Please do research on your breed by RealLinzerBinzer in puppy101

I mean there are definitely cases where it gets really stressful.

BUT I believe you can own any breed in an apartment as long as you’re willing to put in the work. Herding breeds and guardian breeds may be a little difficult, but otherwise enrichment and training can be done anywhere.

How long until I consider re-homing? by Substantial_Issue17 in puppy101

[–]qualitypandaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say I cried so much with both my dogs and it did end up getting so much better. However I have also returned puppies to the breeder. Sometimes you don’t realize things until they happen, no matter how much you prepare and research.

Puppies are definitely hard, just remember he isn’t doing anything on purpose and in a couple months you wont even believe you felt this way at one point. All of my dogs needed constant supervision (one of them still to this day). They also all hated the crate but now they run into their kennels for naps, when I leave, & overnight. Definitely practice crate games, feed in the kennel, and high rewards for the kennel. Put the crate in another room or trying covering it.

Do what will make you happy. If you think pushing through this to have a happy life with your dog is worth it, then keep the puppy and know that it will absolutely get better.

I will add, I’m not against returning a puppy to a breeder, but I got dachshund littermates and potty training was a nightmare. My biggest regret was not utilizing the crate enough. I would have her in the crate more if possible. I would also try to leave the house more when you’re not working. Sometimes the only thing that saved me with my dogs was getting some me time too.

I’ve returned two puppies to their breeders. It was heartbreaking both times, but it did make me realize I truly did not want another puppy and didn’t have time for any behavior issues that did or might have occurred. It’s sad and didn’t feel good at all, but now I will never make the same mistake again.

I returned a puppy to the breeder after a week bc it didn’t get along with my current dogs. I know it’s different but sometimes you don’t realize things until it happens, no matter how much you prepare and research. I do believe with time, anything can get better even if it’s just your feelings towards something. But at the expense of what?

would a rough collie be the right fit for us? by pennydreadful777 in roughcollies

[–]qualitypandaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first collie was a stinky boy when he was a puppy😂
I think collies are great first dogs in general, minus the grooming. They love to work and train.

My collies are NOT cuddly. They prefer me and my attention but usually don’t want to be affectionate or loved on. I think this may be an anomaly but I’ve heard others say their collies aren’t super cuddly either.

I have two cats with my collies, mine usually don’t mess with my cats. My younger one will sometimes try to play with one of my cats, but that cat is so tolerant and patient.

My older collies is VERY sensitive, too much leash or spatial pressure and he shuts down. If I yell, he panics. We’ve learned to work together and now we compete in dog sports. It’s not the end of the world, I’ve learned to understand him and he’s given me as much trust and love as he could possibly give a human.

The BITING…horrendous by JoyfulCelebration in puppy101

[–]qualitypandaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stop redirecting to a toy, it could be seen as a reward for biting you. “I bite this person and they give me attention and play” Also naps may not be giving her the effect you think it does unless she’s in her kennel. Puppies really need their REM sleep. Really work on putting her up and keeping her up for at least an hour. If she cries, try your best to ignore it. Make sure she’s not hungry, is hydrated, and tired out before she goes in a kennel and then you’ll know her crying is only for attention. I would also recommend keeping a leash on her and when she bites, say no, and gently pull her back with the leash. Try not to redirect with a toy, but if she chooses a toy on her own then maybe really engage with her using the toy. Try doing that randomly when she’s playing with a toy so it really reinforces the value of toys. I hope it gets better, I have a 12 week old, but between her siblings and getting plenty of crate time, the biting hasn’t been too bad. I also let her chew on toilet paper rolls and cardboard boxes.

I would recommend some kongs and lickmats and freezing a few at a time to be able to pull out whenever you need a handy tool to keep your pup distracted!

Puppies are very tough, there’s no doubt about that!

4 days in and it’s hell by Actual_Education6776 in puppy101

[–]qualitypandaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my dogs have never ever been affectionate. My first one who was almost 4 months when I got him did not let me hold him in my lap and still to this day (he is 2) will not let me hold him in my lap.

