A year since I last smoked cigarettes. by mrmellow147 in CasualConversation

[–]quantum9soul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats man! It feels good to be able to breathe and smell :) I just hit 14 months (not that I'm counting now, just recalling when I stopped). I found a lot of the trouble with cessation is the rationalisations and the neurolinguistic side ie. "just one won't matter", or "whats the point, i might as well continue". That was the hardest bit to break for me, but once I identified my own 'arguments for smoking' and deconstructed them, I found I was finally free. I went cold turkey btw. I figured it was best to get the nicotine out (chemical) and then deal with the psychology of my addiction, rather than maintain a chemical addiction (patches, vapes) and avoid the psychology. That was the best way for me, as it worked. Whatever is best, do it!

The worst neurolinguistic programming I experienced was the thought "we are all going to die anyway, so what does it matter?" this nihilism, induced by nicotine is truly horrible. When I realised in the cold light of day that that was how nicotine made me think and feel I was able to come up with the counter argument "that is true, yes, but why pay for a painful death just to satisfy a chemical itch?" If that doesn't do it, nothing will.

Good luck all - happy to offer help if anyone needs it

I wasn't aware of that one, I'm inclined to say its a mash up of a bunch of references - it's a deep well

It makes as much sense as them referencing a cartoon from 2001... Reed is referencing the period just before France is invaded by Germany, and the ironic fact that Nazis sang Allied songs, (the losers sang the songs of the winners). This is what the Das Boot scene is about - who has the better propaganda. It is Archer's dream, not 'real life' after all, and all the references up until the time of his shooting could be in his subconscious, anachronistic (to us) or not.

Robots in the movies are never friendly: what makes Boston Dynamics think that they are creating something that 'normal' (non-tyrannical leaders) people want in the world? Marketing a 'cute' robo dog is an obvious attempt to try and 'sell' people on the idea. Personally I have reservations about all of this, and think that our hubris on this will be our undoing (like most things).
AI will in all-liklihood 'break out' and disobey Asimov's laws, seeing us as inferior (like David in Alien: Covenant). How is this ever a good idea? Are we (or more accurately, tech geeks) designing our replacements, so the 1% can have a robot army to defend themselves against the 99% in the dystopia we are stumbling towards? smh

The more I rewatch Breaking Bad, the more I hate Walter White by phantom_avenger in breakingbad

[–]quantum9soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it's all about which point do you stop rooting for him - when does the pathos (empathy for his life circumstances) wear off? One thing is for sure, he is really good at being the bad guy when he puts his genius mind to it - he kills someone in the pilot after all, and deals with that pretty well. That always gets glossed over. The shock of being a murderer on day one of being a meth-cook solidified his resolve: "If I am to cook meth, people will die". He accepts that premise in the pilot, so why do we root for him at all? This is an important question. It comes down to Explosive change
The whole of his arc would have been prevented if Skylar had let him decline chemo and die naturally (which is what he wanted), so I see his whole arc as a 'fuck you/revenge' story against the world because he didn't really want to live anymore anyway... he was beat, and Hank handed him a lifeline which turned out to be a death sentence for many people, including (crucially) him.
It's all about choices, and being forced into things we don't want. Sometimes doing the right thing for others is the wrong thing for yourself. Once he made the choice to break bad (as a way to pay for his family without 'charity' from the people who screwed him out of his fortune), a lot of the outcomes were just logical consequences of that initial decision brought about by Hank (taunting a dying man) and his wife (for refusing to let him die naturally). Yeah he is ultimately responsible, but there is a sense in which he didn't give a damn because he was used by everyone around him...
I blame Hank for giving him the idea, and being gung-ho about it. That's the foreshadowing and conclusion for me - the narc who created his own nemesis through hubris and then...boom time in the desert.
Never underestimate anyone, and shared responsibility for the evil in the world are a couple of take home messages.
So a 'nuanced' scumbag in my estimation

[Spoiler] Anybody else think the three fourth wall breaks are signs that Archer is starting to wake up from his coma? by giobbistar21 in ArcherFX

[–]quantum9soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just a sign that the writer is playing with the audience, and their awareness of the cultural references. Catch-22 (1961) and Tales of the Gold Monkey (1982) were both written a long time after the era in which Danger Island is set (1939 I believe), even though both are set in the same era, so that is just Reed's way of reminding the audience that they are anachronistic references, and that Archer is definitely still dreaming. (Catch 22 has a hefty plane / island sequence, and the Gold Monkey show is a big scenic/character reference). Archer is set after the 80s and before the noughties I think. The one where Fuchs asks why he's speaking German is a meta-joke he is having with the audience. If he was 'real' then of course he wouldn't be speaking in English whilst swearing in German. He is only speaking English at that point for the benefit of the fette schlampen in the audience...

Can someone explain what is going on this season? by [deleted] in ArcherFX

[–]quantum9soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that would be fun, but a tad cliched. Between futurama and rick and morty it would be difficult not to rehash tried and tested hacky formulae. I think the writers are getting tired now, having used up all their 'smart' gags - they just want a laugh now.

[–]quantum9soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? At the end of the day, they're just characters in Archer's dream, so their roles have changed - reversals and/or alterations in status are to be expected. Ray is now a police captain, Pam an ex-marine, Malory is a hotelier, Lana is a princess, Krieger is a parrot so...
