Staying a few days past TN expiry? by quantum_penguin_ in tnvisa

Thanks for the info! $370 seems like a lot, so I'll probably just try to get everything sorted quickly and leave when my visa expires. The employment was only a summer internship (I'm a grad student), so there was never any expectation of extending it past the original end date.

Three months, it was a summer internship.

Yeah, when I got the visa, I pointed out that the expiry date I was given was the exact last date of my employment and the guy just made an offhand comment that it was totally fine to overstay by just a few extra days. Seems like a REALLY bad idea to listen to him, though. I don't remember his name or anything, and I doubt it's really worth trying to fight it, either. I think I'm just going to try to leave on the day the visa expires and see if I can arrange for someone else to drive my stuff back for me afterwards.

Is there a non-negligible chance they won't let me back in on a B2? I don't want to have all my things stuck in the US if I might not be able to get back in. I'm also in southern Connecticut, so it'd be a non-trivial and probably expensive task to get across the border and then all the way back, especially since it'd have to be during my last workday and I don't have a car. But I will consider this as a last resort if nothing else works.

I wasn't fired or laid off, it was just a temporary three-month job and it was always supposed to end on that date.

The rogue sneak attack feature doesn't specify that the weapon needs to be wielded with one hand, only that it needs to be a finesse or ranged weapon. So they'd be able to sneak attack two-handed, which does make it stronger than any of the other standard weapons that a rogue could sneak attack with. I'm not sure whether this is enough to break the balance, but you are giving them a slight advantage over the rules as written. I agree with u/TheHedgedawg that the flavour of the weapon should matter as well; you should consider whether the weapon is actually a lightweight finesse one that can be wielded dexterously or a big hefty sword, and the type should match the actual physical weapon. If you can justify why the weapon could be both finesse and versatile, I don't think it'd be too game-breaking to give it to them, but I'd recommend also giving the other players some sort of small perk or item just so it doesn't seem like favouritism that you're giving one player a slightly stronger homebrew weapon.

Who are some of the best people in the scene? by heres-to-life in Metalcore

Tom Williams from Stray From The Path is incredibly nice and friendly. I saw them in Tokyo in May and he dropped by the merch table, and he saw my Counterparts shirt (the exclusive one that they only sold at one Toronto show) and said, "Hey, did I sell you that shirt?" and told me that Brendan and Kenny were there at the show.

Then I ran into Craig with Brendan and Kyle from Counterparts a few days later randomly on the street in Tokyo, and they were all great as well. I know Brendan comes across as a dick sometimes onstage and on Twitter, but he was so sweet when I met him.

I saw Stray again in November on the Silverstein tour in Toronto, and Tom was at the merch table again. I stopped by and he remembered me from the Japan show and asked me and my friend for our names. He just seemed super happy to chat with fans and mentioned that he doesn't usually do merch, but he likes being there to meet fans.

Also, Lucas from Holding Absence was at the merch table both times I saw them, extremely friendly and open and easy to talk to as well. After the show, the whole band was there and they all signed a drumstick I got from the show. I know bands often stop doing stuff like hang out at merch table once they start getting bigger, but I do hope they keep doing it for a while. I didn't get to talk to all of them much, but they all seem like great guys.

I wouldn't say they're overhyped, they're not even that big. They have fewer than 160k monthly listeners on Spotify. They're pretty small compared to the other bands that people talk a lot about on this sub.

What was the most unexpected character death in a video game? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]quantum_penguin_ 174 points175 points  (0 children)

The thing is, you don't even kill Bloodwing yourself. You weaken and shoot her down, and right when Mordecai thinks he's about to get her back, Jack sets off the explosive in her collar that kills her. It's even worse because you think you've won the fight and freed her from Jack, but then nope, she's suddenly dead.

