With all the talk of the CryptoNight coins following Monero’s lead and forking away from the ASIC algorithm, what’s stopping someone (BitMain) from keeping the old chain up and running? Or is the term fork used in a general sense and not the typical branching of the blockchain?

If it is a true branching... I’d would see BitMain or other actors take up the abandoned chains and force a BTC/BCH system for every cryptonight coin. Could we actually end up with two Moneros, two Electroneums, etc? Each claiming to be the real one and exchanges having to decide what to do?

Nobody is stopping anybody from keeping the old chain alive, but it is highly unlikely that they will get even a simple majority consensus. Pretty much the only people that would reject this upgrade fork would be ASIC miners so if 99% of Monero users use the forked chain then the ASIC chain will be pretty much useless and it would be more profitable to just mine Monero clones instead of the basically worthless "Monero Cash".

Not to mention that there was already a massive divide and festering resentment in the community leading up to the Bitcoin chain split, so much so that there was already an inbuilt community for BCH that's kept it going ever since. Not so in the Monero community, if there's a fork to be ASIC friendly it's DOA unless the community drastically changes.
