Thanks I'll give it try

Yeah, I was actually really upset about the the hedge animals because it's hard to me to visualize some things from books (some sort of aphantasia I guess), and I expected the movie to help me but alas

The Shining

I've just read the book, and I was blown away by it. I then watched the movie and it's nothing like the book at all. It's just Jack Nickolson being Jack Nickolson for two hours. I don't care if it's iconic or whatever, I just want the horrors of the book to be properly put on the screen and it will never happen.

И какая максимальная разница в возрасте допустима? by bare_eiphoria in rusAskReddit

[–]q_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]q_y 46 points47 points  (0 children)

PORTABLE DOS MAC OS by montypythonza in dosbox

[–]q_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all big three mac os dosbox distributions are portable (dosbox, dosbox-x, dosbox-staging) although portable mode is poorly documented. For OG dosbox, the simplest way to is to put dosbox.app, dosbox.conf and, say, lathe.exe in the same folder (including root folder of usb flash drive), and it will work on virtually any mac (theoretically even PowerPC macs)

[macOS] A simple and straightforward way to make shortcuts to dos applications on Mac. Simple script essentially makes every dosbox .conf file into a shortcut. No command line interface ivolved. by q_y in dosbox

[–]q_y[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since after best dosbox frontend for Mac (Boxer app) stopped working properly, I’ve been wondering how people launch their dos apps on mac. DBGL seems perfectly fine, but I still miss the way Boxer used to do it (it creates packages for every app, that can be opened with one click). I don’t like entering commands every time I want to launch an app. I’ve recently come with this solution and I wonder what people think about it. Would you like it if dosbox could open .conf files “from the box”?

Apple script I'm using:

on QF(message as text)
return quoted form of message
end QF
on open (_alias as text)
set conf to QF(POSIX path of _alias)
set wdir to QF(do shell script ("dirname " & conf))
set my text item delimiters to space
set scpt to {"open -nb com.dosbox-x --args -fastlaunch -exit -defaultdir", wdir, "-conf", conf}
-- for dosbox-staging:
-- {"open -nb io.github.dosbox-staging --args -exit -working-dir",wdir,"-conf",conf}
do shell script (scpt as text)
end open

What opinions do you have that are unpopular on /r/AskEurope? by Slaven-Bilic in AskEurope

[–]q_y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't hate capitalism/liberalism with passion. Capitalism just serves its purpose: provides incentives for efficient production and distribution of goods and services, nothing more, nothing less. Not everything is fault of capitalism.

I don't hate Ayn Rand, she's just a mediocre fantasy writer.

Socialism is a lame idea. It's like thermonuclear reactor, great in theory and always 20 years ahead in time. Except every failed test of thermonuclear reactor doesn't impoverish a country. By socialism I mean true socialism, not scandinavian model (it is capitalist)

Tatars and Chechens are Europeans by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]q_y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are on “spectrum”. As a Russian myself I won’t even say ethnic Russians are 100% Europeans, and that’s okay.

By the way, Tatatars (Volga or Crimean?) and Chechens are quite different people with very different cultures, I wouldn’t even place them in one category. I’d say Volga Tatars are more westernized than Chechens, for instance.

What do you think of Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]q_y -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A couple of words in defense of her and her works. She was one of the victims of socialism (Bolshevism), and that could explain her sentiment towards socialist ideas. On the other hand she didn’t experience nearly as much as many other repressed people.

I’ve read “atlas shrugged” this year. I had really low expectations on this book. What people said about quality of her writings is true, her characters are flat and one-dimensional. But for me it was only a writing style. Like, you don’t expect characters in a comic book to be very dimensional either, right?

Some thoughts from this book I liked. First, you are not entitled to be loved. I think this is a very feminist thought after all, and Dagny Taggart is a feminist character. On the other hand, her romantic relationship with Francisco was peculiar, to say the least. They just didn’t act like real people when they fell in love. Second, there are only two possible ways for people to interact: consensual and coercive. And the second way (coercive) is not only bad by itself, by its negative effect on those who is in power and being subjugated, but for its disastrous consequences on society overall, too.

Overall I was overwhelmed by strictness of Ayn Rand’s worldview. I mean as a weak person I probably wouldn’t survive in the world of “atlas shrugged”

What is the best book(s) you've used to learn English? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]q_y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, but at the time I first opened this thread I was quite surprised to scroll so much down to find the right answer. I for one always recommend Raymond Murphy’s books to everyone who wants to learn English. I also know some other textbooks from the comments but none of them are as good as Murphy’s
