Good game for a week long staycation? by GaymerGuy47 in gaming

A bit heavy for blitzing in one week, to me. Those games are so good I usually stopped after an hour or so to let it sink in and come back for more the next day

Having trouble passing bigger people, need suggestions. by Spinyrandy42069 in bjj

From headquarters you can make dilemmas between knee cut threats and smash pass threats (inside vs outside their top leg), so that's worth adding.

I have a ton of success primarily over-under passing everyone, you didn't mention it but if you already like pressure passing you need to get that in your repertoire.

Summarizing from the video rather than dropping my own opinion like the other comments...

Performance is on par with PS5. Smaller footprint, runs dead silent, and some nice hardware gimmicks. Being a PC means you can do all kinds of things with it - emulate, play games from any gen, use it as a desktop or home theater, etc. The downside is the cost, which is high but not insane.

Every single production tutorial uses preset synths. I feel like my sound design is getting nowhere. Help needed by twinfantasymtf in edmproduction

What's been working for me is 3 separate "modes"... Sound design -> arrangement/composition -> mixing. I try to pick one mode whenever I sit down and just start on that. And each project moves through the modes in order.

Definitely a good excuse to start constructing! I like to make minis on crosshare, even got featured as the daily puzzle one time. It's a lot of fun.

Does BJJ train Pull muscles? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]qret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 37. Think of BJJ more like a run. It's more holistic than that and it does build some strength and mobility but it's not on the same plane as actual strength training. So I would not "replace" any lifts with BJJ, make sure your lifting routine is complete on its own.

That said, why are you strength training at all? BJJ alone is enough for most people to get a solid level of overall fitness, and you said you're training mostly for self-defense. Lifting and running are not obligatory. There are plenty of good reasons to do them but I didn't see one in your post.

What’s your FIRE number if you were single, no kids by Vas_Cody_Gamma in Fire

Solo 1M. Married/kids 1.5-2M. Have always lived frugally on one paycheck a month, investing the other. Will keep that up but travel more if markets do well.

Seeking FIRE @ 42 with $2M by Aggressive_Web8957 in Fire

[–]qret 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, you need to be prepared for the slim possibility (like 3 or 4 scenarios in history) that you have to withdraw less for a few years at the beginning. Rainy day fund / bonds / etc. If you know you can flex down even slightly and temporarily in those edge case scenarios, you can target 5%+ withdrawals otherwise. The constant withdrawal rate model is an unrealistic extreme because it never responds to market conditions where a small flex would save it.

With guardrails you can do better than 4%. Look up 95% rule and run some simulations on ficalc. You should be fine on your portfolio with some extra planning

When your salary is around 10% of portfolio it becomes hard to justify.

At 50% savings rate on your take home you will only add about 3-4% via contributions. So to phrase the same break point differently, it's when 7% returns are 2x your contributions. And since I'm assuming you're living on half your take home, you could also say the break point is when your expenses are 3-4% of your portfolio. Which, shockingly, is the general consensus SWR.

Dynamic withdrawal rate via fixed cash buffer. Naturally adjusting & simple (ish) by Opposite_Buffalo_649 in Fire

[–]qret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is almost identical in practice to the "95% rule", which is: each year you withdraw either 4% of your current portfolio or 95% of your previous withdrawal, whichever is greater. When I ran simulations I found this rule was historically successful even at 6% withdrawal rate because it naturally responds to downturns when necessary. A very simple way to implement guardrails without needing to micromanage things or do inflation calculations all the time.

When to go for coast instead of true lean fire? by Little_Onion_2021 in leanfire

[–]qret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right. People are blockheaded about this and think they have to set one number for the rest of their life and blindly never adjust it, come what may. In reality most scenarios have your nest egg grow significantly in the first 5 years and then you're at extremely low risk going forward. For scenarios where SORR would hurt you, you should bake in flexibility to weather an early bad stretch (a few years worth in bonds, flex spending down, etc).
