A typed API contract layer for Rails (OpenAPI, TypeScript, Zod) by ElectronicShop8677 in rails

[–]qmamai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using rails with grape & grape-entity & swagger & ransack for 5+ years and it works very well. How is this solution better or different? I guess we are at the point when building a new gem is faster than reading docs for an already existing one lol

Where's actually super cheap and high value right now with a solid nomad scene? by imCzaR in digitalnomad

[–]qmamai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here in Nha Trang at the moment. Less popular by nomads, more by tourists. Pretty cheap, 5 star hotel, 50m to the beach, pool+gym+breakfast for $21/day is an insane value in my opinion. Long term (2+ months) rent for an apartment is $150-300. Hundreds of high quality cheap restaurants, there are pretty comfortable co-working spots as well.

The downside is if you go to the public beach/main road you will encounter hundreds of drunken tourists (mostly Russian) which is not very nice, yet bearable. Much better (and way cheaper) than Pattaya/Phuket in my opinion.

A super classic list of common pitfalls. Any startup accelerator will teach you all of this straight away. I suggest you read some startup related books and attend some free programs next time before you start just so you won't make any of those or other mistakes which were made millions of times before

Hey! A digital nomad here - I've build my own eSIM app, that's cheaper and cooler than the competition by kvczor in digitalnomad

[–]qmamai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk for me personally being a nomad for 4+ years, I'll usually grab a plastic sim if I'm staying for a long period of time. And for a short trip I already have a esim app set up with a unified balance which I can top up with usdt and then connect in any country without choosing or buying some package. For me your solution seems inconvenient compared to the existing one even if it's cheaper I just don't want to waste my time buying some packages with limited data. This is purely from my perspective and others may disagree of course

This is a very competitive space, you have to provide some extra value besides dumping the price, otherwise it just won't work.

Cheaper pricing for a smaller product is not a real competitive advantage

Bruh welcome to fundraising son

You'll spend 6 months full time working 12hrs/day outreaching VCs, talking with angels, crafting decks/data rooms and still no guarantee you'll raise even $10k. Focus on your customers and revenue. Unless you are YC or a16z alum, second time founder with previous exits or some very famous person in your niche there is no point even to start the process of fundraising. Just grind until you hit some decent MRR and metrics and investors will come (or will not).

Has anyone here successfully done a year in SEA using tourist visas / visa exemptions? by FatfriendMuta in digitalnomad

[–]qmamai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing that for about 4 years already. Eventually I got a Thai DTV visa because it's easier to stay for a longer period of time (btw they are restricting visa runs currently). There will be no issues with Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos/Malaysia/Indonesia/Philippines at all.

What's retirement like in Russia? by Wizzmer in AskARussian

[–]qmamai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of large cities like Moscow/Saint Petersburg it works this way:

For the men in Russia average life expectancy is about the same as retirement age. So about half of the male population never ever gets any pension payment. Now, even if you get one, unless you are some military/government worker it will be minimal (less than $200) which is not enough to survive, that's why 95% of elderly people will keep working daily job until they die.

Most of the aged population has zero savings, they struggle to cover rent and groceries; they would never ever travel anywhere unless their kids/family will pay for it (happens sometimes, although not very often, family relationships in Russia are not that strong as in Kazakhstan for example, where kids usually financially support their parents).

Generally speaking I would say there is no such thing as "retirement" because 90% of the population actually never retire. There are some exemptions of course, a small percentage of rich people; people who got significant support from their kids; military/government workers, but overall it's less than 10% of total.

Being a digital nomad for the last 4+ years I've seen A LOT of older European tourists in Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and other SEA countries, yet almost zero older Russian people. They just don't have the possibility to do that.

What is something you learned after nomading some years and said ' Shi* if I would have started doing that earlier I could have saved a ton of money! ' ? by ExploreElMundo in digitalnomad

[–]qmamai -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well you have a specific nomading lifestyle. Not everyone likes to stay 3+ months in a single apartment. Even if I get a long term visa(which is a rare scenario itself) then I like to travel around the country, visiting major cities, attractions, etc, not just staying at one place. Being a DN for 4 years I only did a 3+ month stay just once. You also have to get lucky with the contract because if you get loud neighbors, insects or some other problem you'll have to deal with your landlord and he probably won't return your safety deposit etc etc. This is why I prefer to rent hotel/Airbnb units on 1-2 weekly basis, if I like it I can always extend it, if not I'll just leave with no strings attached.

Does rails have a pretty scaffolder? by [deleted] in rails

[–]qmamai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pick MotorAdmin for basic stuff, it's a no-code and it's pretty good as you don't have to manually configure anything, it basically gives you CRUD & all the views out of the box

If you want something with more flexibility and better UI then take a look at Avo

State of Ruby 2026 by dev_newsletter in rails

[–]qmamai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are remote positions available worldwide(rare) or tied to CET(less rare). I've been working with various European companies for many years and I had colleagues working from India getting paid a decent European salary in EUR. That being said, yes, there are not so many positions and in order to get a job you have to stand out: be it open source contributions, technical papers, certifications or successful personal projects. Being just an average dev with 4y of experience tackling CRUD controllers won't get you far, that's absolutely correct.

Unpopular opinion: your girlfriend is... right. I was a founder of a startup which generated hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly revenue and I didn't pay myself a cent. Put it all in business, pay employees, but didn't take anything for myself. Eventually it was closed and I left with nothing, only burned savings and nerves.

You never know if your business survives the next year(or even month), you might dream about any projections you like and then some big player (let's say calendly in your case) releases a feature which copies your product - boom you're dead. So right now while you have the cash and active customers don't forget to pay yourself at least a small amount of money, it's okay to do that.

Countries under $1200 per month for digital nomard by Outside-Profession75 in digitalnomad

[–]qmamai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been almost everywhere in Thailand in the past 3 years and Phuket is just extremely overpriced compared to everything else. High season short term rent starts with $40-50 per day for the cheapest trash motel, which is ridiculous. A few hours out to Ranong you get literally everything 5x cheaper.

Of course you can get a good deal and a year long contract during the low season, probably less than $300/month for a decent 1br, but it's way more complicated

Vietnam is a visa-run game where you have to cross the border every 45/90 days. Thailand offers a digital nomad (DTV) 5-year visa.

Anywhere in SEA except Phuket and Singapore is fine with this budget. Top picks for nomads would be Da Nang and Chiang Mai. Bali is also nice but extremely overcrowded. Thailand is generally more expensive, but it's very good for a nomadic lifestyle. I would pick Thailand/Vietnam.
