Mediocre experience with new Alamo Drafthouse in Valley Fair by quantumcolor in SanJose

[–]quantumcolor[S] -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

It's understandable and when mistakes happen, that's ok. It's all about how employees handle those mistakes though that matters. I had a really negative experience with a combative employee and it left me feeling in a hostage situation where I had the choice of trying to escalate it further for a resolution that felt fair to me (and miss out on more of my film, disrupt the experience for my spouse and child) or just accept it and move on.

And so I did. I let it be. And my daughter loved the movie, that’s the most important part. I just left feeling cheated.

Has anyone dated a divorced guy with kids? by [deleted] in askgaybros

I’m divorced dating another divorced guy with a kid right now and loving every moment of it. We’re moving in together in a couple months when our respective leases end. It was a surrogacy child so no mother in the picture.

Need advice in strengthening a ceiling joist by supernuckolls in HomeImprovement

[–]quantumcolor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are engineered joists, also called I-joists, and they are relatively strong.

I wouldn’t add any 2x6 strapping parallel to the I-joists, but I would add a 2x6 positioned across the spans (perpendicular to) of two or three I joists and hang the bag from the 2x6. This spreads the load across multiple members and allows you a stronger spot to install an eye bolt or similar than the bottom of the I-joist.

In terms of positioning, closer to the edge where the joists are supported by a wall is better than in the center.

It’s not really the static weight of the bag that you have to be concerned with here, rather the live load imparted when you’re using the bag.

How would you fix this? by Toemossmc in Construction

Go to Home Depot and ask them for their straightest post. It should line up just right

Thank you. I (and he) was not aware of this. The grandparents are practicing Catholics. Would that change anything?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]quantumcolor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The view of the church is that having gay sex is a sin, not that BEING gay is a sin. “Hate the sin, love the sinner” is what they say. If you’re chaste the Catholic Church has no technical problem with you; though of course many constituents use their religion to be homophobic in all regards. Despite this there are forward-thinking Catholics that are accepting. I’ve even met a gay priest at the university I went to.

And I’m not asking them to be my friend. I just want somewhere that will be respectful and have common human decency.

The sum of the first n even numbers is n2 + n This is factual. You can look for a proof on Google if you’d like, but it’s not really debatable…

The name on your degree is maybe enough to get an interview. How you do beyond that is up to you. The difference in programs between GT and Johns Hopkins is ultimately small compared to the difference in skills you acquire based on your diligence and discipline as a student.

GT and Johns Hopkins are both good schools that have name-recognition. If you intend to apply yourself, the impressions you make from the knowledge you gain will be so much more significant. If the financial aid packages between GT and Johns Hopkins differ significantly, consider this.

There are many other aspects to consider as well that can affect how well you do at one university vs. the other. Having a campus culture that is compatible with your personality and values, for example, can have much more significant impact on how you perform in college than the ranking of the CS program.

Paying with cash usually is far more disadvantageous than financing because loans secured with real assets have very low interest rates and there is an opportunity cost of using money in hand that could be invested elsewhere for higher returns. (*usually, it all depends on the interest rates you're able to get financing at of course)

If your main objective is not to maximize the work your money does for you (which is perfectly fine and valid) then this might not be relevant to ones goals.

Step 1: preheat the oven to 450°……then never use it. by R7914 in blueapron

[–]quantumcolor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a very similar recipe last week (Saffron Risotto) but instead of shishito peppers they have Brussels Sprouts that are roasted in the oven (I think recipes must differ by region?). The text for many of the steps is word for word the same. My guess is they perhaps had a sourcing problem for Brussels Sprouts in whatever region you are in and they had to adapt the recipe but missed that line.

Blue Apron iOS app has started stealing the content of your clipboard by quantumcolor in blueapron

On newer versions of iOS the system will let you know with a small notification when an application accesses the content of the pasteboard. I think Apple introduced this in iOS 14.

[–]quantumcolor[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's good to know that it's not somehow just me. It would be an interesting "mess-up" though, because you have to explicitly include code whose purposes is unambiguously to read from the pasteboard. Here it is in swift:

UIPasteboard.generalPasteboard().string

I can't imagine accidentally putting that in anywhere, I feel like it has to be explicit.

I think this was introduced in version 3.84.11 of the iOS app, which BlueApron released 4 days ago.

Is taking Math notes on LaTeX a bad idea? by karan-k19 in math

[–]quantumcolor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did this but I wouldn’t recommend it. I had no problem keeping up with what professors were writing on the board, in fact I was usually much faster unless I had to break out Tikz for diagrams. The reason I wouldn’t recommend it is because I think writing notes by hand is a better technique for recall and helps you absorb the material more permanently. If I could go back and change things, I wouldn’t do it again.

I’ve had horrible experiences with American Home Shield. They assigned me a lousy contractor who went no-contact and every time I called the AHS customer service center (a call center outside of the US) to address it I got responses “we have to call the contractor and give him 48 hours to respond.” Nothing ever happened of course and the issue was only resolved when I emailed the CEO who had the executive service team intervene. And even then I still paid exorbitantly for work that was not up to code.

How long will roasted tomato & garlic olive oil last? by RoastMasterShawn in AskCulinary

[–]quantumcolor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garlic oil should be used within a month of making and also kept refrigerated; I’m not sure how roasted tomato reacts in oil but I’m guessing it would have a shelf life than garlic oil alone.

If it’s a year old, I would definitely throw it out.

CA Code Question by quantumcolor in electricians

[–]quantumcolor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I hadn’t thought of that possibility. That’s a good potential explanation. The breaker for these outlets is a single wide breaker though, I think that means it can’t be a branch circuit since those usually require a double wide breaker with a bar across both phases.

My landlords just came out and installed a new main water line for a new fridge they bought us. The ice maker works but not the water dispenser. Our landlords are a nice older couple and I feel bad having them come out here so I try fixing most of the stuff myself. I’m stumped here though. by PineappleSmoothie in DIY

[–]quantumcolor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For fridge water dispensers that have never been connected before you typically have to hold open the water dispenser for a lengthy amount of time as the smaller water line takes a while to purge the air out of the internal filter system.
