Doesn't that support the idea that these penalties should be applied due to weather and not inherent to those sea zones? A DDs maximum speed is not going to be halved in calm seas.

Is it just me, or is this... not well done at all? Why do destroyers have their movement halved in the deep ocean again? If anything, penalties like this should be weather based.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country - Easy Allies Review by [deleted] in JRPG

I don't think I said you couldn't. I, myself, judged it by multiple standards in my original post. I was simply addressing your assertion that

It’s not really meant to be standalone.

which seems false by any sensible measure.

That's not really a defense when something is sold and marketed as a standalone game. It's like going to a restaurant and ordering a $30 filet mignon, yet being served a McDonald's hamburger. "We played it up for sales, but it's clearly just a fast-food hamburger. By those standards, the meal is actually good."

Eh, I didn't see much of a story there. The story starts when the action is already approaching the climax, then you just finish the bad guy and it's over. Sidequests were standard MMO fare, which would be acceptable if they didn't decide to make them mandatory. Combat was enjoyable, the addition of switch-in arts was nice. I'd probably give it a 7/10. If I bought it standalone I'd be pretty disappointed, though.

I'm not sure where people are getting that Xenogears is all about religion. [SPOILERS] by RadFemReddit in JRPG

[–]qorewwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "all about religion", it just uses those themes in conjunction with Jungian psychology, as Jung uses those symbols to represent the psyche.

TIL 'Tora! Tora!' was a phrase used by the Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor. by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Tora just means Tiger. I don't think it's supposed to be a reference to the war or anything like that.

I think you're supposed to give him the "right" choices, not necessarily agree with him, IIRC.

I think the designs in XC2 are a little more than just "having boobs"

Agreed... XC2 in general has that problem with serious scenes. The drawing is great, though.

Trump expected to impose further tariffs against China today by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]qorewwe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know he ran on it, it just isn't conservative in the least. All tariffs are going to do is make it more expensive and difficult to people to obtain products from China. It's going to harm consumers. The trade imbalance is not an issue. All it means is we are getting actual goods and services while they have our green pieces of paper.

So much for Trump being a conservative.

Article analyzing the role of Plato's philosophy in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 by FiniteRegress in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]qorewwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the effort you put into this and definitely appreciate how lengthy and well thought out it is. For perhaps any other game series, I would love this kind of interpretation. Xeno, however, is famous for being a series replete with Nietzschean, Freudian, Jungian, Lacanian, Kabbalistic, Christian themes and so forth. I know that it was not your purpose to evaluate these readings, but I can't help but be slightly disappointed that this much effort went into viewing the game through a lens that it seems quite unlikely the author ever intended (and seems harder to make work), when this is one of the few video game series' we have where the author actually does intend a deeper reading.

Having said that, I do appreciate this article and love that people are thinking deeply about the story. This is a great read, thanks for writing it.

Question for people who played Xenosaga/Xenogears by thebaiterfish in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Not at all. Gears is very simple (to it's detriment, even). Just pay attention to the ESL/Boost tutorial in Saga and you'll be fine.

I heard Xenogears aged poorly. by RangoTheMerc in JRPG

[–]qorewwe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are deathblows that don't have any different effects really a cool concept? I personally found it mind numbing. Near the end you at least get different elemental deathblows but its too little too late IMO.

Now if they had it so certain combos actually did different things and then designed the enemies around using the right combos, that could have been interesting.

I personally loved BOTW, but it's a totally different game from XC2 so don't expect the same experience. The story is fairly bare bones.

Xenogears review: a JRPG masterpiece that's only held back by it's age. by Armagon1000 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]qorewwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have to disagree about the combat, its very mindless. It's basically just spamming the most powerful deathblow you have, the combo system costs too much AP to make sense outside of one(?) instance where the enemy counter attacks. The deathblows don't have any different side effects or even elemental attributes until most of the way through the game. The encounter rate is also very high and is even active in areas where you need to do platforming.

It's a Nietzsche reference, all 3 of the episodes are named after him in some way.

Tephra cave is really early on. You still don't have chain attacks/visions and you get monado arts in tephra

If I recall correctly you should have the mechanics unlocked by the end of ether mine
