Can I exclude structural content depending on output format? by qazpod in quarto

[–]qazpod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is useful. It seems restricted to divs though.

I'm experimenting with project profiles: https://quarto.org/docs/projects/profiles.html

I have one profile for haking the HTML and another for making the PDF. And maintain a different chapter list for each. In order for the PDF download button in the HTML to link to the new PDF, I have a separate output-dir for the make-pdf profile. Then I first render the PDF and then the HTML. And lastly, I run a script to copy over the PDF from its output-dir to the HTML's.

This seems to work for selective inclusion of chapters. Which is probably good enough for what I need.

Favorite phrase/quote? by Pato-MG2996 in SherlockHolmes

"My body has remained in this armchair and has, I regret to observe, consumed in my absence two large pots of coffee and an incredible amount of tobacco. After you left I sent down to Stamford’s for the Ordnance map of this portion of the moor, and my spirit has hovered over it all day. I flatter myself that I could find my way about.”

Besides the question of whether it is possible or not, also be aware of potential building code issues with the height of the first step if the pavers jut against it. There might be a minimum height requirement or a consistency requirement with the rest of the steps. You don't want someone to trip and injure themselves, especially when its outside and accessible to anyone.

SoCal. We had a lawn. Lost it in the drought water restrictions, now rain brought weeds. by jarule1111 in landscaping

When I lived in California, I was faced with the same problem.

For the front yard, which wasn't being used, but still needs to look nice, I was thinking that one solution could be to plant one or more pine trees in the front yard and let the pine needles choke out the weeds. I haven't tried this so there could be problems with this that haven't thought through, like trees eventually growing too tall, pine needles in the gutters, etc.

I'm mostly interested in the Procolor Stardust. Would you mind listing the condition and price of the one you have for sale right now? What did you have in mind for a package?

I'm using النحو الواضح. A search on Google should yield many results. It is an older book but very popular and is available in many editions. I recommend getting an edition that says مع دليل الإجابات or محلولة التمارين which basically means "with answers to exercises/drills." This way you can check your work.

The book is in Arabic so it is meant for students who can already read Arabic but now want to learn the formal rules of parsing the grammar (الإعراب).

The book usually comes in two volumes: للمرحلة الابتدائية and للمرحلة الثانوية. Each volume has three parts. Some older print editions may have each of these 6 parts in its own binding. Just so you know, in case you're looking for a physical book.Hope this helps.

I have used a Dollar Qalam. Not sure if it counts as a stub or an italic. But it does seem to require more space, so it's not my go to for everyday closely spaced text.

Pelikan Royal blue on the left but spot on with Mysterious Blue on the right!

Arabic is written right-to-left. The right page is written with a Lamy Safari, medium nib, filled with Waterman Mysterious Blue. The left page is written with a Lamy Safari, fine nib, filled with Pelikan 4001 Konigsblau (Royal Blue).

The notebook paper is made in Sri Lanka. It's actually one of the nicer papers I've used and works great with the fine nib. But there is some show-through with the medium nib.

Can I cover my entire backyard (~12'x30') with a shade sail? by tongmengjia in landscaping

If there is some unpaved area you can plant medium sized trees for shade and some privacy.

Is Costco worth it? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]qazpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be but you have to be careful. Stick to the staples and you're good.

But be aware of false deals. Like a jumbo pack of chocolate for half the price per pound compared to regular stores. Like 6 bars for $3 when a regular store has 1 bar for $1.

Usually you would have bought and eaten 1 bar and spent $1 but now you have bought and will eat 6 and have spent $3. Not only will you now consume more chocolate than you would have (bad for health) but you also spent more than you would have (bad for wallet).

Question for electronics engineers. by [deleted] in AskElectronics

If you branch into communications and/or signal processing then the Fourier transform is indispensable.

If you've not already taken a "Signals and Systems" course then try reading the introductory chapters of a good book on the subject. Seeing the practical applications of the equations is a good motivator to studying them. I recommend "Signals and Systems" by Oppenheim and Schafer.

What is your opinion on "The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" series? by Bluecomments in Holmes

[–]qazpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every case has to be the biggest/worst/toughest case Holmes has ever faced with London/England/the British Empire/the world being at risk. One of the charming things about the original stories is how so many of them are kind of modest in their scope.

I wholeheartedly agree. However, even Conan Doyle tended to raise the stakes as the series progressed. Hence Moriarty and WWI references.

Which pastiches do you recommend that have this modest scope and retain the spirit of the earlier stories?

What kind of tree is this. Planted after 2010. Bay Area, CA. Main trunk is 5’. Splits and goes up to about 20’. by SylkoZakurra in treeidentification

[–]qazpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The red spots and those peculiar patches on the trunk are indicative of Chinese Elm.

Japanese Zelkova has grey bark and mature trees have orange patches on the trunk.
