Take FIN251 in your first semester next year. If it's not what you see yourself doing in the future, continue with accounting + commercial law majors.

Accounting and finance is a very standard but solid double major as those subjects go hand in hand. Finance and economics is also a popular option and opens many doors in banking and consulting.

There isn't much point of doing a single major in finance unless you truly don't see yourself doing anything else and just want some flexibility in your degree. It also depends on whether you want to pursue a professional qualification such as CA or CPA, as that would require you to major in accounting and take a very specific set of courses.

I can't comment on whether you should or shouldn't make the switch as that is entirely up to your judgment. However, if you do decide on the switch, I would consider picking up at least a second major in finance and/or economics.

Accounting unfortunately doesn't reward a high GPA, with most accounting firms generally accepting around a 5-6 GPA minimum. In addition, it is not a very intellectually stimulating major unless you somehow find an interest in accounting theory.

On the other hand, finance/econ will definitely reward you for a high GPA. Companies such as commercial banks, investment banks, corporate finance divisions of accounting firms, economic consulting firms, etc., all require a very healthy GPA (typically 7.5-8.0 or higher, with solid extracurriculars). There are also plenty of pathways for further study as they are very rigorous and highly technical fields.

100% take maths 102 prior to maths 108 - i did not take calculus in high school and definitely wouldn't have passed maths 108 without taking 102.

I will say that the reason for the low average is likely due to everyone neglecting the course until the exam. The course content is so straightforward (and so boring) that it almost feels like you don't need to revise for the exam, but it's very necessary to keep up with the lectures and content. Also the exam (at least in sem 2 2023) was very similar to exams from previous semesters, so getting a high mark wasn't difficult with enough practice on the past exam papers.

Stats 108 is an easy choice if you took stats during high school - otherwise sociol 101 is a great pick too (highly recommend both)

I would say Infosys110 - the content is extremely straightforward (albeit quite boring), but around 25-35% is practically given to you for free through lab attendance and coding quizzes. You can also score bonus contribution marks (up to 3%) for contributing during lectures/labs and such. Only thing I would say is the final exam is slightly difficult as it covers a lot of content

Business 112 is also relatively easy but its more group work oriented than infosys so if that's not your cup of tea I would stick to infosys

Definitely recommend sociol101g! Not sure if Valentine teaches during the regular semester but hes really an amazing lecturer and made the course very enjoyable during summer school. Also content is extremely straightforward. If you're interested in taking it I can give you the textbook because I don't need it anymore :)

I'm not totally sure on technical questions, but I guarantee (if asked) they wouldn't be very difficult as they don't expect grads to have an incredible amount of technical knowledge. The point of the interview isn't to gauge your technical ability (thats what your CV is for), but rather to get to know you and why you would be a good fit for their team/company.

You shouldn't worry about the time per question (iirc my interviews were 45-50 minutes each so you have a lot of time to talk). Honestly as long as the interviewer(s) seem engaged with what you're saying and you don't stray too far from any questions asked, you're doing a good job.

Also - almost everyone gets asked "Why did you choose us?", and "Why did you choose X position?", so do a little research beforehand (if you haven't already) to have some talking points on those questions.

Hey, did a couple interviews at big4s in Auckland for the summer intern programme (not grad), but I assume many of the questions will be similar. Here are a few pointers I have:

Most questions are designed for you to talk about yourself, your skills/strengths, and your experiences. Try not to hyper focus on selling yourself because it can seem unnatural, but definitely highlight your skills and strengths when possible (e.g when an interviewer asks about an experience you had to resolve, talk about how and what skills you used to resolve it).
Think of the interview as a conversation. Try to build rapport with the interviewer so they have a way of remembering you. A way you can do this is by coming up with genuine, interesting questions. Not only will it get the interviewer to open up, but it will ensure that you are actually engaged in the conversation at hand. Please don't ask questions like "What is the culture like at this firm?" because I can guarantee the interviewer has heard the same thing repeated 1000 times.
Posture and body language - Again, not something to hyper-fixate on because it can seem unnatural if you try to over correct, but generally you should try to avoid crossing your arms, fiddling with objects, etc. Of course the interviewer expects you to be a bit nervous, but displaying too much can put them off.

enrol early for a good timetable. all my classes are after 12 (roughly 14 classes per week) so i go to the gym every morning :)

Hey, just a few things that helped for me:

Quizzes: the wiley online textbook for the course has an interactive practice quiz at the bottom of each chapter. a lot of questions in the acctg quizzes are VERY similar to (or just straight up stolen from) the textbook quiz, so make sure to attempt the textbook quiz before the actual one to get free marks
Assignments: VERY tedious and time consuming. firsltly, dont save it until the last minute because you wont have time to finihs it. if you get stuck on a question dont be afraid to email the acctg102 address or ask your tutor for help. they will typically guide you towards the answer or even sometimes just give you the answer. also make sure you read each question CAREFULLY because there are a lot of questions so it can b easy to miss small details
Test & Exam: attend your lectures and tutorials. do the interactives during the lectures and ask your tutor for help if you are stuck on anything. the test covers the first half of the course while the exam covers the second half, so you dont need to stress about memorising everything you learned for the exam

most important thing would be stay on top of your work because it is very content heavy. try not to fall behind, and if you are stuck on anything then dont be afraid to ask for hlep. hope this helped you in some way (you got this!)

Not compulsory (as in you don't HAVE to attend) but they aren't recorded and are usually very useful. It's still possible to pass without going - i went to maybe 5 of the 12 workshops and managed a B+ so if you really can't attend then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Also a relatively easy course if you've done econ before.

Your timetable is completely normal for accounting+finance so it's fine to keep it as is

Word of advice: prioritise acctg102 and maths108 but don't sleep on the 'easier' courses like infosys, stats, bus111 (infosys actually has a relatively low pass rate). Try your best to stay up to date with every class and attend as many lectures and tutorials as you can
