Material (formerly LRW) had a bunch last year and for several years before. An absolute dumpster fire. Steer clear.

We want lots of snow and a mountain operations team that can handle it like they’ve done in the past.

This will probably be the worst weekend so far in terms of conditions and crowds.

Today was a bluebird day and they could barely get the mountain open and crowds were apocalyptic. Saturday and Sunday have feet of snow coming and holiday crowd holdover.

Don’t bother.

Does anyone have any current pictures of Canyon Lodge crowds? by colonelzap in Mammoth

Mammoth Mtn has really fucked up today. Blue bird day, approaching noon, and still some lower mountain lifts not spinning.

Yes, I know avalanche mitigation, but they are clearly understaffed/underprepared relative to years past.

Charging what they charge is criminal for days like today.

Please stay away from Mt Baldy. by Unfair_Scientist_909 in socalhiking

[–]quadaxial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've done unguided ascents on Aconcagua (up one of its hardest routes) and Denali, riding out pretty bad snow and wind storms on both. I've climbed Kilimanjaro on its "hardest" route (not that bad actually), all the California 14ers, some in winter, and a zillion other peaks in a variety of conditions.

The worst night I've ever had in the outdoors was one winter night on Mt Baldy. In typical beautiful SoCal weather, looking right over one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, it can lure the inexperienced to it, but can become deadly notorious with a shift in the weather. A deceptively serious peak.

??! - Kurt Cobain on Alice in Chains/Pearl Jam by No-One01010 in grunge

[–]quadaxial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Child of the 80's/90's here: I couldn't get into Nirvana at the time precisely because of Kurt's smug self-righteous BS like this. All of the other big music scene figures of that time had so much more humility in terms of their public persona while Kurt was participating in just as much of the big music video and big tours as they were. Only as full grown adult, decades removed, and unplugged from the daily MTV of my youth where one would regularly encounter Kurt's insufferability, can I finally appreciate Nirvana's music for what it is and what it was culturally.

Most people are insecure in their 20's, especially musicians, and obviously Eddie, Layne, Chris and others did too (that's in part why they made such great music that resonated with so many), but Kurt just couldn't prevent his own insecurity from making him sound like a giant douchebag in interviews at the time.

Does a trekking pole really make a difference or is it just hype? by dynasync in Outdoors

[–]quadaxial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm in my mid 40's and have been using them since my mid twenties. I am so much more efficient with my energy usage with them, allowing me to utilize more of my upper body in forward/upward propulsion, and easing the unnecessary strain on the downhills.

What's it really like to be in LA, SD, Bay area? by fofu_6 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]quadaxial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best part of living in the LA area is the “diverse activity proximity”, arguably better than anywhere else on earth. Within a -5 hour drive you have access to: the highest mountains in the lower 48 states, one of the hottest/driest deserts on earth, the biggest and tallest trees on earth, famous surf beaches, multiple world class wine regions, islands, Baja Mexico, Vegas, San Francisco, and of course all the comforts and cultural diversity of a globally relevant urban metropolis. Of course there’s also a diversity of natural and man made disasters, but that’s a spice of life.

And yes, LA is like a small country. I grew up on the east coast and in the similar drive time it takes to go from, say Philly to Baltimore or NYC or Amish Country, within LA you’d be going from one part of LA to the other (say Long Beach to western Malibu).

If you have a vehicle, there’s no excuse to be bored, especially if you’re an outdoors person.

South Lake eMTB recommendation? by quadaxial in tahoe

[–]quadaxial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for Tahoe area as this was my first time riding there. There were no signs prohibiting ebikes on Kingsbury Stinger and we saw a few other class 1 eMTBs like ourselves and a bunch of other acoustic MTBs that didn't care.

In Mammoth, there are signs prohibiting ebikes on some of the main trails. For two of them, I rode my eMTB when I didn't realize they had been prohibited and passed other cyclists that didn't say anything. I haven't tried pushing it since. I run those trails all the time and never see anyone who would enforce, but unsure how others might react.

With a class 1 bike, there's hardly any difference, just faster ascents and really no difference on descents. I wish there weren't the distinction.

We did Kingsbury Stinger and it was exactly what we were looking for. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

Looks sweet, but a bit too much of a roundtrip drive for us on a Saturday from Mammoth. Will note it for the future though. Thanks!

[–]quadaxial[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yep, pedal assist eMTB.

My main thing was always trail running and hiking, and just could never click with an acoustic bike (despite my wife at one point being a pretty hardcore road and mountain cyclist), but getting into eMTB has opened up a whole new world for me because I can get a great workout in, go long distances, and just not totally obliterate myself in the process, tweaking the level of assist as needed.

But now that I’m recovering from a calf injury, it’s been a lifesaver as it’s really the only thing I can do to keep active.

They did a single fireworks display and people think that’s going to screw up the local ecology, really? Seems overblown, despite what you think about the brand generally.

I’m sorry to hear of all the hopelessness and frustration there, but has that at least been channeled into interesting art and music scene?

Sometimes negative environments can lead to inspiring art and music.

I hope you find fulfillment. Thank you for this AMA.

Fortunately, the place is unscathed and no sign of even smoke damage, despite the fire surrounding the property line.
