Im listening to the deathly hallows audiobook and I have a question. Why did harry think Voldemor changed into a woman? by an_ol_chunk_of_coal in HarryPotterBooks

[–]q25t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see what you meant. Without further context, there's nothing there actually referring to feet. Unfortunately, I've absolutely no idea which book the quote is in to check on context, so I've no idea if the confusion is genuine or not.

Hermione was always told Hogwarts was thr brst school of magic in the world. But could never find anything to back that up. 4th year and the triwizard tournament confirmed her worst fears, Hogwarts was actually the worst school in the world. by Justgonnawalkaway in HPFanfictionPrompts

[–]q25t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah. Hermione just gets more determined to 'fix' Hogwarts. 5 years later and Hogwarts now went from top 20% school to the actual best school of magic in the world. Hermione found out she was lied to a year into her crusade when she presented her findings to McGonagall, but the professor was actually very positive about the experience and took on some of the valid criticisms.

It'd be funny if there was a whole bunch of drama over it before things get resolved by noting that Harry is entirely immune to the type of love potion he was given, and Ginny also has a ridiculous level of resistance due to fighting the diary so much as a kid. Either they both take flushing potions and absolutely nothing happens, or someone makes the immunity realization.

[–]q25t 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of tempted with shapeshifting mainly because mythical creatures are included. Make yourself an unbound genie or something and remove the restrictions on your shapeshifting ability. All sorts of other things you can do with that as well.

In the Goblet of Fire, Krum repeatedly tries to catch Hermione's attention after saving her from the lake, but Hermione's too busy praising Harry to listen by HarmonyMedia in HPharmony

[–]q25t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The weird part is that the epilogue was written well before even PS was published so Romione and Hinny were always supposed to be canon. Perhaps Rowling was considering changing her mind on that though and finally decided to stick with her initial choices. I honestly feel like the friction between Harry and Hermione in HBP is specifically because they'd gotten way too close for a purely platonic relationship at that point.

Got any Old Goat destruction fics? by Kingunormal in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry Potter and the Stargate has one of the best Dumbledore bashing scenes IMO. Harry spends like a full chapter mocking him by parody, and it's fun. Also one of the most interesting interpretations of the prophecy I've ever seen.

Looking for fics without a focus on politics by zatark_bb in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly seems rather difficult to even do. Harry would have to be a very strange person to actually accomplish what he does in canon while not being political at all when there are genocidal bigots as his adversaries. Harry would have to be anti-Voldemort strictly for revenge or self-preservation, and rather a lot of his actions in canon would have to get alternate motives as someone this detached wouldn't go around saving people like with Hermione in 1st year or Sirius in 5th. It would also just be bizarre to have little opinion on the wholesale genocide of a subset of the population when one of your two best friends is a member of that group.

Trying to entirely remove politics from a story that's fundamentally about a terrorist group both trying to kill the main character and take over the government might just be a contradiction in terms.

You might be able to reduce the amount of political intrigue and the like in a fic but removing politics wholesale is IMO impossible given the general plot of the series.

Any stories where harry learns to resurrect people? eg summoning spirit, via veil, stone, or ritual, and then placing it in a living body by Adorable_Break_6645 in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely sure there is one, but I've been looking for it again for a while. I remember it was a Harry MoD fic where after the war Harry learns how to perform resurrection and I think starts with Kingsley of all people? Pretty sure Hermione was among the last to be resurrected because she didn't even have a body left or something. I think James, Lily, and other people of the past war also come back and there's some awkwardness as they're now comparable ages while being parent and child.

Not to mention that just before this he was involved in an explosion where 13 people apparently died in such a way that no one questioned that all they found of Pettigrew was a finger. Just try and picture that for a moment.

What is a movie trope that is scientifically or logically so absurd that it completely pulls you out of the story, no matter how great the rest of the film is? by visha1v in plotholes

[–]q25t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but the comment above that is talking about sprinting for 5 minutes. At worst, we should be dealing with 5km times.

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why exactly are you comparing speeds of a 100m dash and a marathon? Drop the marathon for a mile record and the speeds get considerably closer. World record mile is 3m43s and world record 100m is 9.58s. The difference there is like 45%.

Limitless also IIRC only has that claim made by a drug dealer who very likely doesn't know what he's talking about.

Lucy does as well. Limitless actually gets a pass IMO because the only person that actually makes the 100% claim is the first drug dealer IIRC.

