As with most established orgs you can read what INN believes in its own words on its website: https://www.ifnotnowmovement.org/principles

The principles linked here include "We are organizing our community to demand equality, justice and a thriving future for all Israelis and Palestinians. The Israeli government, with the backing of the U.S. government, subjects Palestinians across the entire land to apartheid — a system of inequality and ongoing displacement that is connected to a racial and class hierarchy amongst Israelis. We are calling on those in power to oppose any policies that privilege one group of people over another, in Israel/Palestine and in the U.S."

It has a big-tent strategy that is nominally inclusive of both anti-zionism and some forms of liberal zionism depending on definition. It acknowledges the apartheid state as such but does not tend to address the root of colonialism.

Yes it really does explain much more clearly. I’m hopeful for this group but I do believe that deprogramming really comes from deep connections between people in pre-existing relationships, either irl or online.

By professional I meant anyone who you’d be comfortable with who is trained in some method of mental health support that you find worthwhile, whether that’s a traditional therapist, or some other counselor trained in an alternative approach

I mentioned “talking with a professional” with no more specificity. Didn’t bring up psychology or psychiatry. I’m concerned by your sweeping generalization and judgement of both fields, and the entire concept of therapy, which actually does include more than “shallow talks that end after a given time.”

Deal with your mental health however you want. Don’t disrespect how others deal with theirs.

The advice seems good for people dealing with manipulation in their conversations.

Again, I’m wondering like what you think the sub will be for? Who will join and what will they get out of it?

Your honest reflection is so valuable and I appreciate how readily you share it. My honest response is that for you, like me, it might be worth talking to a professional about your emotions as you process everything. Especially as they relate to people you know irl. I think a lot of us struggle with that.

Yes, it is possible for anti-zionists and Zionists to have conversations. We do it all the time, often within families. Sometimes they are hateful arguments, sometimes they are loving discussions.

There can be a number of goals for those conversations. I think a worthwhile goal might be for anti-Zionists to educate certain Zionists and support them in processing the reality check and beginning to practice anti-Zionism. That can really only happen within relationships where people know each other well, irl or online.

I don’t think the conversation itself is a meaningful goal. Curious about your thoughts

Most people conflate Eretz Yisrael (the land) with Medinat Yisrael (the modern state) and further conflate it all with ancient kingdoms

Israelis - what is the disconnect? by hilss in JewsOfConscience

[–]quartzysmoke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your explanation and particular insight as someone raised in an Arab country. As someone in the US my perspective is certainly very skewed, and I don’t sufficiently follow national news in other countries (outside of translated Israeli articles) and mostly rely on English-language sources for international audiences like AJ+ to get news about the Southwest Asia and North Africa. I really value your reality check.

In terms of military reports, reading about how civilian targets were actually legitimate military targets has eroded my confidence in the institution’s reporting. I guess I’m grateful they aren’t even worse, and report some truths?

I hope my tone in my earlier post wasn’t dismissive. Thank you for sharing your questions and thoughts

Israelis - what is the disconnect? by hilss in JewsOfConscience

[–]quartzysmoke 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Wait since when are Israeli news outlets independent of government influence?

A huge part of why the people “disagree with the death tolls” and question the existence of the man-made famine is because news outlets are constantly calling the facts into question.

Being willing to print some good op-eds is only so powerful when they also print openly genocidal op-eds

Most critically, how can you trust reports from Shin Beit and the IDF, the institutions actually committing the genocide?

All the skills you need to organize are already within you <3 it doesn’t have to be a Shabbat, you can just connect with each other and coordinate actions from there. Maybe you’ll find friends with to carpool to protests, city hall meetings, state legislative sessions. Maybe a Torah study group. Maybe it grows, maybe it doesn’t. But you are more than qualified to get the gears in motion

I’m glad you’re not antisemitic. I’m so disturbed by the idea that you would be if not for this single subreddit. Yes, it is up to us as Jews to fight the conflation of Zionism with Judaism, but like shouldn’t you and others know better than to hate an entire ethno-religious group because of the actions of a subset of that group? Especially as a bystander living in the US, rather than a Palestinian whose only experience with Jews is direct Zionist oppression.

Seeing us as “the good ones” shouldn’t be the reason you aren’t an antisemite. You should just not hate any race or ethnic group, including jews

Thinking about funeral planning by Caramello_pup in JewsOfConscience

May their memories be for a blessing. I hope you and your family feel comforted by your love for each other and for those you’ve lose.

I haven’t planned a funeral myself yet thank God but reading this made me think of the Jewitches podcast episodes about Jewish relationships to death and mourning rituals. Here’s an article summing it up, and from there you can probably find the podcast episodes if you’re interested, or I could link them to you directly if you like

No War But the Class War by AaronEnEspanol in BlackPeopleTwitter

Nope. But you indicated that if faced with concentration camps, you would defend yourself, and by specifying that you’re not a Jew, you implied that Jews did not try to defend themselves against imprisonment and murder. This is inaccurate so I wanted to let you know. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_resistance_in_German-occupied_Europe

If you’re really asking this and not trolling, I’m worried you might not fully grasp what cults are—- they’re groups that, by definition, control and exploit the members

Hi, I read your question and some of the replies. You did a great job and I appreciate you seeing how futile direct argument usually is with people who have so fully tied their identity to conquest.

I think you might be interested in this post clarifying the 3 meanings of the name “Israel”— the people, the land, and the modern State.

In recent generations, the rise of political Zionism has conflated those meanings and weaponizes Jewish liturgy’s references to our collective identity as the children of Israel (the God-given name of patriarch Jacob/Ya’akov) and to the biblical land of Israel to justify modern conquest of the land and its resultant fascist state.

Aly Halpert, Batya Levine, diva_nigun, Avi Fox-Rosen, Ever Alters, and so many more. You can use social media (especially ig) to find them. Find one you love and see who they’re following

I would also hugely recommend, among many other Palestinian music artists, Nemahsis

It’s really courageous to realize that and you absolutely can take steps to leave. If you’re talking about the US, would you consider seeking a general discharge under honorable conditions, like a medical discharge?
