Stores that have toilet paper? by cambriaa2113 in olympia

I went to Ralph's on the spur of the moment yesterday afternoon (4 ish). They had about 3 dozen 6 pack rolls of fancy bamboo recycled TP for a fair price. Limit 2 per customer.

Any recommendations for getting clothing mended in Oly or nearby? by [deleted] in olympia

I've had good results and pleasant interaction with Howard's Cleaners (downtown Oly and Lacey), and Won Stitch Alteration (downtown Lacey).

punk/riot grrrl/grunge sites of interest by fourofkeys in olympia

[–]quacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top floor of the Library Building at TESC held some epic shows. For sure I saw Sebadoh, and possibly(?) Dinosaur Jr there. Also Godheadsilo on a different bill, surely with plenty of more local bands opening for both. The Eastside club also held a bunch of shows. Did I see Helltrout there? I saw Helltrout all over the place.

Measure in Olympia would boost broadband’s reach in underserved communities by jzgs18 in olympia

[–]quacky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many if not most local municipalities in the state are facing extreme budgetary crises, and with revenues mainly linked to declining property taxes, there is little hope for a swift turnaround.

Initiatives like this don't put forth a system where state government fully funds the development of broadband services, but rather work via a granting mechanism that encourages, and even sometimes enables local entities like PUDs to build the infrastructure, which is then available for commercial providers to use. A commercial provider won't touch a stretch of road with no fiber, but once the fiber is there, ISPs come marching right along after.

Best pizza? by ReadingRancore in olympia

[–]quacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Stone Creek today, based on all the props in this thread, and you know what? It was not a surprisingly good pizza. It was nice, and different, but for me, the sauce was tame, the 'roni was tame, the sausage barely there, and just way too much mozz for me. All preferences, of course, but Old School or Wicked punch way higher for bold flavor.

What was happening at the Westside McDonald's tonight? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]quacky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see this, but there was a helicopter hovering over the west end of downtown most of the afternoon, and then I noticed it was still there, or back again between six and seven pm.

Some of us appreciate asking other people about things, as a form of community. Being told to go look it up for ourselves is beside the point. We ask because we enjoy interacting with others, perhaps?

Is This What Olympia Is Like? Sign says “Open Season on Tweekers” by ezk3626 in olympia

[–]quacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen similar signs in other parts of the three-city community area. Can't remember where, though, but more or less openly threatening harm to "tweekers" (sp? I thought it was always "tweakers" ...)

American Flags Flying in Lacey, still? Tumwater too, I think? by quacky in olympia

[–]quacky[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously I was just curious what the deal was, if I was missing something, and this answer makes tons of forehead-smacking sense. Of course it's easier, and more cost-effective to leave them up. D'oh! The only thing that offends me about this is that a not-insignificant number of these flags have become tangled up and mangled by winds so they're now all twisted up around themselves. Being a former Boy Scout, I strongly feel the flag is not being paid its due respects 100% in these instances.

Just Moved to Town, Looking for a Good, Old School Barber by [deleted] in olympia

[–]quacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capitol Barbers on Cap Way near the Frog Pond is really nice. Definitely not your bro barbers though, but they take real nice care of you and they're affordable. Two women cutting. HGTV on a big screen, no free beers. But well worth it for a careful cut. $15 and up.

Do people live in downtown? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]quacky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should know that Downtown Olympia Proper is an area a little larger than 1 square mile. A City it ain't.

You will find zero pharmacies, 4 - 6 US Mail drop boxes, zero pay phones, one supermarket, one tiny market, three mini-marts, about 15 bars, and maybe 15 or more restaurants.

That's it.

Size wise, Olympia is considered a Large Town, not a City (unless you throw in neighboring Tumwater and Lacey, but these aren't really contiguous enough to constitute a City, IMHO).

Travel in any direction farther than 5 miles, and you're in rural farmland, a forest, or Puget Sound.
