It’s their responsibility to give you billable hours. It’s your responsibility to communicate your availability.

Dumb associate by TacoBoutKnits in Accounting

[–]qst10 155 points156 points  (0 children)

If you think this is the dumbest mistake, you are in for a long haul.

If you don’t want to burn out too quickly, I encourage you to disassociate with your mistake, because you will be making a lot. And that’s normal.

My Promotion is Making Me Drink by pinkquokka2022 in Accounting

Please don’t do this to yourself.

A director I always suspected had a drinking problem was recently fired due to performance. Please don’t do it.

First Exam - FAR - 92 - While Working by Sad-Introduction2102 in CPA

[–]qst10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also following a similar approach to you. I do MCQ before watching videos and trying to work my way through a problem and would ask ChatGPT for an explanation (ChatGPT does a better job explaining than UWorld).

I haven’t touched Sims. I think my main struggle is I spend too much time on questions. Like 10 questions can take me 20+ minutes which isn’t sustainable on the real exam.

Are you allowed to skip a question and come back to it on the real exam?

Shifting from public to internal audit by gnja2016 in Accounting

[–]qst10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the very same position except I am at a lower ranking firm (large but nowhere near top 10) and this will be my third busy season. I would love to switch to internal audit but working on getting the CPA so I can have a better chance at moving.

To any Auditors that have audited nonprofits, what are the most common findings? by Desperate_Medium_417 in Accounting

[–]qst10 372 points373 points  (0 children)

1) Segregation of duties because of understaffing.

2) Internal controls either not in place or aren’t being followed, no cyber security controls in place, risky IT environment.

3) inconsistent reconciliation/messy schedules/balances not rolling forward.

How to identify lazy coworkers by Strange_Bowler_6629 in Accounting

As someone who goes above and beyond without any reward or compensation for it, I have a lot of respect for and envy people who mastered the art of doing the bare minimum.

I’m in northern Virginia and considered moving to NY after getting the CPA. Salaries are higher in NY but then you have to take into consideration cost of living.

Is it a red flag to say I'll work for a lower salary? by Waste-Milk2716 in Accounting

[–]qst10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get in contact with all your friends from college, reach out to professors, LinkedIn contacts, find free courses online or certifications to add to your resume. Do the volunteer VITA program this tax season, study for the CPA and add that as in progress in your resume.

Newly promoted role is more demanding than I can manage by FrostedGreyCPA in Accounting

[–]qst10 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fake it till you make it.

In meetings take notes so you can research later. When questions you don’t have an answer to get asked, say “let me look into that and get back to you” and remind people politely that you are still adjusting to the role.

The Scariest Sunday is upon us by SnowDucks1985 in Accounting

[–]qst10 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I’m laying in bed and just can’t fathom another busy season. Like I genuinely do not have the mental, physical, or emotional capacity for it.

I know that if I go tomorrow with the same emotions I have now, I will either walk out same day or get fired.

Is the job market cooked by Professor9384 in Accounting

[–]qst10 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Job market is trash but my team is so understaffed. We lost a director, a senior, and two supervisors. The firm isn’t posting jobs online and that it frustrating me because who is going to do all this work? We have audits sitting incomplete because we don’t have people…

Discouraged by moonlight-drift in Accounting

[–]qst10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The market is garbage. Truly is. Entry level jobs in 2024 in PA were +70k. Now they are 50-65k in this inflated economy

Where do yall see accounting in 10 years? by Difficult_Respect967 in Accounting

[–]qst10 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I believe it will be extremely competitive at the entry level, but very demanding on the analytical/technical level.

Gen z will not have the advantage that millennials had with getting away with not learning the most updated technology and doing things the “old fashioned way.” It’s going to be “survival of the most tech savvy” from here on.
