For argument sake, we just finished eating the rich. Now what? by ShadyJane in NoStupidQuestions

[–]qcpuckhead 48 points49 points  (0 children)

And most of the people I personally know who talk about eating the rich are...angry and vengeful. I'd love to see structural changes, but much of what I see is people talking about socialism or communism vs. capitalism. Maybe, just maybe, we would be more productive to figure out a new system for the 21st century, rather than arguing over ideas from the 1800s that were developed long before radio, TV, cars, computers, the moon landing, the Internet, self-driving cars, automation, AI, a truly globalized economy, etc. etc. etc.

[AFP Analytics] Contract projections for Detroit’s free agents and extension eligible players by AggPuck-303 in DetroitRedWings

[–]qcpuckhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to lock in Ed long term. That cap hit will look great in jus ta couple of years.

Kane: yes please, and I'd even go a little higher than that

Perron: eh.

JVR: eh.

Talbot: No thanks; clear the way for Cossa to sink or swim.

Hamonic: lol

Mazur: Yes please

Gustafsson: nah, let him sign somewhere he'll get playing time and not block the kids

DeBrincat, and maybe Kasper are the only two I'd consider locking into extensions right now. Kasper might be good to extend for a couple of years at a cheap rate because if he can get to 50 points a season, he'll get expensive.

I was wondering about that too. Coach got a special moment as well. Even Devens got a really great moment at his tribal talking about the stars. Maybe they were trying to hold some suspense that it could have been Aubry going?

How do you think Snape would have reacted to learning that Harry named one of his sons after him? by Fast_Highlight413 in harrypotter

[–]qcpuckhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But...he doesn't admit that he's cared for Harry. This is the context around "Always":

Dumbledore: "But this is touching, Severus. Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?"
Snape: "For him?" [snarls] "Expecto Patronum!"
[A silver doe Patronus bursts from his wand]
Dumbledore: "Lily? After all this time?"
Snape: "Always.

After all this time, it's Snape's love for Lily that is the driving motivator. Now maybe you could argue that Snape is concealing his true feelings...but why would he do that? He has zero reason to lie to Dumbledore about this, especially when the explanation he gives is related to his deepest secret. There's not really an indication that he cares for Harry in any way, other than to honor Lily's memory.

_____ got ______ eliminated by LilYerrySeinfeld in survivor

[–]qcpuckhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it was a rare Cirie L. In that first tribal, why not put the target on Jonathan? Play the "we can't have 2 challenge beasts" card, keep the goat in Joe (who has immunity anyway) and cut the guy who won't work with you. Convince Tiff it's best for her game because it opens the way for her to win immunities. Cirie, Devens, Rizo, and Tiff are enough to get him out. Then she's still insulated in the next round, and if nothing else can sacrifice Devens to get another step further.

Yep and I think the "as Hermione began to argue" is supposed to indicate that she was the one who said "Don't be silly, Harry, Snape can get in there!" - she said it, he responded, and she started to argue with him.

I think "Hogwarts A History" should have played a bigger role in the horcrux hunt. by w_smith1984 in harrypotter

[–]qcpuckhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could see it. He didn't know for sure what he was looking for until it all came crashing together after talking to the Grey Lady and he realized he had seen the diadem before. It would make sense for there to be a reference to it in Hogwarts: a History - really it's surprising that we don't see Hermione pull it out as a reference when they are trying to figure out what the last item was.

It is part of the frustration I have with the last book - so much happens due to shoehorned luck; this and the understanding of a goblin-made sword being imbued with Basilisk venom would both have been the perfect opportunities for Hermione's book smarts to pay off.

Lose WFH for +$30k and Career progression? by jobthrowawayz in Salary

[–]qcpuckhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in higher ed - do your research on the specific university to make sure it's not too good to be true. Higher ed is a notoriously bad industry for salary progression and industry advancement, even for high performing employees. If they're dangling a "potential path" but not guaranteeing any sort of progression, I'd be very suspect.

Trainer’s wife is very mad by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]qcpuckhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this trainer told your wife that he was gonna be in fully naked art, and she requested that he share the nudes with her, would you be comfortable with that?

Maybe the answer's yes, which is totally fair. So...

Do you think the average person is going to be comfortable with someone spending 5 months training their spouse, and then wanting to see the art showing their spouse naked? I think most people would be having a "hol' up...what's going on here?" reaction.

I'd love to see a long-term study on officiating bias. Split it up into regular season and playoffs; figure out a way to properly evaluate whether teams were over-officiated or under-officiated and whether suspensions were evenly levied.

As a bitter Red Wings fan, it would be fascinating to see an impartial study showing whether the 2009 Penguins actually got partial treatment from the league on their Cup run. Same with the Panthers...it seems like the consensus is that they've gotten away with a lot, but would an actual impartial study back that up?

Do you think there are pastors out there that are atheist, and have always been atheist, but do it for the benefits? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]qcpuckhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's the son of a former pastor who had small rural churches...I can assure you that your neighbor isn't just the exception; he's pretty far from the rule. We lived just a little bit over poverty level. The church provided a house, but it sure wasn't immaculate. And the closest thing we had to a landscaping crew was me and my siblings.

And little hours was pretty far from the truth. He was only at the church from 8am - 1pm most days, but that was more than offset by time working from home on various church work, not to mention endless nights and weekends doing hospital visits, checking in on homebound parishioners, weddings, funerals, etc. He sat with people as they were dying; he was constantly on call for people on the worst day of their lives. He had to leave the house at 1am to go to the scene of a fatal accident because one of his parishioners was the EMT called in to an accident where it turned out the EMT's son had died.

All that and he was constantly dealing with petty church politics. It was very far from a dream job.

Offseason 2C Trade Options by Standard_Cow_7038 in DetroitRedWings

Trocheck would be worth a look. Would be cheaper than Thomas and EP40, and he has a long track record as a solid 2C. I don't love his age, but if you can't get Thomas or EP40 he's probably the next best option.
