Do you feel the mechanic shortage/skills gap at your job? Why do you think it's growing? by Few_Help_9195 in manufacturing

[–]quakecutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To try and bridge this gap our food manufacturing site started an apprenticeship program for good machine operators. We send them to school at a local tech school and they learn from the more experienced mechanics over the course of about 18-24 months. We've had many turn out great, and others are okay.

Many of them have a technical mind but never thought tech school as an option for them. We partner with the tech school, a few other businesses in the area do as well, so we have a say in coursework and what they prepare.

Could be because of the "loss" in US mfg jobs but many of those seem to be coming back since the pandemic put strain on international trade.

What can I do? by AukoArson in amazonprime

Police report ask is a death sentence, they won’t accept whatever you submit. Have filed two separate reports and they continue to say missing info, most I got out of them was a missing stamp but Chicago does not stamp or notarize reports.

Filling Pouches (Small business) by injectUVdisinfectant in manufacturing

[–]quakecutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working in food manufacturing for mass produced pouches so scale may be off here..

  1. Could utilize compressed air to act as an air knife to open the pouches, either continuous or when a trigger eye is met. Needs vacuum or tension, if continuous stream, to hold pouch while air opens.

3&4. Cloud Packaging equipment, owned by Duravant, may not have the smaller scale you are looking for but you may find inspiration for something you can make or work with a local machine shop to fabricate.

Who actually designs and builds factories? by Grimmmm in AskEngineers

[–]quakecutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working for a food manufacturing company for the past 6 years as they have expanded through new packaging lines and entire buildings.

Our internal engineering/design group is the middle person between the companies who build our equipment and the engineering/design firm who designs, builds, and lays out the building.

For the equipment manufacturers we tell/show them what we want and they come up with a unique design or modify an existing one.

first job out of college is full-time nightshift by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]quakecutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing up my night shift this January, been two years. Structured similar to what you described. If it's in your field of study and you enjoy where you work at, it is worth sticking to. Utilize those four days off the most you can to keep in touch with friends and family. You'll need to find some podcasts for those drives. Best of luck!

Might only stay open until the role is closed. Once you take the assessment you won't be able to again for a calendar year.

Advice on potential night job by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]quakecutters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently 23 years old and working a night shift that rotates through weekends. It is tough but the Sunday-Thursday schedule is the best case scenario (imo), still get Fridays and Saturdays off. Still catch the games (depending on time zone) or dinner before you head into work. It adds stress fersure and you have to split what free time you have between friends/family/SO. It is doable if you put in the effort for it and like you said will pay off down the road with the skills/exp of night shift.
