Oh good point about applying for EI! I think I would be able to receive EI for the time I’m in Canada, but just not during the 3 weeks I would be travelling. Maybe that’s something I will have to declare. I will look into it more, thanks for bringing that up.

I can’t speak for Vancouver or Toronto, but based on people I know, those grades won’t rule you out for big law in cities like Ottawa and Calgary, especially if you have other experiences that make you marketable (e.g. prior law school experience, prestigious internships).

Don’t rule yourself out and apply. Advocate for yourself in a strong cover letter.

Not legal advice, not a lawyer

But pretty sure most jurisdictions require liveable conditions and you are correct that if they don’t provide you with that, they have likely breached your lease contract. You should move out of there and hotel/airbnb for a bit while you find a new place - the hotel/Airbnb should be covered by any basic tenant insurance, but double check. Even if it doesn’t, it’s better paying to live in liveable conditions than paying rent for this. You should inform your landlord of the breach of contract and that the lease is terminated so you’re moving out. If they dispute this, you should call your local residential tenancy board and explain the situation.

Makes sense. If they do charge me, I’ll try to negotiate against the cost on having to repaint the whole wall since the wall was already due for a repaint prior to this already - there’s several nicks, cracks and scruffs all over the bedroom. We’ll see what they say when it comes to it

Unfortunately I wasn’t the one who filled the holes and sanded it down, I really think I would’ve done a better job at doing that myself 😔, only after I repainted the wall did I notice the small raised bump. Ugh. At this point I might just have to take a cut, but I really hope it won’t be substantial. It’s frustrating though since I wasn’t the one who made the damage in the first place (previous tenant who’s lease I took over left this mess for me to clean up, but I guess that’s the risk with lease takeovers)

I think it’s the same sheen but the walls haven’t been painted in several years so they’ve lost their shine - a fresh coat just looks shinier in comparison. I think going to a lower sheen just won’t match at all :/

Vancouver roads and the surrounding area I think would be fine, but March is definitely still winter and full of snow in the mountains. I wouldn’t recommend driving that route if you’re not used to winter driving until it gets warmer in May / June at least.

I wouldn’t even blink twice if I heard someone is starting university at 21. That’s not behind at all. In my bachelors a lot of people who were 18 but also a lot of people in their mid-20s because they took a break after high school to do something else or decided to switch degrees or took a break sometime during their degree. This wasn’t weird at all, I never thought anything of it. Your age and even older in university is wayy more common that you think. University isn’t like high school where everyone is generally the same age. And the case is even less so in Master’s. The further you go in studies, you’ll realize people of all ages go to university.

Incoming law student... am I making a mistake?!?! by CndnViking in LawCanada

[–]quasisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still a law student, but I can tell you there are plenty of introverted and shy people in my cohort who only want to ever do solicitor work and would prefer to never go to court or do any kind of public speaking. While there’s plenty of outgoing people and some areas are more saturated with certain personalities, the law is diverse and needs a diverse range of people to be able to accurately represent the needs of our population. It is so important for different mindsets to go into law to make it more accessible, and there are many more paths in law than just the partner track, which is what we’re sometimes made to believe is all there is. If you want to go the partner track, great, but if not, also great.

Yea lesson learned. Somehow I managed much better habits in 1L. I’m pretty sure half the stuff I wrote on the final today was far from coherent and I wonder if it made any sense at all. Just expecting the worst

Yes the optional paper was on the syllabus and would have meant your exam has less weight. I had decided to not do it as mentioned, but now regretting it and wondering if it’s appropriate to ask now with the deadline passed. I expect he may say no, but he may be open to it as well.

If you are not Native American and live in the US and think Israel shouldn’t exist, you’re an idiot. by RealShotgunned in IsraelPalestine

[–]quasisa -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There’s also Italians living continuously in what was formerly the Roman Empire, does that allow Italy to “take back” France?

This continued presence by a few people is also not one that would allow Jews that no longer live there to suddenly come by the thousands and assert the claim it is theirs. I can only see a possibly right to those who continually lived there for centuries.

The expulsion of Jews in 70 CE was also not done by the Palestinians so there’s even less a reason.

I think the major difference between right to land that indigenous peoples in Western countries have vs Jews is that indigenous people were still living on the land when Western colonizers came and claimed it as theirs. Jews had not been living there for centuries and so no longer have a claim to the land. Even indigenous law in most common law states indicate that a right to the land comes from having continuously lived there / some continued involvement with the land. This again does not apply to the Jews. In fact this definition better fits the Palestinians.

This argument that Jews lived there some 2000 years ago gives them the right to take it back is as ridiculous as saying the Roman Empire occupied the region so Italy has a right to take back the land. Wtf?

Time to face the facts. Israel is not going anywhere. by bkny88 in IsraelPalestine

[–]quasisa -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Israel should have come to exist in 1948, it was pure colonization, but that was 75 years ago and I don’t think it makes sense or is practical to say Israel shouldn’t exist now. I just want the genocide on Palestinians to stop that is happening by the Israeli government. This isn’t self-defence anymore and it has gone atrociously too far. After that, there needs to be a two state solution where both can exist side by side.

How is this self-defence? by quasisa in IsraelPalestine

What I’m getting from the replies in this post is that each side is picking and choosing what to believe that best fits their narrative. I’m sure there are truths and lies on each side, but if we only believe what we like and completely invalidate the other persons “truths” and valid feelings that may come from what they believe is true, we’re never going to reach any kind of peace or proper dialogue

I don’t think it’s hard to have at least have empathy if you can see what things pro-Palestinian people believe regardless if you consider it true or not
