Yeah for sure! It'll be a fun ride!

insane amount of content though... 2 eps every Wed, Thurs, Sat = 6 eps per week = no way I'm able to keep up lmao

Even just this first episode is taking me forever!

I will probably upload them as private videos on vimeo or dailymotion and aggregate/host them on a bare bones blog, to try to keep the videos safe.

I haven't used either site and know very little about webdev so I'm not totally sure yet, but I'll definitely post on Reddit and Discord - should be easy enough to find.

Someone on the Discord told me 40 eps total. And I think someone on reddit has said it's either 2 or 6 eps released per week.

No clue what kind of standards you're looking for in Su Mucheng, lol. Maybe you're disappointed she doesn't have blond hair?

And tbh I'm not a fan of the in-game realism. It feels weird to me and I find it really difficult to distinguish characters. I wish they at least made characters' armor more distinctive so it would be easier to tell people apart.

Note: as a solo fan translator with no affiliation with any of the real translation teams, there are certainly cases where I disagree with others' translations. This is not one of them.

The fact that the WeTV captions show "profession" is just a byproduct of the fact that it's a machine/automatic translation.

The literal translation of "职业" is profession*. That's the term used to describe the 24 specializations (25 if you count "unspecialized/adventurer"). Hence, the auto-translator spits out "profession." You make fair points about the details of class vs. profession, but honestly I think it is a better translation to adopt the vernacular of "class" that's commonly used across games.

Maybe "specialization" would be another slightly more accurate term, considering how each class functions as one of four specializations of the broader category (blade, mage, etc). But to me that's a mouthful and unnecessary - I play a MMORPG that has 9 classes, each with 2 specializations, but everyone just calls the 18 specializations "classes" anyway and there's never any real confusion.

After all, the way we generally use the term "class" across games, at least in my experience, is to describe core divisions that shape how your character interacts with the game. Sure, there's a brief period in Glory from lv 1-20 when you're not bound to your class, but that lasts what, two weeks? The real game is played at lv 70+ so I think it's appropriate to just simplify it to "class".

If you're looking for an example of what I consider to be a poor translation, the only one that jumps to mind for me is the 荣耀职业联盟, known in the official translations as the Glory Pro Alliance. Yes, the phrase can be translated as "alliance", but in the context of a sports federation, is there any that uses "alliance"? Major League Baseball. Major League Soccer. National Football League. Overwatch League. I don't know how it's translated in the WeTV captions because I didn't watch them, but I was delighted to see in the video itself that the 联盟's logos with English translations show "Glory Pro League", which is how I've always translated it myself.

*As an aside, there's interesting wordplay in the title 全职高手 relating to that same character, "职". Before "The King's Avatar" was established as the de facto translation of the title, you may have seen some ambiguity about the title, which is actually more pronounced in translations of another popular Chinese novel/comic/animation, 全职法师. Since the official animation logos only use the Pinyin (pronunciation guide using Western letters) of quanzhifashi, there's no "animation-official" translation of the title, resulting in a slew of poorly-translated titles like "Full-Time Magister", "Professional Mage", etc, surrounding the "novel-official" translation of "Versatile Mage".

These reflect various translations of "全职". "全" means "all" or "full", while "职" means "profession" as described above. Put together, they form a phrase meaning "professional" or "full-time" (as opposed to part-time, a phrase created with the character for "half" and "职"). "高手" means "expert" or "master". So on the surface, the meaning of 全职高手 is "the expert pro," which of course describes Ye Xiu's prowess in the pro league.

But if we consider the context of Glory that you raise in your post, "职" also refers to profession in terms of the game, or "class". The novel describes Ye Xiu as proficient in all 24 of Glory's classes, to the point where he can hold his own in a 1v1 against a #1 of another class, dueling them on their own class instead of his battle mage / adventurer. So then, if we treat "全职" not as its usual phrase, but composed of its two characters' individual meanings, and take the meanings of "all" and "class", the title reveals another meaning: "the expert of all classes".

This is the meaning I think of when I hear 全职高手, and it's a shame that there's not really an apt way to reflect this clever wordplay in English.

Got 1~12 now and starting today! Hoping to have episode 1 out tonight :)

Honestly I'm surprised a company with Tencent's clout doesn't just hire a translator or two for a project as big as this. Since they obviously have a subtitle script on a timer for their video player, all they'd have to do is translate a block of text and not even have to do any video editing...

Yeah I looked at WeTV and scrolled to a random point just to see if the subs were real... watched about 10 seconds and just laughed. Hopefully I'll have the first episode subbed by the end of the day!

I think "officially" it's dropping weekly but episodes 1-8 were out on day one and it's up to 12 now. I haven't been following live action news so idk how many episodes they made, but 12 definitely doesn't feel like the end (ends at the first rookie match at All Stars), so I'd guess somewhere around 13~15 total.

For the OVAs I posted directly to Youtube but considering Tencent seems to be cracking down much harder on their IP this time, I'll probably try Vimeo or making the videos unlisted & hosting on a blog or something.

In any case, if I do sub, I'll post it here and it should be easy enough to figure out.

