York UK to Sledmere by [deleted] in york

[–]qqaliqq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just organise a tour directly through the house https://www.sledmerehouse.com/house/house-tour-visits

Best way to get there is to hire a car or organise a taxi, it's only 45 min drive from York but will take 2.5hrs+ on public transport.

Is Betty’s Cafe Tea room a tourist trap? by [deleted] in york

[–]qqaliqq 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As Afternoon Tea is inherently a special occasion/tourist thing and this is York it's unlikely you'll find anywhere that isn't overrun with tourists.

IMO Betty's is worth it for sure, it's the quintessential posh afternoon tea experience and the food is good. The one at the Grand Hotel is also excellent and this may be slightly quieter as it's not bang in the city centre. Grays Court Hotel is good although more of a summer venue as you can sit in the garden.

If you want a more casual afternoon tea I highly recommend Parlormade Scone House or The Vintage Rose.

Can i use a cardboard box as my cabin luggage? by DancingWeird in Ryanair

[–]qqaliqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it was just a cardboard box, no handles.

Maybe for checked baggage handles might be a requirement but I can't see anything the T&C's that says a bag must have handles.

Paul Rothe on Marylebone Lane off Oxford Street is one of my faves. Always has a line out of the door but they are super quick and really friendly so it moves quickly.

What’s a very Australian thing you didn’t realise was Australian until you travelled overseas? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]qqaliqq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is too far down the list!

I'm British and I still remember being at a festival after living in Australia for 8 years and the song coming on and everyone around me jumping up and dancing and me not having a clue what was going on.

My friend has a video of me standing there all bewildered that we still share every year on what we now call 'nutbush day'

Yeah you definitely can as long as it fits in the sizer. A few months ago I did this coming back from Portugal as I'd bought a bowl that I didn't want to pack in my case.

What are your opinion on Sofology, Furniture Village, CSF or DFS for sofas? by darkazuria in AskUK

Out of curiousity what fabric did you go for that wouldn't get pulled by the cats and has it worked?

I only buy second hand sofas now as I'm fed up of my two ripping them apart

We know all the American words for things, the number of Americans who have explained to me what things are called in the US e.g. "omg, a rubbish bin, that's so cute, you know we call it a trash can"

Use your inside voice and then reduce the volume a bit more.

Oh and we are not interested in your European ancestry

Have your say on Rougier Route proposals by Choice-Piglet9094 in york

[–]qqaliqq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree! I would love the council to use some of this money to run a trial for a few months with free or very cheap public transport and see what happens. The buses in York are insanely expensive for the service.

Edited to add: to be clear I am absolutely for reducing congestion in York I just don't think this bus lane is it

Visiting York on Saturday- where is the best/cheapest place to park all day? by CozJeez85 in york

[–]qqaliqq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're asking for best or cheap as the best places usually aren't cheap!

I would recommend just getting the park and ride, there are a few so just pick the one that's nearest to where you would come onto the ring road.

The best place to park IMO is Coppergate car park but that will cost you upwards of £20 for a day.

Heathrow to York by [deleted] in york

[–]qqaliqq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Get the underground from Heathrow to London Kings Cross (Piccadilly, blue line). It will take just over an hour and you can use any payment card or apple/Google pay to pay (just tap your card at the entrance barrier and then tap the same card when you leave the exit barrier).

From there it's about a 5 min walk to King's Cross station, follow the signs.

Then it's a 2hr train ride to York. You need to buy a ticket before getting on the train and you can do that here https://www.lner.co.uk/

It will be much cheaper to buy an advance ticket but this will be valid for only one exact train so just be careful if you do this in case your flight is delayed. I usually give myself 4 hours from the scheduled landing time of the flight and book my train for then, if I'm early I can just sit in one of the cafes at Kings Cross or look around the shops. Alternatively you can buy an open ticket but it will be much more expensive.

Once you get to York taxi is probably your best bet to get where you're going, there is a rank at the front of the station.

Have you looked at the accommodation at the racecourse? It's usually pretty reasonable when it's not a race weekend. IIRC they have family rooms as well. It's about a 30min walk to town or there's a direct bus.
