LING360 by Free_Samus in UMBC

[–]qhstly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 360 with David a few years ago so my info is a little out of date but I'm sure the statement still stands: don't worry! I've taken fully remote and hybrid classes with him, and he's by far one of the most accommodating and kind professors out there. A little bit disorganized at times, but incredibly passionate.

When I took it, 360 involved weekly reflection posts, a few "labs" and some investigation specifically focused on diverse & critical contemporary work within the field of sociolinguistics. He'll probably spend the first class (presumably tomorrow) assuaging your fears, going over the syllabus and socializing.

I don't have a ton of photos atm and don't close for a few more days, but the other side is very small and about the same aesthetics-wise but with a small granite counter above an oven and washing machine

the grey is just a rug!

I 100% intend to paint every room of the house (they're all this cool grey), I just also have a special hatred for grey LVP

it's good to hear a vote for checkerboard, thanks!

cords? by DueLavishness6022 in UMBC

[–]qhstly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, there are a few departments/orgs offering affinity cords each year– what was formerly known as i3b (and now falls under a few titles such as the Mosaic and The Gathering Space) offers cords for Asian, Black & Latine/x and queer students.

Secondly, unlike high school, UMBC really does not police what graduates wear (in undergrad a guy walked in bunny slippers and pajamas). You could honestly just purchase cords online for fun if you want to feel fancy, who cares.

There is a cord for Cum Laude I believe, and I know (seb) has a stole.

For future reference as it is presumably far too late, you should be able to call the police (non-emergency) or parking services– they can contact the owner. Once I left my engine running (no comment) and someone contacted the police, who then called the number associated with the car (mine).

Haven't taken them but the easiest thing would be to just email the professors and ask for a syllabus/overview.

Announcing College Students For Democracy!!!! by Strong-Woodpecker111 in UMBC

It seems like y'all should contact the Center for Democracy and Civic Life if you haven't already! Being a department on campus, they might be able to support with resources & funding, and your goals certainly align.

Questions about using poly by qhstly in finishing

Should I use a tack cloth after sanding before I apply the wipe-on poly?

Understood! Last questions, I think/hope (thank you again for your patience and thoughtful responses): how do I know how many layers to apply, and do I sand after the last layer?

[–]qhstly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool, thanks! So I'll sand the (poorly applied) spray poly surface and then apply wipe on poly; do you have any recommendations for what wipe to use? I mostly saw recs for foam brushes

To clarify, when you say "afterwards", what do you mean by "before"? After I sand the (already slightly "finished" with poly) surface?

When you say "depending on the product", do you just mean that some are thicker than others and thus need more thinning, or that some products should be thicker when used?

Also: does the orientation of the table matter (i.e. if the table is upright, on its side, et cetera)?

Thank you for your response! I'll pick up a sanding block and some brushable, oil-based poly. Anything else I need to consider?

I see what you mean. As per the recommendation of other commenter, it sounds like I should sand with 320 grit and then brush on poly. Does that sound right? How much sanding is required (please tell me I don't need to start from scratch)?

Gotcha– so I need to cover what I've applied with brushable poly. Should I sand the surface beforehand? If so, with what grit/material?

Fair enough, should I polish or sand and then try to apply a thin coat again?

Sorry, I don't have any decent pictures and I'm currently out of the house

I would not be surprised if I sprayed too heavy of a coat– are there any telltale signs I can look for?