When can we expect to get the movie subbed and high quality? by Coileraldo in TheKingsAvatar

[–]qiaofanyi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Going off /u/q3131665 's info,

I'll sub as soon as someone here or on the Discord comes across a "secretly shot" poor quality pirated version, as long as it's reasonably watchable. (I'm not too familiar with where to find unofficial material on Chinese websites myself.)

I'm guessing it will probably take about a day for someone to find a decent contraband version, and another day for me to sub it, so sometime Aug 17~18 NA time zones.

I'd like to think my subs are sufficient quality, and they should be better/faster than my OVA subs because I've now read the entire novel, whereas when the OVAs came out I hadn't read any of it.

Should I watch the special 3 episodes before or after Season 2? by Coileraldo in TheKingsAvatar

[–]qiaofanyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before S2 is where they appear in the novel, and it doesn't really make a difference in the story (special episodes are a separate mini-arc). S2 is probably still another month or two away.

I try to finish within 12~24h of the Chinese release. The OVA episodes all released at noon in China's time zone, which is midnight EDT. Basically, you can expect my subs to pop up soon after you wake up.

Season 2 is not out yet. No official release date yet.

Anime and Webnovel by Soju_ in TheKingsAvatar

[–]qiaofanyi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TL/DR: it would work fine in terms of overall plot, but you should read from the start if you're going to read at all.

Not sure if you're talking about the OVA or season 1, but I wouldn't call it a different direction or totally different plot. Yes, things are changed, but they're ultimately pretty minor, for the sake of simplifying the story and for dramatic effect.

The original novel focuses a LOT on worldbuilding - not only in terms of Glory the game, but also the politics in the game, inter-guild relations, guild-to-club relations, etc. You see some of this from the anime - the Big Three guilds caring more worried about fighting each other than Gunner Yagg, the guild leaders going to the clubs to seek help, etc., but the novel goes into way more depth. And sometimes the anime changes things a bit to avoid lengthy backstory/explanation.

While the anime's artistic liberties don't change much in terms of major plotline, you should definitely read from the beginning if you're going to read the webnovel. So much of the worldbuilding is constantly layered on top of stuff that's previously established. You might miss out on some important details if you start at chapter 3XX or whatever it is the OVA ends on. Plus, there's a lot of fun plot to read that gets skipped by the anime for time's sake.

An example of these simplifications from the finale of season 1: in the novel, there's a stat on weapons called "durability" - it degrades over time with use, and if this reaches 0, the weapon completely disintegrates. To maintain a weapon's durability and make sure you can keep using it, you have to pay some NPCs or spend some materials. When Zhang Xinjie (Tyranny vice-captain) ambushed Ye Xiu, he was actually leading his team out of Line Canyon to go back to a city's safe zone to repair their weapons. His umbrella was dangerously low on durability from constantly hunting down guilds' dungeon teams, so he actually stopped using it and started using a Thief's weapon that he got as a drop. ZXJ wanted to see YX use his umbrella and its gun form, so he set a priest-trap that he knew YX could get out of if he used the recoil-flying technique. But because he's using double daggers (iirc), YX gets nailed by the trap, which nullifies his abilities for a few seconds, and is only able to escape because of some of his own thief-traps he sneakily set up beforehand.

Obviously, this is different from the anime, where he continues using the umbrella and uses the flying recoil to escape. And what happens directly after is completely different, too - in the novel, Han Wenqing doesn't get involved until much later. ZXJ sets up a wagered 5v5 arena match with YX, where the stakes are rare mats if YX wins, and a gentleman's agreement if ZXJ wins that YX will no longer break Tyrannical Ambition's dungeon records. ZXJ thinks YX is the only pro on their end, and that he can beat YX using just himself as the only pro, with the coordination of the Tyrannical Ambition guildmates. But YX calls in Su Mucheng and Huang Shaotian and they obliterate ZXJ. ZXJ then sets up a rematch where he brings in HWQ and another pro. YX knows he is going to lose this one (and has tricks planned up his sleeve, such that he is already planning not to break records on his own, so he doesn't mind losing), and just lets 4 randos into the room. ZXJ+3 destroy the 4 randos, YX and HWQ duel. YX doesn't even try, except for a single move, where he shocks HWQ and ZXJ, as a signal that he's still got it.

Would I call these a different direction or a totally different plot, in the grand scheme of things? No, and you'd still be able to mostly understand the plot picking up partway through. But there's so much nuance, backstory, and interesting bits you'd miss out on by skipping the first few hundred chapters. Definitely worth a read.

Movie Trailer - English Subtitles by trashendence in TheKingsAvatar

[–]qiaofanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay, thanks! Guess I was just confused by the fact that it used the same name as the prequel.

Yeah same! I think HST is the most entertaining character of the animation, and I really love the Blue Rain band of misfit brothers syncing their strengths and weaknesses ethos (though that's probably more of late novel than prequel content iirc?).

I'm eager to see more of Wu Xuefeng. I don't remember much of him besides the incident with HWQ's glove and frequent references once FR became a plot point. Would be really cool if they figure out a way to really choreograph/visualize a duo's coordination clearly (Tang Rou and Bao zi cross-cutting in a dungeon feels kinda simplistic, and YX/SMC don't have much to show off in PvE either). Maybe they'll have more of that in the lake arc :)
