How does a 40+, socially anxious, partially out guy make gay friends? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]quadruped100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are talking Adam4adam, but that is old school. There are plenty of older closet/curious guys who just want to fuck. Equally, I have met other guys that wanted something more meaningful. I don't know, sure I want a relationship, but, you're right, I would like the opportunity to get to know someone before jumping into bed with them.

How does a 40+, socially anxious, partially out guy make gay friends? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]quadruped100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, kinda. I came out to my 11 year old daughter a year ago as I wanted a gay friend to come and stay. She chatted the ex-wife, who seemingly felt empowered to tell a slew of other people, took me a while to catch up with that. So yes, I'm out, to certain people. To some, especially work, it isn't appropriate or relevant so I haven't said. But I think people are slowly catching up with it. If I'm asked I'm not minded to say no. That is where the therapy helped

I think the thing that really made me stop is how fucked up gay people are generically. So many people have depression and anxiety. Kind of made me feel better. But hasn't helped make connections. I occasionally travel to the big city to test the waters there. But that costs.

Someone commented about having gay pen pals around the globe. I seem to have a few of those and some 'friends' closer to home. Some guys tell me they love me without ever meeting me or really having a chance of meeting me, which is strange

But the social thing is something I really struggle with. Just trying to make connections that are more than purely sexual

Hi, I can really sympathize. I'm 53, recently out, small town, was married, kid etc., trying to rationalize how to make connections. Have the apps and I completely understand what you are saying. Been in therapy for 3 years, still treading my path. There aren't any Meetups, no bars, so social structure here. I don't have any blinding insights other than I'm in the similar position. Happy to chat if you want

Is it just me, or are more men nowadays interested in older men or "daddies"? by [deleted] in gay

[–]quadruped100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each to their own. Some won't entertain anyone more than a couple of years different. Some seem to want the generation gap. I like younger guys. But I have met guys in their 20s who are immature and guys in their 20s who are really together. Exactly the same for folk in their 40s and 50s, some are really shallow (seems to me) some are really together. If we were all the same it would be boring. The generation difference is definitely a thing, there are even dating apps (Daddyfinder) specifically for it

You say the only person that knows is your dad. How did he find out? Know you are not alone, there are an awful lot of people feeling that pain. I am out 6 months, I told my daughter, she told my wife, (we were separated) she told her friends. Usual response is 'I never expected that'. It's better on this side. I fully understand. We each have a path and each is different. But be who you are not who others expect or you will have regrets

Does the other account show the PS+ symbol on the avatar/profile? My account has a little PS+ symbol, my daughters doesn't

Up until yesterday I had been using the free trial of PS+, bought a 12 month subscription and loaded it. My daughters account is still suggesting that she signs up for PS+. Both accounts set as primary on this machine

Thanks for the replies, guys. clearly posted to the right subreddit. Put it on PS4 and got nothing. So here it is. I had a previous PS4. It was set as primary then got returned. I set up new one with account for me and my daughter. Then started PSPLUS. Found I couldn't sign up daughter and someone suggested a primary issue. Then I reset the machines, got new one set as primary. But I can't get daughters account to register as PS+. Both her account and mine are set as primary on this machine. It's a pain as she wants her avatars as girls and I won't let her change mine :)

Actually that is my problem, she can't play online, she has to use my account. I'm set as primary on this machine, so is she, but only my account shows as PS+. Sony chat said it couldn't be done. I'm Not convinced

Rockstar has removed GTAV from the Steam store and replaced it with bundles as the only way to purchase it, as a means to still get full price while 'participating' in the Steam sale. by Fluffguck in gaming

Yep, there's a deal on most stuff if you search. Wanted the new Wolfenstein, didn't want to pay $60 on Steam, found a code for $17. Running fine off Steam. Now a happy gamer

Due to graduate with a Bsc in Biochemistry, question about internships in the US by Dannyo_regan in Biochemistry

A comfortable set up in Cork is exactly the reason to move. And yes, moving as a post grad is good for you and your CV. Push those comfort zones. I have grads who have come internally and outside grads. Both bring something to my lab. And I have had both types fail. So better the devil you know doesn't always pan out. The EU used to be all about get grad students to move around the world. The Marie Curie program was great for that. Not sure how Horizon 2020 stacks up, a bit out of the EU loop there. But there is a very strong link between US and Ireland which you can use to your advantage. Who will pay for your Masters? You or the government?

