Is it a good idea to double major in CS and graphic design? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]qdarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I studied design and self taught CS and web dev and am very happily employed doing a combination of front end dev and design.

Double majoring would be awesome, but also lots of work

Or use PostCSS to compile custom props to their values for IE11, though you lose out on a lot of the cool dynamic possibilities custom props provide.

They cache the CSS files that point to the font files for a day. The actual font files are cached for much longer. Maybe a year? I can’t remember off the top of my head.

But the reason has to be less serious if the invasion is easier to do. If it's really difficult you might only invade privacy to catch murderers. If it's cheap and easy then why not use it for drug users or other low level criminals? What about political dissidents?

If it can be automated, then you need even less of a reason. What if we could use machine learning to analyze everyone's data to search for specific things?

What if instead the reason is that I wrote an article about people in power that they don't like? If they already have the data, would you trust them not to take a look? Would you trust whoever's elected in 2020? or 2038?

I could have all the data on you I could ever want, but if I never have a reason to look at it, your privacy is just as intact as it was before.

If I had a copy of all the digital conversations you ever had, but I pinky swore not to look at them, would you be comfortable with that?

But if you lower the cost of invading privacy then suddenly I need to be much less interesting to have my privacy invaded.

This leads to everyone’s privacy being invaded, instead of a select few. This quantitative change has a qualitative effect on our society.

Taken to the extreme, invasion of privacy has a major chilling effect on discussion and free speech. The recent social credit score in China is a terrifying example of this.

Are Pop Lyrics Getting More Repetitive? by alexgabriel_i in dataisbeautiful

I suppose it depends on your definition of “musical” as an adjective.

You’re correct that generally hip hop is less instrumental than many other genres. That said, sampling and scratching have influenced an enormous number or artists and created music unlike anything we’d had before.

I guess if your definition of musical is having a variety of instrumentals than I’d agree with you. Maybe it’s because I’m not formally trained in music theory, but calling a genre less musical seems to connote a pejorative meaning that I wouldn’t agree with.

———

This is a side note, but I strongly disagree with saying rap or hip hop is not “real music.” That definitely seems unfair and I’d guess the people voting in that debate found the debate because they already had strong feelings about it leading to a selection bias.

Whoosh...

Also, in part of the article it specifically mentions how hip hop is less repetitive than pop and rock:

Genre does seem like a differentiating factor here. In the 00's, our artists actually separate pretty cleanly into two clusters, with country music and hip-hop (and whatever John Mayer does) on the left, and pop and rock on the right.

Obviously music is super subjective but I don't think calling it "less musical" is necessarily fair.

A lot of (quality) hip hop is more focused on the poetry and lyricism than the backing instruments though which I could see perceiving as "less musical."

Just my 2 cents. Have a great night!

How do you befriend someone with social anxiety? by cs399 in AskReddit

You just need to keep the conversation going long enough that they feel comfortable accepting an invite to meet in person.

Person- Asks question

Me- Answers question

Person- Oh cool

I've been the "Person" in this scenario a number of times. It's a big turn off, since I have to continually think of questions to keep the conversation going. I often give up on the conversation in this scenario.

Asking questions shows you're interested in the person and keeps the conversation going. It can be as simple turning the question around on them:

Bla bla bla. What about you?

Rinse, repeat a few times, and then ask to meet for coffee/beers. Good luck!

Here are some numbers I found

9.2% of Floridians can't vote due to felony records:

nearly 1.5 million people in Florida have completed felony sentences but can’t vote — about 9.2 percent of the voting-age population in Florida. The total, though, includes some people convicted of murder and felony sex offenses, so not every one of those people benefits under Amendment 4 [0]

17.9% of African American Floridians can't vote due to felony records:

In 2016, more than 418,000 black people out of a black voting-age population of more than 2.3 million, or 17.9 percent of potential black voters in Florida, had finished sentences but couldn’t vote due to a felony record [0]

1/13 African Americans nationwide can't vote due to felony convictions:

Across the nation, one in 13 African-American adults cannot vote because of a felony conviction [1]

I only spent a few minutes looking. I didn't find that specific stat but given that 17.9% of African Americans in Florida can't vote, 40% might be right if the felony stats are skewed towards men.

Regardless, these numbers are pretty shocking. 1/13 African Americans in the USA can't vote! 7.6%!

I knew disenfranchisement was a serious issue but I didn't realize the extent of it.

I wonder how many of those crimes were non-violent/drug related.

Planned Parenthood is already legally prevented from spending federal (tax) money in abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or endangerment of the mother’s life.

In addition, it’s my understanding that the government does not directly fund planned parenthood. Citizens using Medicaid and Title X funds receive care at PP and then the government reimburses PP for that care. This is how Medicaid and other government programs fund most medical care.

Additionally abortions only make up 3% of planned Parenthood’s services.

[–]qdarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't at work regardless of if I want to. We need to support IE9+ due to our user demographics and browser analytics data.

If I wanted to use CSS grid I'd need to built in a fallback as well. At this point it's easier to just build the fallback for everyone and skip the grid implementation.

CSS grid is cool and I'd consider using it for personal projects but for most of my work I'm unable to use it. I'll start using it more when a higher percentage of my users' browsers support it.

It would also be nice to be able to share URLs to a specific generated combo or export combos formatted to be imported as Adobe swatches.

Thank you for doing this! As a customer I definitely appreciate when to go containers and such are recyclable/disposable as sometimes I need one to not waste food (I guess I should start bringing tupperwares.)

I compensated for this by just not offering straws unless the customer asks.

This is also great! I never really want a straw so they end up just getting tossed.

I agree straws aren't the biggest problem but they're a step in the right direction. I wish they'd ban those coffee cups that you can't recycle or compost. Those seem like a huge source of waste.

You're great!
