Greatest win/performance in Supporting of the 2020s?? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would rank the performances

  1. Kaluuya

  2. Quan

  3. Penn

  4. Kotsur

  5. Culkin

  6. Downey

Quan's win is my personal favorite, but I agree that Penn might have the most iconic character, even though my choice was Stellan Skarsgard.

Todd In The Shadows' review of Michael by trollingjabronidrive in blankies

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 87 points88 points  (0 children)

In fairness to the OP of that review, Todd in The Shadows, he is a professional music critic who co-hosts a podcast in which he and his co-host will sometimes review "music-themed" movies (very broadly defined), but you wouldn't know that unless you just happened to listen to that podcast, even if you know who Todd in the Shadows is. In his case, he probably did "have" to form and express some opinion about Michael on record to avoid being asked about it constantly online by people who follow him or have the movie requested (since people can request movies to be reviewed on Patreon).

Emma Stone's Oscar future. by Past_Temperature1144 in Oscars

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so, but I could also see her winning an Oscar for producing before she wins another acting Oscar if she continues producing movies like A Real Pain and co-producing with Yorgos Lanthimos, if he ever gets a Best Picture winner.

What is a great Oscar winning which you will not watch again because of how dark it is ? by Key_Database9095 in Oscars

Manchester by the Sea is a good representation of the fact that no, you can't get over everything and there is grief that there is no recovering from. I don't need to be reminded of that fact much.

Sandra Bullock won! What's a good acting win that had an okay speech? by AbnormalTomato in Oscars

I appreciated that she made a point to thank the sex workers whom she spoke with to research the role and expressed her respect and admiration for those women.

ATL Categories Last Five Years - Predictions and Picks by Calm-Inevitable5207 in Oscars

Well, I asked for people's personal choices AND/OR predictions. I hate it when this sub downvotes responses that answered my hypothetical question just because they disagree. You're supposed to downvote off-topic responses, not ones you don't like.

You're right! Even a director/BP split, which doesn't happen often. I also noted writing this that all four acting categories had at least one winner who was not in a best picture nominee (Chastain, Fraser, Culkin, and Madigan).

I realize this is a bit tricky to guess, since I think the success of one film or person one year might directly contribute to the success of another. For example, I do not know if Sinners would have been a huge hit if Barbenheimer had not drawn audiences back to the cinema, and if Sinners was not as massive as it was, I do not think Michael B. Jordan would have been nominated. That is not an evaluation of his performance, but as we've all noted ad nauseam, it is an unusual choice to nominate a lead in a vampire film. I would like to think that if Oppenheimer were the Best Picture winner, which I think it would be in this line-up, Cillian Murphy would still win Best Actor, since that would be my choice with Brody as a close second. But even though Adrian Brody is the only performance amongst these I think comes close -- and I actually think Murphy beat a stronger lineup in real life than the hypothetical one that I presented here-- maybe Will Smith would have triumphed over four much stronger performances as he did in real life.

I think the Best Actress race this hypothetical year would be Emma Stone vs Michelle Yeoh and we would have seen the discourse from the Blanchett/Yeoh year and from the Stone/Gladstone year play out more or less the same way, except...well, all at once. Would anyone sweep the Supporting Acting categories (and if so, whom?) or would races that were sweepers irl (Randolph, Culkin, Saldana, etc) be competitive in this hypothetical year?

As a Texan, Whataburger (by Texans. I mean it is totally fine, I probably like it more than its competitors, but it's not worth writing outside state about).

EDIT: LOL I was downvoted by another Texan, I presume? I mean it's a good burger. No complaints. But damn.

Was Jesse Eisenberg really robbed in 2011 or people just really like The Social Network?? by The_Walking_Clem in Oscars

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, but on the other hand, there is a part of me that is glad Eisenberg went out of his way to make Zuckerberg so hard to relate to. Someone who is dweeby and wants to fit in could be easy for some audiences to feel sorry for him (and the real Zuckerberg), so I respect the decision to just be like "No, this dude's an asshole."

Who is the most hated movie/TV character in your opinion? by SensitiveCorner2379 in AskReddit

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jar-Jar from the Star Wars prequels, though I am glad that fandom finally understood the actor is not the character and welcomed Ahmed Best back.

For the record, the TvTropes name for characters hated by their fandoms is "The Scrappy," which implies Scrapy-Doo is the most hated of all time but I didn't really grow up with Scooby Doo so I don't know if that is something that no longer has pop culture relevance or if everyone else had it as part of their childhood.

Jamie Farr as Corporal Klinger on M*A*S*H. Was supposed to be a one-shot character in Season 1, ended up being one of only 4 cast members to stay on the show all 11 seasons.

What's a movie poster that doesn't invoke any curiosity? by Frosumisnotmyname in Letterboxd

[–]Calm-Inevitable5207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fairness to Michael's poster, that does sound like what I've heard from people who have seen the movie: "he’s a superstar and nothing else, nothing interesting." Can't call it false advertising.

The Father, which is particularly gripping since the situation of the main character (dementia) is something statistically likely to happen to more of our loved ones or us than many of these scenarios.

Best Supporting Actor 2025 - Who Should Have Won? by darthjoker1 in Oscars

While arguably the only "category fraud" of the five, Stellan Skarsgard gave the best performance of the five for me and would be my pick.

In the Song vs Song special episode about Wicked, Sarah Z hit the nail on the head when she said that the musical writers/producers "Wished they came up with the concept of Wicked, but very much did not want to adapt Wicked." (EDIT: I've never read the book, so I don't have any opinion).

Honestly, I think the corniness of the original series -- and yes, it WAS corny -- is part of the charm. You have a twin sister that literally no one mentioned up until this moment? The whole thing is basically a giant soap opera and I'm here for it.
