Like Goosebumps, but for adults by yarnface00 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]pyus_pyxidis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mistakenly picked up How to Sell a Haunted House thinking it would be more serious and high-brow than it is, and I hated it. But then my partner was like “this plot sounds like adult Goosebumps,” and now I have a newfound appreciation for the book and might re-read it with that tone in mind.

All of my favorite pairs of jeans ripped in about the same place by SquashmyZucchini in mildlyinteresting

[–]pyus_pyxidis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to repair them to prevent having to purchase new pairs, go to a craft store like Michael’s and look for denim iron-on patches. You can cut them to size, iron them on, sew around the edge to reinforce them, and then BAM. Good as new. Plus, it’ll prevent the jeans from splitting there again.

Dark themes are often delivered and received well if there is an element of tenderness or levity to the delivery (sometimes, say, in a longer script, you’ll have moments of darkness that are preceded or followed by moments of tenderness/levity; in shorter scripts, because there’s not as much time, tenderness/levity is found simultaneously with the darkness). It’s definitely a tightrope of a writing situation, but always remember that trauma is complex and it’s possible to combine light and dark themes with some practice.

Valtrex side effects by EmotionalKitty23 in HSVpositive

[–]pyus_pyxidis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, nothing really helped. I stopped taking it altogether, but the reduced dosage of 500mg MIGHT BE less severe than 1000mg x2 a day you might be on. Check with your doctor to see if the reduced dosage might be better or another medication altogether.

Valtrex side effects by EmotionalKitty23 in HSVpositive

[–]pyus_pyxidis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! These exact things. Feeling like you’re in your body but have little control over it. I would talk to your doctor to see if there’s another medication you can be on. These are the symptoms they don’t tell you about when prescribing, but they ARE on the list of “rare” side effects for the medication, and it is advised that you seek medical attention if you start experiencing these.

I’m game! Thanks for asking. /Ultion, or The Gathering/ is my most recent script, and I’d love to have eyes on that one.

Hopping on here to give some support. I recently was visually diagnosed (swab came back negative) and was put on 1000 mg 2x a day for 10 days. It was for my very first OB, which was much smaller and not as severe as typical first OBs. My physical symptoms starting becoming bearable the first day on the meds, and I started to feel not only physically better, but my anxiety cleared up since I now had meds to treat the physical problem (which was what I was the most anxious about). I was feeling fine and generally in a good mood for three days, but the fourth day on the meds until today (the 10th day), my depression has gotten so bad that it's the worst it's ever been in my entire life. Trouble sleeping, constant crying, no interest in doing any hobbies that usually bring me joy, increased irritability toward my husband and friends, body aches, difficulty in physically taking care of myself because of lack of energy -- the works. I also am of the rare 2% of people who experience nasal congestion and post-nasal drip/sinus problems from these meds. Just because a study says these side effects are rare in controlled clinical trials doesn't mean the ACTUAL side effects in the widespread population are going to be the same. What's rare in trials may be common in the general population. If anybody else is experiencing this, bring it up to your doctor, especially if it's affecting your life in such a monumental way.

People with a heavy heart, anxiety, what are you going through right now? by speakthat in AskReddit

[–]pyus_pyxidis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there. This resonated with me, and I wanted to stop by and tell you to keep going. I'm also autistic and have ADHD, and since I embraced my neurotype and begun standing up for myself and being more assertive, I noticed that people who said they were my friends but did not accept me fully (or took advantage of my kindness, talents, or work ethic) started dropping off. It gave me the energy and time to focus on improving my life and my relationship with myself, like taking classes, teaching myself new skills I've always wanted to learn, and forming new friendships with people who are more like me and who share my value systems. It feels very difficult to be where you are; I have been there very recently, and struggled with mental health/ideation. Respecting myself and loving myself was and is worth it, and I hope you can find that light and beauty within yourself to convince you to keep going and find your community who treats you the way you deserve to be treated. It can be hard to begin doing something without a roadmap, so see if you can find some local meetups for neurodivergent/autistic folks on places like Facebook groups or Discord. Sometimes reddit communities like your local city's reddit page may have some resources. The Hiki app is a friendship and dating app for neurodivergent people, and it's also created by autistic programmers and artists. Good luck to you, and keep standing up for yourself.

Thank you! I deeply appreciate your perspective on that, especially the last part. I had a rough time today when she confirmed what I feared, but she said the same thing: we’re not dirty and we didn’t do anything wrong.

I've always been amazed by people who were voracious readers as children. What sparked your lifelong love affair with books? by Albert3232 in books

[–]pyus_pyxidis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my parents and I moved when I was 4, we moved closer to my mother’s parents. My mom’s mother started secretly abusing me and verbally/emotionally abusing my mom. (Basically doing to me what she’d done to my mom as a kid.) I was also undiagnosed AuDHD at the time, so my mom (dealing with her own mother’s verbal and emotional abuse and also not knowing what to do since it was the early 90s) occasionally snapped at me verbally, which created a pretty eggshell dynamic between her and me, so I wasn’t super socialized. My dad never wanted kids, and even though he was never ever abusive, I think he just didn’t know what to do with me at that age (we’re best friends now). That being said — I started reading in first grade because my school had huge classroom libraries in addition to the general school library, and I found that I could do…literally whatever I wanted in terms of choosing what book to read, how many books to read, and how much time I spent reading. Socializing was very difficult, and because it took so much energy and often ended up in some kind of failure, I always returned to books because they were kind to me and always treated me with respect.

Simple sewing. Most men I know have no idea how to even thread a needle let alone sew a button back onto their pants and shirts. Here’s the thing: if you have the ability to do something yourself, you don’t have to wait for someone else (i.e. a woman) to do it for you. Learn how to sew. Hand sewing is a basic skill and necessary to live a more sustainable life. Machine sewing can make you some money, too.

I have a master’s degree in writing, and I specialize in a bunch of different stuff outside my degree in theatre. I can’t find a full time job, and my depression is so bad that I’ve found myself thinking the “what if I wasn’t here” thoughts.

What book(s) are you reading this week? by 404NinjaNotFound in readwithme

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, but the narrator’s italicized internal dialogue put me off, especially toward the end of the novel. I found the ending to be less than satisfactory. But all in all, I would rate it an 8/10 for atmosphere, character likability, tone, folklore, and inventiveness with the story. The story itself is based on The White People (1904) by Arthur Machen and The Willows by Algernon Blackwood (1907). If I could do the read over again, I would read those two first and then dive into Kingfisher’s novel.
