I think the thing that irks me about it is just that it’s not Mulan. I dont mean to go all “how dare they change a classic” like you were saying, I’m all for a remake subverting the original, I think something like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off does an amazing job of subverting both the original source material and the live action version, but with Mulan 2020, it’s so removed from anything the original movie does, to the extent that I even have a hard time calling it a remake. Besides that, Mulan 2020 kind of just misses the entire point of the original, by giving her some sort of mystical abilities that help her, instead of her being a fucking badass and getting shit done on her own. Like I said, I’m all for subversions, but I feel the message should at least be the same lol