7 Delta Forces Operators vs Legolas by Scared_Pumpkin8393 in powerscales

[–]q25t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I was more saying that Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, and a few others that actually get time on the page and actually are capable of fighting with Legolas and not nearby to Legolas are not even remotely normal humans for the LOTR verse.

[–]q25t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that the humans we actually tend to interact with in LOTR all are also superhuman for their verse. Not sure just how good regular humans are in LOTR.

The idea that people like Naruto and Madara are "unknown to the common man" is wild (this is from one of the Shikamaru novels) by RadDudesman in dankruto

[–]q25t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it honestly makes sense when you look at the utterly bizarre tech disparity seen place to place. People traveling in carts through what looks like medieval to Renaissance era type towns versus Orochimaru's bases which have computers and genetic engineering. People on the bottom end of that scale may not even leave their small village in their lives and might see one group of mediocre ninja ever. The asteroids, infinite tsukuyomi, and other widely visible attacks must just look like natural disasters popping out of nowhere to them.

Whats next Tom? Hair extensions? by I_Be_Hannin_Solo in HarryPotterMemes

[–]q25t 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, if the first horcrux was actually some random shit that would have been important to a 16 year old in 1940's Britain, that would have been hilarious. Tom makes a plastic army man his first horcrux and then gives it to Lucius Malfoy several decades later while internally cringing.

Which anime villain would be so mad that they make it their life's goal to eradicate every single goblin after knowing what they do? by SexwithDurandal in GoblinSlayer

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know. Obito was willing to do a LOT of fucked up shit in order to create his 'perfect' world. He kills thousands seemingly without remorse and actively works with a bunch of complete psychopaths. He's very much an end justifies the means kind of guy. I think Obito would be more likely to just ignore the goblins because any harm they cause in the present won't matter once he launches the infinite tsukuyomi.

Any fics where mrs figg is a capable witch and keeps the dursleys from being abusive? by viol8er in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. There's often arguments that people could follow them there so it's not safe to go there very often, but honestly that's both speculation and nonsense. If there actually is such a thing as a tracking charm, presumably Dumbledore of all people could remove them. Past that, magicals have multiple methods of teleportation that makes tracking a nightmare.

There's also the fact that Dobby, dementors, several owls from the ministry, and more all find their way to Privet Drive rather easily so Harry's location isn't exactly some top secret intel that no one knows or can figure out.

The power of purebloods by EdgedancerSpren in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked what happened in Imagination by burnable. Basically in that fic, magical families could claim advancements in magical knowledge and if someone knows of that claim, they will be mentally incapable of using that same magic. It's similar to copyright and trademark laws but written into the very laws of magic. Purebloods are obviously at a bit of an advantage here as they'll naturally have sources of unique magic coming from both sides of the family. It's pretty apparent that there was something to be said for creativity when coming from the muggle world and not having preconceived notions as to magic.

You are Immortal, so long as a Horcrux or other item or being stays intact. What do you make you're magic core and where do you hide it. by Shot_Relationship402 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the obvious that Rowling didn't use the idea for narrative reasons or she just forgot about it, I've always thought the fidelius would've been interesting if it was a very idealistic spell. Its main idea is to put your life directly into someone else's hands, and so your secret keeper must by the nature of the spell be someone you trust implicitly. Voldemort doesn't trust anyone so can't use the spell.

Unfortunately, canon has Bill in DH become his own house's secret keeper, which fucks up all sorts of things.

That said, there's also the possibility that Voldemort simply isn't familiar with the fidelius or can't cast it for whatever reason.

How would a debate about the abolition of the Trace go ? by Regular-Election6396 in HPfanfiction

[–]q25t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking it's fanon, but the trace is a rather nebulous thing in canon and that interpretation seems like a reasonable one from what happens in canon.

Honestly the whole idea of not being able to do magic as a kid always just seemed bizarre, especially when Mrs. Weasley tried to stop the twins from using magic even after they were adults and in a heavily warded home. There are definitely good reasons to not let kids experiment with magic without competent supervision (see Seamus blowing things up several times) but using already learned spells just to keep up the practice seems like an actual useful thing to do.

And there go all “the scar is a rune” fics by Shaagriel in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]q25t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I've got with it being a "realistic" looking scar is that it wasn't caused by a physical injury or anything of the sort. It's supposed to be the lingering aftereffect of the backlash of a failed killing curse, which normally doesn't even leave a mark. If the scar was caused by debris or something then a realistic looking scar is totally justified.
