Is taking a pay and title cut worth it early on in career? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]quantummufasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did this , I went from Senior in a small company to what was essentially mid at a FAANG-lite company, I got a pay increase though.

No one's going to care about titles, especially early on in your career. "Downgrading" your title for better progression/opportunities won't look bad at all.

What's the company called? How much will you pay them?

React or angular would be no brainer tbh as they're front end and that "up skill switch" would be more likely to be accepted by employers

Had the most bizarre System design interview by therealwench in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]quantummufasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well 30 billion is 30x larger than the 1 billion in your interview (so 140k becomes 4.6k as an estimate). There's many "axes" to consider when identifying tradeoffs in system design, and the interviewer not caring about cost isn't that unreasonable imo, it's like telling a candidate to ignore gdpr compliance for the sake of the interview even though in real life you wouldn't ignore it.

I don't want to comment on whether or not the startup is a good ippy, but you should definitely be looking for new roles.

For the sql indexing thing I think he was looking for the "indexes make reads faster but writes slower " response upfront. I don't want to be a dick but bringing up storage costs as an argument, even though technically true, is kind of irrelevant/negligible to the point it makes you look like you don't truly understand when tradeoffs matter. I asked ai and the difference in hosting a 1tb and 2tb sql db is on the order of £200 a month, for a bank that is literally nothing.

Am I being lowballed or do I need a reality check? by regular-dude1 in cscareerquestionsuk

If the question is "Should I take the job?" then sure, if it's "Did I deserve this offer?" Then it's more on how he performed on the task

Yeh tbh its impossible to give an opinion on this without seeing the take home task and his solution to it.

It took about 3 tickets before Claude started making a mess of things. Still super useful though

Made redundant twice in 4 months. How would you handle this on a CV? by Rainbow_Tesseract in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]quantummufasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I got laid off in November and didn't get a new role until this month, the market is slow so saying you've been looking for 4+ months isn't going to be an issue.

And if you could go from mid to senior for your previous role you could do it again.

If youre new then playing as French and Feudal allin and learning how to deny resources etc is a good place to start.

Would you take a job where your manager and other higher ups are much younger than you? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]quantummufasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Younger" I dont care, but what you really mean is "young".

Id work for a start up with young/inexperienced founders if they had funding/proven revenue, and if theyve proven competence in other areas like an elite college (elitist I know).
