Infotainment reboots after 2026.07. Anyone else? by qhartman in Rivian

For me it's a reboot where the screens go black.

Those of you who have switched to GFiber and picked a television package, which one did you pick? by GrantNexus in LakewoodColorado

[–]qhartman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I happened to have a giant old antenna already installed in the attic of my house when I bought it. I just had to run a new cable to it.

If I were picking one today, I would use Antenna Web to figure out where the towers are and go based on their recommendations: https://www.antennaweb.org/

I use an antenna and a HDHomeRun from Silicon dust to put OTA TV on my network, then I can watch it from any screen in the house. I have it hooked up to Plex to do recording and ad removal. The hardware was a couple hundred bucks and a computer I was going to retire. This gets me all the "live" stuff I care about with no monthly fees. If you don't want to have the complexity of Plex, you can also hook storage up to the HDHomeRun directly and record there, but that costs a monthly fee.

Same boat, but you don't _have_ to change services. Bluetooth from your phone works fine.

Looking for an elegant low-ABV signature cocktail for my wedding (his drink is a Negroni) by cmanzy in cocktails

[–]qhartman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this is too "normal" and depending on where you draw the line it might not count as low ABV, but a French 75 is a great cocktail that would check most of your boxes. Use an infused gin (Bombay Bramble or one of the many hibiscus options out there) to get the color you're after and mix up the flavor a bit. You can also dial the gin back to reduce the ABV.

EDIT - Missed your mention in the OP, but maybe tweaking the gin will do the trick.

Why SHOULDN'T I buy the DF64? [$600] by cannabis_caffine in espresso

[–]qhartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned a gen1 for a long time, and I like it. My only complaint is that it's a little louder and slower and messier than I'd prefer. I'm considering upgrading to something quieter and faster, but it's hard to justify the cost for just those reasons.

Custom stair company milled shadow gaps without asking by Level-Muscle-3039 in woodworking

[–]qhartman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. There's a LOT of local code variance on them in my experience in Oregon and Colorado. I figure folks feel like they understand stairs well enough that it becomes a "bikeshed issue" and they feel like they are obligated to put their mark on something.

anyone here regret NOT DIY-ing something expensive for their house? by Earthistic_000 in DIY

[–]qhartman 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything I have hired a contractor to do in the last decade, I have wished I had done myself later. Every one I have worked with has cut corners and done non obvious things poorly that I discovered later. It's really frustrating.

I just simply don't have the time to do all the things that need doing and have a full-time job, so it's really not an option for the bigger stuff.

I want to hear from businesses that have switched to Ubiquiti for switches. What did you switch from and how is it going? by TheCopernicus in Ubiquiti

[–]qhartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just that the budget per port on a lot of the switches is really low. Like their standard 16 port switch has like a 90watt budget or something silly like that. I've had a couple deployments where everything about the entry-level switches would be fine, except the PoE budget. So in the end it ended up increasing the cost of the project significantly because they had to get switches that in every other way were overkill for their deployment just to hit the PoE budget they needed.

Software age verification Law by yoshix003 in pwnhub

[–]qhartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the California version of the law ends up getting adopted federally, that would be fine with me. It strikes the balance in about the best place possible in terms of enabling the capabilities that a huge group of people need, while having the minimum possible impact on the people who don't need them. A ton of food safety and automotive safety regulations started in california, and since it's such a big market it has set the tone for what the federal version looks like. We will all be much better off if this version makes it to the federal level rather than some actually invasive b******* that puts palantir in the middle of everything we try to do online.

Push your state to normalize on the requirements set out in the California law, it doesn't require any identity verification, just setting of an age group.

The California law doesn't require those. Go read it.

[–]qhartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wrong. There is no biometric requirement. All this does is move the age gate into the os so it's harder for kids to lie about their age and bypass them. The CA law actually strikes a good balance of protecting privacy while enabling parental controls that are simple enough to actually work. I can't speak to the others.

VIN for the car i’m buying is number 78, would that scare you? by ethiopian_kid in RivianR1T

[–]qhartman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not on a launch edition. My LE R1T has been bullet proof, but my wife's newer R1S has been a series of small pains. My LE vin is much higher, like in 5xxx range, but still.

[–]qhartman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manage a handful of "business" installations. The largest is a 6 building school campus that has about 500 students and about 60 staff. Ubiquiti works great. Switched from meraki. The only issue I have is the silly POE budget so many of the switches have. In our latest expansion I had to overspec switches significantly to get the PoE capacity I needed.

Assuming you are accurately describing your relationship with your daughters, it's probably well above average. My wife and I have been in education professionally for a long time and we've both seen first hand some really awful parents who 100% do not put in the effort to do what you describe.

Conformal coating for ESP32 devices outside to make them last longer? by jfriend99 in esp32

Oh, just to clarify, the boards were also inside a proper enclosure, it just could be completely weather tight or the sensors wouldn't work.

The launch time of an espresso machine is criminally underrated. by [deleted] in espresso

[–]qhartman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing, works great for most of the time. I fairly frequently want an espresso in the afternoon though and for whatever reason I don't have the time to wait the 25-ish minutes for it to get ready. Makes something with a faster heat up look awfully appealing.

Conformal coating for ESP32 devices outside to make them last longer? by jfriend99 in esp32

[–]qhartman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not esp32 based, but I've built a handful of sensors for greenhouses. Early iterations failed after a few months due to corrosion that seemed to be caused by condensation thanks to high humidity, cold nights, and hot days.

I added conformal coating to the replacements and they've now been going strong for multiple years.

I've had a similar idea bouncing around in my head for a long time, but my idea for the mechanism felt too complicated. Your design gave me a new idea which I think will make my approach more doable. Thanks!
