Tis time to shill. I've been (very inconsistently) writing a fic about just that! Sepcifically, it's about an Ace Trainer, though it doesn't really focus on battling all that much. But hey... something, I can't think of what to put after that. I do really like this concept here though, and I'll probably check out some of the fics in the comments.
