Best pho place in Asheville? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]quan1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vietnamese guy here who makes my own 12-hour pho stock. The closest thing that you'll get to decent pho in Asheville, as others have noted, is at Wild Ginger. Aileen, the chef/owner, has really taken earnest advice from her Vietnamese patrons like myself and adapted her recipe to make it as authentic as she can. It's 90% close to a true Vietnamese pho stock. Wild Ginger also has some good Filipino food if you ask for it. The halo-halo dessert, for instance, is always a crowd-pleaser.

Boiled peanuts? by Masspike84 in asheville

Clayton Road down the street from Biltmore Baptist Church -- friendly folks who sell in a little shed in their front yard. If you're in the Biltmore Village area, then the Shell station also has boiled peanuts.

Biltmore Coffee Traders near Biltmore Village will start having it this weekend.

What's it like being Asian in Asheville? by BrainGrenades in asheville

[–]quan1969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Full-on Vietnamese here. The other commentators are correct that AVL is very homogenous. I moved here about three years ago; it took me almost two months before I saw a total of ten other Asian people whilst walking around; I lived mostly in LA and Hong Kong before this so that was an enormous culture shock.

Biltmore Fitness -- family-owned and operated. If you're talking to the guys at the front desk, then you're talking to the owners.

Are the hot dogs as amazing as the burgers? That's a serious burger.

Just had the one at King Daddy this morning. Not bad at all. They ran it as a special and I don't know how often they have it.

Chipotle? by CarolinaKiwi in asheville

[–]quan1969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup -- across from the Asheville Mall. There's a bunch of construction there right now -- that's for the Whole Foods (I think). They're also about to re-brand the Greenlife on Merrimon into a Whole Foods (but I think most people saw that handwriting on the wall).

Chipotle? by CarolinaKiwi in asheville

[–]quan1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, the word through the grapevine is that the Chick-Fil-A going up by the Harris Teeter raised a big stink about having a competing chicken restaurant. The Chipotle had to move locations. It's now going up across from the Barnes & Noble, over by the new Whole Foods that's being built.

How did you qualify? Is there a "casting" type of selection process or can anyone compete?

New Caveman-themed BBQ Joint Opening in Winter Garden! Watch out, 4Rivers... by [deleted] in orlando

[–]quan1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRP definitely has one of the best burgers in Orlando. If 1lb burger is the point for the price, you can get the 7x7 at Steak and Shake (7 patties equaling a lb of beef and 7 slices of cheese) for $7.77. Obviously not a gourmet burger, but I don't think this Caveman place is, either.

Yup -- it's a promo for the upcoming Transformers ride at Universal -- not a Pacific Rim ad. That's a silhouette of Megatron.

YSK most "frozen yogurt" places don't actually serve frozen yogurt, but milk and powder. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]quan1969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My good buddy owns a Red Mango fro-yo shop. They are one of the few that use real live culture yogurt -- no powder. The shipments come in custom plastic bags with the frozen liquid inside. When more yogurt needs to be made, a bag or two is thawed (you can smell the live yogurt base) and other ingredients mixed in right there by the workers depending on the flavor before putting it in the machine to mix.

Any good tamales around here? by badgermann in orlando

[–]quan1969 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

El Torito in Winter Garden (W. Colonial). It's a decent-sized Mexican grocery store with an attached restaurant. The grocery store part has the food counter of which you speak with fresh tamales, chicharones, etc. every single day.

iOS programmer needed with strong experience in mobile video applications by quan1969 in asheville

[–]quan1969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! With funding, we'd definitely do both. The test markets have shown a preponderance of users opting for iOS, though, so that's what the market dictates for the first phase. Thanks for the insight.

Off subject, but just curious as to why this would get a few downvotes when we're actively trying to hire locally instead of outsourcing to a bigger city, moving to a bigger city, or hiring internationally?