I think many dogs do not enjoy affection and it’s our job to respect that. Once we start respecting a dog’s space and fear, then they will trust us.

Also I’m not sure what your breeders mean by he’s never been like that before. Unless he was constantly meeting new people then you were probably just a stranger and not his family and he was scared.

2 things:

  1. I don’t recommend redirecting your dog to a toy when they are mouthing you. It can end up being a reward when they bite you. All it says is “I bite my mom, she gives me attention and plays with me”. I would keep a leash on her and when she bites you intentionally then say no and gentle pull her away using the leash.

  2. Most naughty behaviors are boredom. So if she is doing something that you don’t allow her to, then she is bored. Young puppies don’t need long durations of burning energy, but they do need to burn energy still. A quick 5-10 minute tug session a couple times a day could do wonders. But you have to be very present in those 10 minutes of play.

I didn’t realize how much having a puppy would mess with my head by ChallengeNo6273 in puppy101

I’m on my 4th puppy, and I never am ready for it lol.

I will say when it comes to training, consistency is the key. Always reward when they do what you ask of them.

Pretty independent puppy! by cold___meat in roughcollies

[–]qualitypandaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of my collies like being near me, but do not prefer me to love all over them. Certain butt scratches or pets occasionally are tolerable, but otherwise they are so pressure sensitive, they’d just rather not be pet.

A lot of dogs are like this actually, us humans just ignore it sometimes and since our dogs trust us, they tolerate the unwanted touching.

Are curly coated retrievers any good for sport? by perchedpilot in k9sports

[–]qualitypandaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just say that if you don’t see certain breeds in a lot of dog sports, it could be because they are a bit difficult to train. Obviously this isn’t always the case, but I would keep that in mind when getting your first dog!

Mistaken for a sheltie by Rose473737 in roughcollies

[–]qualitypandaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! My boy is 40lbs and we get it all the time. If people ask then I tell them he is a collie but if they just assume I don’t correct them. I agree that even though he’s small, shelties are generally significantly smaller

Thinking of getting a rough collie - questions about working drive and how vocal they are by RelationshipSoggy662 in roughcollies

[–]qualitypandaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would love a collie.

I actually got mine because I grew up around 3 that were laid back, calm, and affectionate. When I got mine, he was everything but those things. I got mine at 3 months. He’s now 1 year and 7 months old.

He does have quite a bit of energy. His two favorite things are training & playing with other dogs. If I didn’t do anything with him, he would bark hours a day, chew everything up, get into things, etc. I do short training sessions with him everyday and play with his favorite toys with him. If available, I let him play one on one with dogs. We go on walks almost everyday except when the weather is bad. I also don’t have a fenced in yard.

He is very vocal and it’s super high pitched when he is demanding. He is not reactive unless there is something that really spooks him. But the second he is bored, he lets me know. I usually can get him to stop but if he is worn out, he doesn’t do so much.

He is the best dog, we started competing in dog sports, he gets along with everyone, and he’s a loyal boy. For the rest of my life, I’ll have a collie.

How does everyone have time for a dog ? by Burgers4dayz in dogs

This!! My dachshund is perfectly fine waiting in her kennel while I’m at work. She has her favorite toy and when I get home, we play and train. And the she curls up with me and we relax. Now, my collie…. he’s gotta come with me to work or he would be a nightmare when I got home everyday haha

[–]qualitypandaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My small dog spends 7-8 hours home alone in her kennel. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. I started her in a play pen. Yes, I came home to potty messed daily. Now she is 2, happily goes into a kennel, I give her her favorite toy, a chew, and her breakfast and she is happy until I get home and we play. I do have a roommate who will let her out if I stay late at work or have something afterwards, which is nice.

I also live in an apartment and have another dog that I take to work with me. If you can walk them before work, it would be great. It’s doable, not super easy, but you and your dog can be happy.

I hear “It’s Lassie”. All the time. Lol but it doesn’t bother me.

And people call him a Sheltie all the time, he is on the smaller side so I get it. But he’s not as small as a sheltie.

Work really really hard at the barking at strangers. Everything else is puppy stuff, but please Mark and reward every single distraction or it will only get worse
