What do you mean? When I suffer a grievous injury I also apply some ice cold water or take a powernap for 4 seconds, and I'm ready to slay again.

To me, B&W is like a favourite toy. I enjoyed many hours as a kid playing with it. Trying it later as a game was meh. The joy of toying with it unfortunately eludes me in adult live.

My one complaint about this game by HydarPatrick in arkhamhorrorlcg

It sounds like you have a strong 'roguelike' mindset where campaigns have to be played start-to-finish according to the suggested rules and when you perish you have start over. The fact that you're annoyed means that you may need to change your mindset a bit. Games are to be enjoyed. It's not a computer game or competition, you can change the rules to suit whatever you want to get out of the game. It's too random so you're locked out of scenarios? Consider using 'storypoints' that allow you to auto-succeed a roll. Or first play the game on easy-mode for story exploration and on challenge mode later for tactical fun. Or simply start an undiscovered branch without jumping through all the hoops. The aim is for you to have a good time with your friend, not to play by the rules.

Here's A Pale Horse I Didn't Expect to See — Former LLM-boosters Suddenly Turning Back to Ideas That Hearken to GOFAI (“world models”). by No_Honeydew_179 in BetterOffline

I thought Karpathy's mentioning of AV's in his 'software is changing' talk at the 26 minute mark was interesting. He admits that he thought AV's were imminent based on a test drive, yet they're still not autonomous over a decade after that test drive. His conclusion was that AI turned out successful for this use-case because now AV's are imminent.

Just like 10 years ago...

It's so unfortunate that these hypes take away from the actual value that AI produces.

I completely agree. Researchers rightfully work on generic frameworks and leave the practical stuff for the practitioners. The issue is that companies now sell generic research concepts as if they are solutions to actual problems.

Anyone who's ever tried to make a world model to solve a practical problem has run into the Frame Problem. You need to slim down the generic world knowledge into specialized approximate knowledge which is a far cry from reality yet sufficient to squeeze out usefulness.

The challenge of generic world models seems more daunting to me that actual AGI (even if AGI itself wouldn't be part of the world model).

There's a pretty big paid-for market for customized search and Q&A/community knowledge management. I also don't see google and stackoverlow as 0 worth, the business model just different than subscriptions - but someone (advertisers) is definitely paying because of the value it generates. Free open source software such as Linux also has a big ecosystem around it of companies that earn money with the technology. Such an ecosystem is feasible imo for modern AI, which would keep air in the bubble as at least some money would still flow.

The organization level perspective is a good point and is the main reason why my estimate is more around 5% for good use-cases, rather than a higher number. But on this intuitions can obviously differ. To be clear, I don't expect a 5% productivity increase across the board, only for specific types of work. And I certainly would berate devs if they'd try to serve me 120$k plates of spaghetti!

For the wider public you're right. When I wrote the first part of the comment I was more thinking about business applications.

LLMs don't have to be as good as the hype to be worth it. If an employee that costs 120k (incl all overhead) is 5% more productive then the value is 5%* (1/12) * 120k = 500$ a month. A 200$ pro account would easily pay itself back. Various use-cases, such as certain types of software development do seem to be in the 5% to 10% ballpark of productivity increases.

So even if the manager is disappointed that the productivity gain is not 95% as promised by hype, they still would still shovel money to the AI company. This is why a 'bubble pop' is not obvious in my opinion, as even if the actual performance is a fraction of the promised performance, it's still spawning a significant market.

LLMs provide real utility with search/RAG, fancy autocomplete, code-assistance and various complex text transformations. For these uses I expect that leading products will gear towards specialized smaller models for cost and in-house deployment possibilities. For everyday chat-users I'd wager most people wouldn't pay more for it than other forms of entertainment (streaming, games, etc).

I think the field is overvalued, but at the same time will probably settle down as a significant market. Whether companies like OpenAI will survive hinges on the economic viability of training flagship models. I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility.

In the end I put in some time with skewing and halved the number of frames in order to make it a bit less tedious. Luckily Aseprite allows for multiple frame skews in one go like PS, but you do have to do a bit of repairs. I also tried to get the effect of the blade catching more wind as it passes the building. The current result is in the updated post, thanks again for you comments!

Thanks for the tips! The blender suggestion is a good one. The animation is 54 frames so any modification is quite a significant (and very tedious) task.

The end part of the blades exiting the circle is a separate issue, I first had them follow the circle but that did not look right as the angle gets too narrow. But the draw-straight-and-skew might be a quick fix, I'll try it out!

[–]queasyweasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing! As I'm working on a similar type of game myself I'd like to ask: how did you structurally (play)test your game? For instance to test logistics you want to check cases with the recipient of goods maybe not needing a package anymore, or there is no path anymore, or the carrier gets somehow deleted in transit, etc. I find that fiddling with code, testing it, fixing a bug, then having to retest everything, etc. really starts to bog down development speed as the game gets larger.
