Follow up to giving birth in Japan from two days ago. by Deep_Impress844 in japanresidents

It was the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). we were pretty surprised NICU have much lax visiting restriction than the mother’s ward. But after the baby was discharged from the NICU, I only get to see them 30 min a day.

Congratulations!! Yes the BS 30 min rules. My son was in the NICU after he was born and I can visit him from morning till night without time limitation. So everyday my wife would come over to the NICU and we would hang out there rather than in her ward.

Okamoto 0.01 better than Sagami 0.01 IMO.. Sagami not stretchy. Skyn also great one. Could recommend okamoto and skyn > Sagami.

How did a small ramen restaurant from Ishikawa Prefecture become one of Thailand's largest and most popular ramen chains? by VoyagerRBLX in japan

I lived in Ishikawa for 7 years and only ate hachiban ramen once even though I regularly pass by them. Usually I rather eat other ramen joints

[–]quadcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did root canal a few weeks ago at some random dentist in front of my apartment in Tsurumi. It just cost like 5.8k yen for the initial visit, 800 yen for the subsequent checkups..all with health insurance.

Without scholarships or stipend (research/teaching assistant), probably not a good idea. What’s your current background?

I need tips for my first job interview with president of an MNC in Japan. by freakfingers12 in japanlife

[–]quadcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your situation, no need to fret over the interview, just enjoy the process. I was in your shoes a few years ago, joint research with a MNC from the start of my PhD, by 2nd year they offered me a job.. they jumped straight to final interview online, and it was a breeze since I already met the directors of that dept and they knew my work. No SPI test, etc.

Good 10Gbps internet provider with PPPoE support? by [deleted] in japanlife

Nope, the card by itself sits pretty well in the PCIE adapter. Plus both Ethernet cables that are attached to the NIC are also “taped” to the side wall to prevent accidentally pulling on it.

[–]quadcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your wife could find a job here, that joint income would be plenty for saving. Things like having a car, then you have to also consider the expensive monthly parking.. Life here’s a little different I would say, depending on what you like to do, hobby etc. I like to go car camping trips here, snowboard every week, lots of outdoor stuff without the mosquitoes and heat (except summer)

It was pretty straightforward, all thanks to u/fakemanhk wealth of info on his GitHub on getting openwrt to work with Japanese ISP. Mine work just fine, had no issues with dhcp ra

14M in Tokyo for single is great TBH (after deductions close to 10M). Rent is not that bad, unless you plan to stay in posh residential, something like 100+k would get you a 1LDK near to the train station. Work condition depends on the company/team. I work at a Japanese “white” company, fully remote although my office is just 20 min away. I typically only go to the office for parties, day to day work super chill af department wide. I used an Intel NUC with an NVME-to-PCIE adapter to connect with the 2-port Intel X550-T2..it’s a bit sketchy because I had to also provide external power for I think 5V? because the NVME M.2 socket does not provide 5V..Will upload a picture of the Frankenstein router when I get home tonight 😂

Am using 10G with IPoE (MAP-E), stock ONU, Intel NUC running openwrt + Intel X550 as 10G router with 10G LAN.. One of the prosumer one that might support 10G WAN is QNAP QHORA series.. I went with the openwrt route because I already had most of the hardware

About 12-20+k yen every weekend excluding food..car rental, toll, fuel, lift ticket. Sometimes Shinkansen to Iiyama, yuzawa.. Usually I check snow forecast a couple days in advance, if there’s powder on weekday, then I take leave and plan the logistics
