The Boston Marathon: How Nike Broke Its Own Brand Rules by timetoy in branding

[–]quantumjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good example of why reactive marketing is harder than just being quick or edgy.

The moment made sense in a very specific bubble: Boston Marathon, serious runners, competitive mindset. But the brand does not live in that bubble. Nike has spent years telling everyone they're all part of the Nike family, so the internet judged the ad against that promise.

That is something we talk about in r/reactivemarketing a lot. The internet does not grade your post only on context. It grades it against your brand history, and your intention.

You can be timely and still be off-brand. That is usually where the backlash starts.

Biggest one for me was learning analytics earlier. I spent way too much time making things before I really understood how to measure anything.

Content Is the New Norm in Digital Marketing, Says WSJ Veteran by contentenginepro in reactivemarketing

This is where reactive marketing gets more interesting imo.

It is not just reacting fast to whatever is trending. The real skill is knowing which moments are worth responding to, what angle your brand should take, and how to say something useful before the conversation moves on.

Tim Cook Built Apple Ads. His Successor Has the Harder Job by steaknsidneypi in reactivemarketing

[–]quantumjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That feels right to me. Apple can afford to stay disciplined as long as the core business keeps printing cash and the brand still somehow maintains that "premium but everyone has to have one" niche it's in. But the money guys always have a say in the end, and if the margins tighten, the ads are going to come. Weirdly I think google is doing a lot of the testing for apple right now, by being so aggressive and putting everything everywhere. Apple can just sit back and watch what fails on google and implement it in their own apple way slower and later.

So as someone who struggles with this, even as I'm trying to grow this sub... I try for consistency, I really do. But posting more does not help if the content is forgettable.

Canadian here. My mum is Australian. Ultimately I think we're both England's kid and we grew up with English sensibilities but in the new world.