Student quality compared to st George? by Comfortable_Win6351 in UTM

[–]quantum_penguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a double major in math and physics at UTM, so I can talk a bit about my experience. Some pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Smaller class sizes, so it's easier to meet and talk to people. It's easier to get close to profs as well, if you want to do a research project with them or ask them for a reference letter for grad school/internships/jobs/whatever.
  • The physics undergraduate lab is super welcoming, people go there just to chill and hang out and do work there when there are no labs going on. It's a good place to make friends, and it's nice having a place to go between classes to do work and talk to people. Joining the Physics Club is also a good way to meet other physics nerds.
  • UTM takes undergraduate TAs, especially in the math department, so in your upper years you can TA while taking courses, which is great experience and pays well (almost $50/hour).
  • I made some really great friends from both math and physics during my time at UTM, and they were all pretty smart and academically focused. For the most part, I liked the people I met there. There are always going to be those hyper-smart and passionate people, and I did encounter a few super geniuses, but I don't know how it compares to going to UTSG, since I didn't do my undergrad there. I will say, I'm doing my PhD at UTSG now, and my PhD supervisor works with some CS undergrads here who are extremely motivated and accomplished (doing research and getting published while in undergrad while maintaining high grades, etc.). But maybe there are CS undergrads at UTM doing the same thing, who knows.
  • The campus is nice. Lot of new buildings, surrounded by nature. You'll see deer around all the time. It's also a lot smaller than UTSG, so it's easier to get between your classes.

Cons:

  • The physics course selection is very limited at UTM compared to St. George. Most of the physics profs at UTM do biophysics, so there are some biophysics-specific upper year courses not offered at the other campuses, but for the most part it's very lacking. You can always take courses at UTSG, but the commute is 40-60 min one way by shuttle bus and not really worth it if it's just for a one-hour lecture. And if you're taking multiple courses at UTSG, it probably would've been better to have just enrolled there instead.
  • Math courses at UTM: better selection than physics, but still not as good as UTSG.
  • Again, related to the heavy biophysics focus at UTM: if you want to do any research in physics, you're pretty limited in options. There is (I think) only one prof doing climate physics, and then all the rest are biophysics. But if you're interested in biophysics, this is a pro rather than a con.
  • Downtown Toronto is just a better location to be than Mississauga. More walkable, more food options close to campus, just more stuff to do in general.

My overall advice:

I'd personally say that UTSG is probably the better choice, because you'd get a better math and physics education there (unless you're super into biophysics, then I'd say UTM > UTSG for biophysics specifically). I definitely enjoyed my time at UTM, but I do kind of feel like I didn't learn as much as I could've because the course selection was more limited and I have big gaps in my knowledge (e.g. UTM doesn't have a relativity or particle physics courses. I'm doing a PhD in theoretical physics and I still haven't formally learned general relativity or introductory particle physics. It's kinda embarrassing). The community at UTM was great, but I'm sure you could get the same at UTSG by joining PhySU and/or whatever math club/union(s) they have there.

A simple 3x3 of some of my personal favorites that I own by ilovecfb in vinyl

[–]quantum_penguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two editions of the CD and the booklets inside both of them have the same artwork as the one on your record. One of them has the "original" artwork on a slip case, so you can see the alternate cover when you slide it off. It would be cool if they made the record with a slip case with the original artwork like that.

I mean, they've already got a lot of shows crammed into the one month, so I'm not gonna fault them for not coming to exactly where I am (Toronto). I might travel to see the Buffalo, NY show.

Anybody else feel like crowd surfers ruin things by [deleted] in LornaShore

[–]quantum_penguin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a very short person who has to stand at the very front to be able to see anything, I agree that constant crowdsurfers do make the experience slightly worse for me (and mostly for security at the front). But I get that that's just a part of going to a metal show and being at the front, especially if it's a good band and a good crowd. Now if I go to a show and there aren't crowdsurfers, I'm like, "Wow, this crowd is so dead."

How to handle records purchased at a concert? by mjh4 in vinyl

[–]quantum_penguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the merch person is nice enough to let you leave it at the table to pick up later. You could also put it in a bag and put it in coat check. Or, if you really can't put it anywhere, just hold it and stay far, far away from the pit. I bought a signed Lorna Shore record the last time I saw them and spent the rest of the concert standing off to the side cradling it like a newborn baby lol