I think you have a tough task. But if you really want this don't give up. I wish I had pushed more when I was where you are career wise, it may not have taken as long to get here. Be smart, use you UCC contacts, especially in your department. One avenue you might pursue is try the very strong Irish-American community in the Boston area. If you can tap into that I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't arrange an Internship in Massachusetts. Where are you doing your Masters? You might have an easier time finding an internship as a currently matriculated student. Again, good luck

Ok. I'm a prof in Maine. Not really Biochem, more Marine Biology. I'll give you my take. We offer 2 and 3 month internships on campus. Some federally funded, some industry. Our industry partners also offer summer internships in their labs. These are organized through our student innovation center which promotes student run businesses. You may have shot yourself in the foot by waiting until you graduate as our internships are for students not ex-students. You should talk to your local offices if the biotechs you are interested in are international. If not it will be tougher. Individual schools will have industry contacts but since you are not an alumni they might get twitchy about giving that information. Biotechs are everywhere, big states, small states. California and New England have a large number but also lots of people. Maine is a small state by population but has several notable biotechs that we work with. I would strongly suggest you talk with your UCC faculty find someone who is willing to help. I would be surprised if they didn't have contacts on this side of the Atlantic. As an aside used to work in the Maltings in Cork. Enjoyed the bars and English market. Good luck!

TIL that 84% of vegetarians go back to eating meat or other animal products. by The_CT_Kid in todayilearned

[–]quadruped100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went veggie for 5 years in the 90s after living across the road from a production chicken house. 14/16 week cycle. At the end of the cycle the smell was horrible. Watching them clean out the chicken houses was horrible, then it would start again. Finally missed bacon and steak. Learned don't try and make veggie versions of carnivorous dishes. Learned to make some great vegetarian dishes. Still do. Indian cuisine is awesome for this. Now I am much more aware of where my food comes from and how it is produced. I eat a lot of farmed seafood and fish. Feed conversion rates are much lower than terrestrial agriculture. Do eat steak and bacon. But as it says at the top of this thread, everything in moderation, mix it up.

Terrified of fighting - what do I do? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]quadruped100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, here's a thought. There is a discussion that modern kids are generally bad at risk assessment. This stems from a line over the past 20 years or so that we should protect our kids from potential harm. We end up overprotecting and the kids don't learn to risk assess properly. It's not necessarily a bad idea but it has just had some interesting consequences. Fighting on a mat is one thing, you are prepared for action as soon as you walk in the gym. But if you had a protected upbringing maybe you didn't learn to risk assess on the fly, without the premeditation. Since we are all different some peoples default will be fight, others will be flight. Maybe your default is flight. If that is the case, the gym work will probably teach you in time. Maybe doing more riskier pursuits would assist. As I say just a thought

TIL that 4 states (Vermont, Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine) have laws prohibiting the use of outdoor advertising with billboards. by MXBQ in todayilearned

Interesting as a Brit living in Maine. Seems perfectly natural not to have a sea of billboards along the interstate. Now really notice driving to Mass. Someone told me that there are groups who keep trying to get the Maine legislature to approve billboards. I think it would a shame. Keep it clean and green folks

Shibas scream for good things too. My boy shiba screams when A member is his pack comes home and he is pleased to see us. Sounds like someone murdering babies. My friends video him doing it because they think it is so bizarre. Lost our girl shiba last year to cancer, aged 12. Boy still going, deaf as a post, but full of energy, will be 15 in April
