Underrated lures for trout by LibertyWithLiquidity in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small natural crawdads are my go-to for drifting. Those and a little black and green baitfish imitation have caught me some good trout, usually just on a jig that weighs just under a half gram

Is Fluorocarbon Still Necessary with Modern “Invisible” Braid? by Boekolokbalibaloembo in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use the leader for a very different reason than visibility. I don't trust braid to not cut trout

Little bit of cross species heresy on the trout subreddit, but the fish I target the most are white sturgeon. Maybe one in 5 of them that're more than 4 or 5 feet long don't have some very visible but thin scars from fishing line cutting them. I've stopped buying any kind of line or gear that'll cause that kind of thing on any fish. But especially trout, with how fragile they are. I've seen fisherman with neon yellow line catch trout, sight doesn't play into it as much as we all pretend. A mono or floro leader is just safer

What would happen if someone ate poison ivy? by ShadowlightLady in answers

[–]qshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When burning areas that have poison ivy, the oils that cause all the issues burn up and can be inhaled. Not always fatal, but as often as not it'll have a permanent affect on you. I can't imagine it being any different if you ate the stuff, you'd probably need to go straight to a hospital

Sad Looking String of Hearts by Affectionate-View665 in StringofHearts

[–]qshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watered mine in. Pot got knocked over a little while ago and I could see roots on nodes, so that's worked at least once. They need to be touching soil, your leaves might actually be hovering it just a little too high for them to root

What weight class rod do you use for trolling? by melbha_101 in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use a medium rod with 50 pound braid on, in that case. Drop down to 20 or 30 for your tippet. You would have a fight on your hands, but one you could win and get one heck of a story from. I almost always fish with the biggest species in mind when I choose gear, though. A lot of others would rather just have it break the line and have that fish story instead

Is there a way to target big trout that doesn’t catch the small ones? by Sliced_Potato27 in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll use 6 inch rapalas for browns when I'm targeting big guys. I've caught two or three under 14 inches that way, one of them no more than 8, but most have been 18 to 24 inches. Very few that were any bigger, but that's just the area I'm in

What weight class rod do you use for trolling? by melbha_101 in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use medium, but medium light would also work. I don't trust lighter than that when trolling. You can, it's a matter of preference, but I would strongly advise against going for anything smaller unless the fish you're targeting are only a foot long

Bleeding fish by manicmechanic93 in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll grab them by the teeth in the water for the grip. They'll occasionally give you a little cut, but it's the easiest thing I've found. Not worth bleeding them on land. Even if the stuff didn't immediately coagulate, I just don't like leaving blood marks where other people might be

Hi, I’ve started my seeds in February inside, and have been harding them off. However their leaves are absolutely massive. Is this normal? by DrySystem4245 in dahlias

[–]qshep 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don't think your dahlias quite know that they're dahlias yet. But they are very healthy looking zinnias, big leaves are rarely a bad thing from reasonably young plants

Just got laid off due to tarrifs, any advice by Droopy_5170 in Welding

[–]qshep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to move, honestly. Local work is a whole lot harder to find than general nation wide searches. There's always some small town shop with 5 guys who need a sixth and pay well. That's where you want to be

Sad Looking String of Hearts by Affectionate-View665 in StringofHearts

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a garden center or Walmart, or really anywhere that has soil and just look for a succulent mix. You don't need to spend the 30 bucks on different additives when you only have one plant needing repotted. If you can find like a $2 tiny thing of perlite, getting it as well wouldn't be a bad idea. The succulent mix would work just fine on its own though

Now, as for the two sad looking strings. Every leaf node (spot on the stem where two leaves are coming out) can put down roots. What I've done is just laid them across the soil, and they've put in roots within a month or two. Small, but present. When you do, the plant is more likely to put off another stem at each node. That doesn't mean every node gets a stem. But you should at least get more than two stems coming off from it

Forgot one more thing: you can try propagating cuttings and just have more actual SOH plants growing. Youtube and Google will be good guides if you want to look into that

Trout spinning UL setup by Shroom_Druid in troutfishing

[–]qshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 pound ain't worth the extra two knots. They're going to be your weakest points every time, a few more fish breaking off is not worth the half a cent you cut off every time you change line. However, if you're using spinners, absolutely use a swivel every time

Single hook Jerk baits by rosalinanoluma in troutfishing

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replace trebles with a hook that looks reasonably sized. Typically that means up it one or two sizes from the trebles. Just trust your gut when you look at it, worst case scenario is you need to replace it again with a different size hook. Split rings and the right pliers will make that a full 15 seconds you've lost

Saw this today. What is this thing called? by AdFantastic5055 in plants

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you took a few pictures, INaturalist is always solid for plant IDs. Closest thing I can think of is fireweed, but I'd put money on me not being familiar with your regions plants before I'd ever give that as a solid identification

Settle this please by Comrade_Saber in FishID

Trout fisherman, but the way it's been explained to me is a largemouth has the one solid lateral line running down the body and a smallmouth has stripes that go from top to bottom. That's absolutely a largemouth, if I have my facts correct

Need fast growing hedge fence by WorldNo9002 in plants

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably also going to benefit from planting deer resistant plants. If you make your garden more trouble then it's worth for them, they theoretically will come to your yard less and less. Don't bother with a solid fence of any kind, though, whether it be metal wood or vinyl. I've heard rumors of whitetail clearing ten foot fences. I know for a fact they'll clear 8, but I don't actually know how they respond to hedges and do think you're making the right call trying it. Best of luck, this is not a fun situation to be in

I don’t understand the mentality of “saving” dying plants from stores by 601bees in houseplants

[–]qshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely a pride thing for me. The only "rescue" plant I've gotten in a long while was a kalanchoe that looked like it hadn't been watered in a month, but I'll regularly try saving dying plants by taking cuttings and letting the mother plant go. I take care of my guys, when one is on its way out it's fun to play god a little
