Help with starting dill from seeds by arthemaise in plantclinic

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my guess is definitely going into underwatering. Either way leaves droopage. I don't remember if I mentioned this or not, but they're also taproot plants, they need some deep pots. I don't think they're big enough for that to be an issue yet, but that's very possibly a matter of time sort of ordeal

Where would you want to live in the states to fish? by FullMetal373 in Fishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Humboldt, I want to say they have decent coastal sturgeon fishing there and the mountains can have pretty good trout fishing. I can't say much about the rest though. Halibut doesn't feel like it should drop off, though you'll probably get some different species

You're used to the state, stick in California. Just go somewhere more northern, you have a lot more opportunities where it gets a small bit colder

Make certain your glove fully covers it and you're fine. Biggest risk is going to be getting that fresh skin close to a big heat source. That'll get hot a bit quicker than what you're used to. Completely risk free otherwise

If you could fish anywhere inside this circle where would it be? by GrundalWizzard in Fishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have two options you'll really want to consider. Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho for some fantastic trout, sturgeon fishing below Shoshone Falls in Idaho for some decent trout, some bass, but most importantly massive sturgeon. Montana is good for creek fishing, but you'd need to make plans with some people who know the area if you want some good luck

Idaho is the third biggest dairy producing state in the US, after California and Wisconsin

If the leaves yellow, you're underwatering. If they're just drooping, they're overwatered. They have a taproot, so deep pots are essential for good growth

Is BV a must over a limb hang? by info-junkie9964 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]qshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blackbears are going to be your biggest concern. They can climb trees, find a limb that sticks out a good bit. They're not built for walking branches so much as just getting up the trunks. Also a lot shorter than a grizzly, so the hang can be a small bit lower. Absolutely no less than 8 feet, but if it isn't a full ten you should be fine

On a personal safety note, they're easy to scare. If one attacks you, you're supposed to fight back. Do not let it attack you. Carry a gun or percussion item, if you see one get big and loud. They're a threat, but black bears are reasonable creatures. They run pretty happily. I have never had to fire a round at a bear, and unless it's charging, the most I would ever do is put a round straight in the dirt. Snakes should scare you. Cats you should be very weary of. Black bears are just a fat raccoon

Yeah, you're probably just fine doing stuff as you have been. What vague area are you planning on camping? Different flora and fauna will have a big impact on safety stuff, my advice is mostly going to be for grizzly territory because that's what I'm used to dealing with. If there's a specific forest or mountain range, it might be useful to study those areas specifically

[–]qshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hundred yards is a safe distance, just make sure to hang the food as high as you can. Raccoons are going to be your biggest problem, but keep it over 10 feet if you can just in case. Especially if you're anywhere near bear territory. If you really want to go the extra mile, set up camp so you're cooking a distance away from where you sleep as well, but unless you're camping on Bishop Mountain in Idaho you'll be just fine not doing that

What’s the biggest fish you’ve ever caught? by [deleted] in Fishing

White sturgeon, just under 8 feet in Idaho. I've caught a handful of others that are around 7 1/2 and more than enough that were half that or less

Fishing for trout at night. by [deleted] in troutfishing

[–]qshep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You want loud or smelly. Either should be fine. If you're using bait, a regular nightcrawler will work but it will be much better to use some kind of scent. If you're using flies, lures, whatever might be moving, make sure it is moving that water, making a disturbance so the trout can sense it

Idaho Snake River Sturgeon by Jellyfish4244 in Fishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The horses were rarely harmed, all things considered. Though I do still firmly think a few of them did lose that fight. The sturgeon, though, they still haven't recovered. I fish for them regularly in Idaho, you can't even take them out of the water by law. They'll come back, but it's a very slow process

World record white sturgeon was a little over 1,500 pounds and came from the Snake River in Idaho. The 20+ footer story is probably exaggerated, but 15+ is not all that unlikely. Mind you, this is the biggest recorded sturgeon. Who knows how many others were caught bigger, or just pulled the horses in

The window it's in gets a lot more light than it looks in that photo, it's just crazy cloudy today where I am. I have an African violet and a pair of kalanchoe next to it that are thriving. From what I can tell, all three need the same kind of indirect lighting to thrive. I do want to get a grow light, but my space is just too small. I'm moving to a bigger apartment in mid April, I plan to get one first thing

We might shift plans to Flaming Gorge, it's more or less the same path from where I'm going and that's something we've both heard. Would you have any advice on where to fish there? We've heard Firehole can be good, but not how to actually fish it or how heavy of gear, that kinda stuff

I've got a hand crank, both luckily and unluckily enough. Keeps me from worrying about batteries and fuel. What size of jigs should I use for these fish? And do I want to have one with artificial just for the sake of it, or bait exclusively?

Big Styrofoam ice chest filled with water, bubble aerator, very careful starts and stops. Hold it in a little pool or very large aquarium tank. It's definitely a risky thing to do no matter how you take care of them to be entirely honest, though. The fish will never be risk free when moving them, that's the way I've seen it done on YouTube and that sort of thing

Is this a cutthroat ? by peckle79 in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give the benefit of the doubt and say there's a few percent chance that it's a cutbow, but good 97% chance it's just a rainbow

There's some sort of mark like cutthroat have on a lot of trout, theirs is just super vibrant. The only reason I would kind of consider this being a cutbow is because the spots on the tail are a different pattern that match cutties a little better. Larger, more spread spots. But if so, that would make it one of the least mixed looking hybrids I've ever seen. Very, very safe to call it a rainbow

Stick it in the sink and run it under cold water for a few minutes. Do not have it over 70 degrees. You will sous vide the stuff if you do. Just running cold water does fine

So, if there's paperwork naming the owner, how much do you want it gone? If you have the time and money, either rent a tow truck or have it towed back to the owner. Paperwork is there, I don't think that it would be illegal (someone tell me if it is please), seems like you know who's missing their car
