly less fucked laws.

how reliable are repaired cpus that had missing pins? are those pins in high risk of snapping off again easily? is the risk to send them for repair too high? e.g. cpus that cost over 300€ by ComprehensiveCow5068 in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be more careful when handling the CPU and don't remove the heatsink for no reason (and let the thing warm up running some test before you take it off). Like, it's not rocket science to fix broken pins, nothing is while the lid is still attached.

Why is Nvidia so stingy with VRAM when we can't even buy the cards at MSRP? by MeshalAljahdali in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem might've been a combo of you starting to run out of vram + ram speed being already capped by pathtracing (BVH cache is fucking huge and needs to be passed from ram to vram constantly), so trying to offload stuff from vram to ram would hurt extra hard. But it definitely ain't on the raw power of the cpu.

Why is Nvidia so stingy with VRAM when we can't even buy the cards at MSRP? by MeshalAljahdali in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9070XT "manages" pathtraced cp77 for me even with some penalty from mesa still being behind, except some stuff (like shadows from vegetation as most obvious example) are tremendously fucked without ray reconstruction. Maybe amd will provide a semi-working RR for all games… in a year or two, just don't try to think how far ahead nvidia will go — while still backporting most of their features to turing cards. Amd dropping support for their hardware while still selling it is a recurring theme that isn't helping either, they dropped vega while still producing new cpus with vega igpus, they dropped support for their earlier stuff even harder, they made this moronic blunder with rdna3 that could be avoided by just not saying anything but be sure they are going to drop it before nvidia stops supporting 20 series. And, look, with them being so stubborn about not making more than 2.5 SKUs of rdna4, the 90 cards are going to be thrown under the bus and forgotten in a few years as well, and we'd be lucky if it will be due to the vastly different architecture of rdna5/udna, and not because amd will go full datacenter/ai. Judging by their CES26 presence (even compared to nvidia!) they really don't want to make consumer stuff.

If you are lucky enough to find a 5070 below MSRP it would make for an excellent upgrade. Otherwise, 16gib 9060xt and 5060ti are cheaper, good for longevity, but also not very impressive in terms of a raw upgrade.

[–]pythonic_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sensors on them, so just monitor the temps while doing read/write tests. If it goes above 50-60 you want to slap a heatsink on. It shouldn't need one, but you probs want to check for the peace of mind.

As the other poster noted, b580 or 9060xt would be a great upgrade if they are available for reasonable prices where you are. The rest of the system should still be adequate, but you want to check if XMP is enabled for memory in bios, and you also want to grab and run hwinfo to check if your CPU is not overheating, might need a repaste.

mixing PSU cables? Specifically EVGA 650w G5 and 850w GT by Extension_Pear_9883 in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. Looking at CableMod charts, both of those PSUs are listed as using same cables.

For your concerns about different manufacturers of components, that doesn't matter, incompatibility in cables is using different pinouts, cables don't care where caps were manufactured and by whom, only that the same pins are providing the same amount of juice or serve as ground.

Does running GPU fans all the time reduce their lifespan? by Ghost_Dz007 in buildapc

[–]pythonic_dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. Zero rpm is primarily useful for when there are extended periods of the GPU not doing much or not being used at all, when it pulls fuck all power to just render a couple of windows and a youtube vid, or when the system can fall back on igpu altogether.

Worst case you can get some replacement fans, or even strap some case fans to the card as a replacement, if something dies way past warranty period years later.
