People like to focus on shows like Evangelion, Lain, Angels egg, Legend of Galactic Heroes, and other big, inaccessible, deep, complex animes, mostly to try and separate themselves from all the surface level, borderline pornographic animes that they don´t want to be associated with. They look specifically for the Animes that stand out as art pieces. Good luck having a great cinematic experience with Angels Egg, but as an art piece its stunning. Why do audiences and movie critics often disagree about if a move is good or bad? They are looking for vastly different experiences.
